I definitely agree with the deficit. What helps me is doing a different activity. For example I chose from Zumba, bike riding or jogging.

@Lulehu that's including having 2-300 calories taken off for exercise. Still not much food however. My limit currently is 1900.. I'll make a couple of changes to my diet and will see how that goes. I cut out bread so that probably makes a difference... It's just hard because before all I ate was crap so now I'm eating healthy foods I am not really that hungry but I know I'll suffer if I don't meet my target

Although I have the opposite build to you I had done it for a number of years. In my experience rugby players are usually helpful and aren't judgy with how you look, they're probably more concerned with how you play but as a newcomer you should be supported if the club is any good. Good luck!
