it’s never too late to begin or continue strength training. I’m a 71 year old former powerlifter and continue to train with resistance exercises. They needn’t be complicated or unduly put stress on joints but it will sure help your overall fitness.

thanks for the great comments. To answer a couple questions No, I don’t eat back the calories. Eating enough is a challenge. Since May 25 I have lost about 30lbs with a realistic program of clean balanced eating and both cycling and resistance exercise. Water consumption is 10-16 glasses a day plus 2 21 ounce bottles of…

gave up the power meter a couple years ago. Now I just go ride and watch my heart rate zones

thanks.

excellent advice about the e-bike. Don’t get a moped type thing with a throttle but as you suggest a pedal assist is a great option.

thanks all. I do resistance training 4 times a week and this beat up old body still cycles 100 miles a week or so. Thanks for the encouragement..now to make sure I eat enough

I had a rowing machine and the only exercise I ever received was moving it. Gym membership a much better deal but the best deal of all is free...go for a walk

Smoked turkey or chicken breast, hummus, vegetable tray (cost more but already cut up), garden wraps and fruit. Yogurt, granola and vanilla wafers.

It’s a huge problem. We deliver “snack packs” to families with kids that have asked for help. Not one of these families has ever said “thanks” but instead has requested specific free foods. Soda and other snack food on EBT...no. When all else fails one could actually join the workforce.

Try cycling. You’ll burn calories like crazy and “gain” that muscle mass you are seeking.

It’s amazing and no added sugar. Stores really well so the next day it can be easily warmed in microwave

First, never eat those instant oatmeal packets. Loads of sugar. Here is what I do and everyone in the family, even the dedicated oatmeal haters love it. In a slow cooker, set on low, before I go to bed: 6 cups water 2 cups steel cut oats. 2 apples, peeled and cored, diced into 1/2” size pieces 1/2 cup dried cranberries…

Cycling for both myself and my wife is just awesome. We’ve lost over 125lbs combined, been on some amazing cycling vacations and met great folks. I’m 63, my wife 44 and she kicks my butt every time. The great thing is that we do it together.

Cool. Good luck and continued steady success.

Take that scale and throw it away, or at least take the batteries out. Weight is a poor measure of fitness, especially when beginning. You will gain muscle, especially if you’ve not exercised in awhile. Measure your success by your clothes and how you feel.
