  • Someone mentioned the NOVA food classifications. I was curious, and found this: https://archive.wphna.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/WN-2016-7-1-3-28-38-Monteiro-Cannon-Levy-et-al-NOVA.pdf
  • Foam rolling was recommended by the P.T. who I saw for a *bad* IT band injury. My right band can get super-tight but I have a high pain tolerance, hence I really screwed it up by continuing to hike through the pain. Foam rolling was encouraged to "break" up the tension. :shrugs: It worked, along with the other floor…
  • Hannah, if you do decide to update your calories, just go to your MFP Home > Goals > Daily Nutrition Goals > Calories. That's what I did because MFP's generated calories were just too low for me.
  • Hi Hannah, you might like to get another reference point. Here's a very popular calculator for Basal Metabolic Rate: https://tdeecalculator.net/ MFP gave me 1200 per day, when I wanted to lose 20 lbs. But the TDEE told me 1341 calories (for those rare days I don't *do* any exercise). I felt better eating 1341; I'm usually…
  • Hmm. You might ask the instructor if they have advice for food you could eat in advance that would rest easy on your stomach but also help fuel you.
  • Lemurcat2 Yes -- there have been studies that show when stamp recipients can get "bonuses" for using SNAP at farmers' markets, they purchase fruits/veggies at a significantly higher rate.
  • What if you got something fun and sweet, like cherry tomatoes or strawberries for the munchie moods? 7 tomatoes is only like 15 calories, and they are sweet and easy to eat. Most berries are also low calorie.
  • I'm not sure of my high school weight. It just never occurred to me that I should be weighing myself; I was young and active. I am pretty sure I typically wore dress size 8 then, and I wear that or a 6 now -- but with vanity sizing always changing, who the hell knows? I believe my weight is pretty similar to my college…
  • What do you eat right before your workout (within half an hour of starting exercise)? Before I run, I eat an ounce of lox, and drink a glass of V8 to get protein / sodium / carbs. I find this helps me have sufficient energy for my exercise; I also have high arches so the sodium intake helps me not get cramps in my feet.
  • Hi OP, you mentioned you are in grad school & stressed. I work at a big university (with grad students, actually) and when I go to the gym, I see some students with Kindles or listening to their phones while on the elliptical bikes / stairmaster / etc. - you can probably record your professors (although many classes are…
  • Hi there, you're really not doing bad at all. I got back into running earlier this year, and I think I was starting out around 13 minutes per mile too (at a lighter weight, although my terrain is pretty hilly). If you want a goal, these articles below might help you figure out what is "average." It seems like you've…
  • Only on the weekends - I wouldn't like weighing myself in the morning before I go to work (and I'm usually in a rush anyway). Once or twice a week seems to be fine to see overall trends. I log my food daily so that keeps me accountable.
  • I wish I didn't loathe mushrooms, especially as you can forage a lot of good ones around here. I try them every now and then, but ugh. I do like most fruits & veggies quite a lot, though. I'm hoping the (imported) Japanese green tea I drink will be enough; green tea is a "superfood" with some actual data backing up its…
  • I'm not sure if our Seattle soda tax has been a success yet... it raised over $10 million during the first half of 2018, and the money is earmarked for research and public health initiatives, particularly in lower income areas. I don't think people are unhappy with the Seattle Council for enacting the law, though (see the…
  • Great posts, I've enjoyed reading this a lot. Living in the PNW (transplant from the Deep South) has been really motivating to me (37 yo) that you *CAN* age gracefully & with strength. Seeing all the old goats out on the trail inspires me, compared to the "after 50 it's all downhill" model I witnessed in my birth state.
  • That dark chocolate is life. The dark is so much more satiating than milk.
  • As Mike and Motorsheen said, being able to accommodate customers from a restaurant's perspective makes economic and moral sense; restaurants are also considered part of the hospitality business, and making someone feel bad isn't part of that. Large people know they are fat. Not having a chair for them isn't going to fix…
  • Haha, they might have insisted on sampling it for dangerous items. Hate to see their reactions when they found the plastic baby Jesus!! (Child smuggling?!)
  • King cake, fedexed from New Orleans to Seattle. Very hard to not eat more than a bit.... i brought one of the cakes to work so my coworkers could help, lol.
  • As kimny72 said, individual satiety is key. I started avoiding carbs for breakfast (like HeretoLose) because it spiked my blood sugar up too high and really made me hungry. I eat bacon and eggs instead, and then for a midmorning snack, I have veggies like carrots and tomatoes instead of the Cutie mandarins. However, I do…
  • Anita, I wonder if you would like trying out Japanese bento boxes for portion control for your meals on the go (school, work, etc.)? As others have already stated, meal prep is a big key to winning. Because you are vegan, I also wonder if some of the bento recipes (with focus on grains, proteins like tofu, and root…
  • Do you like dark, rich chocolate? I have to have some sweet every day, or I feel "cheated" and resentful of my diet. But I find that high-quality chocolate is satiating, more so than the cheaper stuff (sorry Hersey's), and if you get 70% cacao, you start to get health benefits too. Here in Seattle, I often buy Theo's…
  • You are looking fab and strong! Are you measuring your waistline? If you need a number you can feel good about, you should track the measurements.
  • https://nomnompaleo.com/post/125878339293/my-top-paleo-pressure-cookerinstant-pot-recipes Almost every recipe I've tried is a winner. I especially like the Asian inspired ones. Also, the directions are easy to follow and she has photos / videos.
