  • When I was 5 years old I walked 2 miles to school everyday and then 2 miles home.. I enjoyed it! Maybe it’s time to start a habit? My parents taught me about traffic on these walks and important lessons like stopping and looking both ways for cars..make it a game, look for new and exciting routes, create an adventure.
  • Welcome to our little support group, you aren’t alone lol 😂! Thanks for the suggestions everyone!! A friend of mine happened to have a $20 off coupon for a pair of shorts similar to my old ones but in my favorite color! I hope they are just as awesome 😁, this time I’m buying TWO!
  • No I wasn’t thirsty, but something felt “wrong”. Since I live in FL dehydration is always a fear, despite it being freezing out I thought maybe I was just dehydrated and I could jug a lot and make me feel better. In hindsight that was probably a really stupid idea, hypnatremia didn’t even occur to me at the time. My brain…
  • Ooh those all sound so cool!!!!
  • I used Gu but at some point I stopped taking them during the run because I couldn’t keep them down. That makes sense, I just got bloodwork done before the race and my salt was low. It’s crazy because I put so much salt on my food! Thanks for the recommendation.
  • I had my first gu at mile 6 and tried taking one every hour, I was chugging water and took every water station offered which was every mile or two miles. Towards the end I started grabbing two cups. I felt well hydrated before the race and days before I started drinking extra to make sure. That makes sense, I didn’t take a…
  • I’ve ran this distance before and I hike a lot and I’ve never experienced swelling before.. this was something very new for me. Good to hear others have this issue though!
  • Pretty much none, that’s a really good point. I was used to running in mostly 90+ F weather with high humidity and the race it was in the 40’s-50’s I think and rain. I probably should have had a completely different fuel plan.
  • Hey there fellow runner!
  • Uh huh that was me lol. I followed a Hal Higdons marathon plan, thought I was a hot shot because I was a competitive swimmer on an Olympic team for 12 years... pushed harder than I should have, sprinted runs I shouldn’t have, didn’t listen to good advice and ended up sidelined with a knee injury right before the race.…
  • What no way!!!!! Small world 😁! Aww thank you and great job to you too! It looked like it was a beautiful course, I wish i could have seen it not flooded lol. Bet it would have been even more amazing. The volunteers were just so awesome, I was so impressed those kids stuck around in the rain and cold for so many hours.
  • That’s a good point, I’m not so sure the neutral shoe was a wise choice for me. I had my gait analyzed at a running store but they watched for about two seconds, I’m sure as I get tired I’m heel striking but it doesn’t seem to happen until mile 18-20. So if you’re a heel striker you need a forefoot striking shoe? For about…
  • Seriously I’d tell someone who never ran it before that it’s like a combination of getting hit by a bus and beat up lol, I guess I’m a runner now? You’re right, I just put a fresh new training plan on my fridge this morning oops, that happened fast. 🙄😂
  • I’m really sorry for your loss... and I can relate. After my last dog passed I didn’t get outside much and put on some weight. I didn’t wait long to adopt my next dog because I missed walking with a partner, and to me a home just isn’t the same without a dog. If you aren’t ready yet, you could always volunteer to walk a…
  • Sore as heck lol, but now it feels like the normal kind of sore. The bad knee seems to be trouble still but everything else improved a lot. It’s kind of eye opening for me, maybe it’s because of my set backs or maybe not but the marathon distance was definitely a lot more taxing on my body. The half marathon was a tough…
  • I’ve heard of it, I actually found a brace that works well though. I damaged my knee right before the race and wouldn’t have made it through without that thing. Everything I read about KT tape they said you have to know how to apply it right, so I was hesitant to go down that route. I have chondromalicia (runners knee) so…
  • Found out it was a compressed wash cloth towel lol.
  • We put it in water, it’s a wash cloth!!!! LOL! Thanks guys for the help you were right! 😂
  • That’s what we originally thought too, but don’t want to mess it up if it gets wet and it’s not supposed to lol. Also seems easy to break apart. 🤔 A towel would totally make sense though, it rained the entire race.
  • So it’s easily torn it seems and shredded, so I don’t think it’s a towel even though it feels and looks like a towel. It came in plastic, the advent health thing is just a slip of paper that came on top and was wrapped with plastic.
  • Yea the big round thing in the second photo, it’s about the size of my palm, very light weight, not styrofoam it kinda feels like a towel material but when I bent it it cracked and fell apart a little. It came wrapped with that advent health thing on top in plastic that seemed like it was meant to be opened. It doesn’t…
  • Pina colada, I added shredded coconut after I blended. And blended in fresh pineapple!
  • What’s a reasonable price for a sports massage?
  • That’s a good idea, I’ve never had one before. I’ll have to look into that thanks 😊
  • My first marathon! Cold, and rained the entire time, but it was amazing. I saw two guys juggling balls the entire way, a couple got married during the race (I only saw a lot of bridesmaids and one groomsman), so much kindness from the racers and the volunteers... it was an experience of a lifetime. Race goodies included…
  • I was wondering if that was the case with me as well, I wear a neutral shoe. Thanks for the fantastic advice everyone! I’m really sore this morning in both knees, much worse than yesterday! I guess the adrenaline and excitement from the race finally wore off lol!
  • I’ve followed this thread for a while now, just wanted to say your progress is inspiring! Especially for an “older person” (I assume you are from your username), just goes to show you can be active as you age! 8.46 miles is no small feat at any age.
  • Thank you 😊, goodluck!!!! It truly is a memory you will always keep with you, so hard but soo worth it. I got a foam roller today from my brother 😁!
  • Yeah I don’t know about that, perhaps that is just your perception or a stereotype. I’m a “millennial” and I grew up going to dances with kids my age, I sewed A LOT and still do, and I’ve been playing a musical instrument my entire life. Also involved in sports. For dates my husband and I often go ice skating, roller…
  • Make sure your shoes are fitted properly and aren’t too old. My husband gets them every time he starts running.. he even started slowly with the C25k program. I asked the folks at our local running store and they also recommended compression socks... but didn’t have much advice beyond that 🙁. My theory is too much too…
