  • I noticed the last couple days that I have English daisies and violets blooming in the lawn. How nice! The hyacinth are pushing big greens up, and I can see flower buds. The slugs are enjoying them.... My camellias are still a few weeks off. I'm also probably just a couple weeks away from starting to trim small branches…
  • @scottydewwannalosewt Evidence that drinking tea "boosts metabolism" is dubious. Using caffeine can make us be more active and therefore burn more calories, and green tea contains caffeine. Honey is sugar, and it will raise blood sugar when eaten.
  • Heaviest weight: 175.4 in early 2013. Original MFP starting weight (January 2018): 168.2 December 31, 2024 Weight: 158.0 (10-day average 157.2) December 28 (Starting Weight for this challenge): 158.6 (10-day average 157.3) January goal: Get back to lower end of maintenance weight range (153 pounds) Ultimate goal: Stay in…
  • Sweetgum is a native where you live. People plant them here as ornamentals. They have gorgeous fall color. They tend to hold their leaves until the week after leaf collection ends in late December or early January. They do shed messy and spiky balls. I have known people to injure themselves turning ankles on them. Dogwood…
  • Gumballs? Do you mean fruit? Ginkgoes are dioecious. That means that male and female flowers grow on different individuals. Only the females make fruit. Because the fruit can be kind of smelly, most of the ones you buy at the nursery are males and are grown from cuttings. There are some females on campus, so I picked up…
  • We're having unseasonable weather. Mostly that means it's not raining. Since we're having clear skies without an inverted atmosphere, we get mild sunny afternoons. Since it's been a few days, the grass actually dries out. It also means COLD nights, at least for what we're used to. I'm way behind on fruit tree pruning, so…

  • If 100 calories per hour is approximately twice as many as it takes to sit quietly, I can totally see bowling being twice as active as sitting. There are several movements: * Stand up. * Pick up a standard weight. * Walk to a set area holding the standard weight with two hands * Transfer weight to one hand and swing the…
  • I was at the store today and was trying to decide what cheese to bring home. I was trying to choose between manchego and Brie with wild mushrooms. I put the manchego in my cart, but then I put it back. I didn't have any immediate plans for it, and I didn't want it to tempt me. I feel OK about it. I did get some avocados.…
  • Bowling is allegedly a 3.8 MET activity. That is about the same burn as "walking with a daypack on level ground in a city" which is 3.8 MET. A MET is a metabolic equivalent where 1.0 MET is about what you burn while sitting quietly. For a 150 pound person, an hour of bowling burns about 260 calories. So I reckon yeah -…
  • You weren't locked out of the group. There was a bug in the software so if you tried to navigate here from your alerts, it gave an error. I got that too. You could go through the category list and get to this thread, but that was the only way. I reported it a few weeks ago. It was pretty much limited to this thread. It…
  • @brigitte Feel free to switch what day you weigh. If you end up with two dates one week to catch up, don't stress.
  • I agree that pre-logging is a GREAT tool to remind us not to go off the rails. I also agree that it's wise to give yourself permission to change what you planned, ideally without affecting the results. I don't think I could pre-log a whole week. That said, I have been considering doing some more advance meal planning. I…
  • That's fantastic! Now you have a plan. I don't think I could do it. I'm fickle with what I eat from day to day, and my caloric requirements vary depending on my activity. Would you consider putting a plan in place on what you will do if you want to go off plan? Maybe take a few minutes on Wednesday to see if you want to…
  • @anxietyfairy I love that you are breaking up your goals into much smaller goals so you can observe repeated success. I think it's fantastic that you've decided NOT to "reward" yourself with food. Very wise! That said, if you have some time you might look in on some research on wearing Crocs all the time. I have a pair,…
  • You don't need a food handler license to sell succulents like you do for lemonade.... One of the adults in the house has a hobby making metal flowers; I'm not sure where he sells them. As fart as your description? Sounds like my town. Not "Plant Momma," but Plant Posse. Note: that link points to a business, but I am not…

  • I also have a plant "problem." I like to propagate them. The goal is to have at least two of each but also to keep giving them away. Lately I've been doing a bunch of propagation of some Rex Begonia. I think the variety is "escargot." It has a really neat spiral on top of each leaf, and the growth form is more compact that…
  • Are those prickly pear cactus? They are very cold tolerant. There's a professor in my city, I think he may be retired now, that has fallen deep into the cactus hobby. Most of his cactuses (or cacti if you prefer, and that might be right because it's multiple species not just multiple individuals) are NOT cold tolerant, and…
  • @LisMA0202 May I suggest you take a tiny step back and look at your progress in total rather than just the last week's data? From what I can see, you dropped over six pounds in just about two weeks. Your average daily loss is 0.4 pounds. That is a lot. Keep sticking to it! You will almost without a doubt have weeks that…

  • I did some pruning yesterday because the sun was out, my green waste cart was empty, and it will get emptied today. I noticed one of my rose bushes has two buds that are trying to open. Yikes!
  • Thank you for sharing this @takinitalloff It's easy to get frustrated and go off the rails. The trick is to see when it starts to happen and make changes sooner rather than later. Practice practice practice. Sometimes you'll still fail to get it right, but it's really just a temporary situation. STICK TO IT!
  • Would you consider taking a deeper look into this goal? Three pounds a week is generally considered too fast. Slow and steady wins the race. Even if you have a LOT to lose, even two pounds a week is a very fast rate. This image comes from the "Most Helpful Posts" discussion on the "Getting Started" category. Poke around on…
  • Odometers USED to run backwards in reverse. That was decades ago. My 1977 Celica ran the odometer forward if you went in reverse, but the old 1969 Dart went backwards. It also had reverse threads on the lug nuts on the driver side. Bonus trivia: if you change tire size for some reason, you can affect the speedometer AND…

  • The yeast thing is a family story/joke about a time we wanted to make something that needed yeast. There were six inches of snow on the ground in Atlanta. We lived at the bottom of a quarter-mile hill. Not going anywhere. We called the quickie mart (Mumfords if that rings a bell) and asked if they had yeast. Nope. We…
  • Go stock up on milk, bread, toilet paper, and dried yeast.
  • @AnnPT77 Being a former IT professional, I'm sure you already tried powering down your Garmin and turning it back on. If not, give it a try. I had some issues with mine about a year ago that drove me batty. I can't believe it took me so long to try power cycling it. It worked just fine after that and still does. I'm…
