  • I went climbing. It was good fun, I was in pretty good form. I lasted just over 2 hours, and left when the gym threw me out. The handful of us left then all started chatting. Amazingly, I was the youngest (at 50)- the others all seemed to be 52 or 53.
  • I went caving. I learned how to Single Rope Technique (SRT) - you have ascenders and descenders attached to you, to let you go up, down or along bits of string. It was really good fun; I bought my own kit as I hope to do it again, maybe next weekend. It was in the North Yorkshire Dales, which is one of my favourite places.…
  • 2 hours climbing yesterday. It was good, my new shoes are getting more comfortable. (I wasn't hobbling at the end). I got a couple of new routes. I repeated a load of harder routes. My standard fell off a lot towards the end, I guess I got pumped.
  • On Saturday, I went climbing for 2 and half hours. I was out of form. I had new shoes, and I may have downsized too aggressively, although I'm sure I will break them in soon. I felt tired afterwards, but found the energy to do a couple of walks, ending he day on 15 miles. I went for a hike on Sunday. It was nice, I ended…
  • I went climbing yesterday. It started off really badly; I fell off everything. Then suddenly (and unexpectedly), I improved and I sent nearly everything. In retrospect, maybe I should have warmed up for more than 5 minutes. I went into the office, which is only my second time in since lockdown. I had to rely on public…
  • My logging has been weak. I've been pretty active, though. Today was a 15 mile walk, followed by deadlifts. I got 130 kgs (which is 2*bodyweight) for 2 sets of 5. Hook grip for the win.
  • I visited my mum last weekend, so self isolated beforehand and didn't go to a climbing gym. I squatted on Friday, getting 3 sets of 7, 80 kgs in. Over the weekend, I did a light spot of walking. There was a bit of a charging disaster with my car getting home (the first two chargers I tried failed, so I ended up needing a…
  • I lifted yesterday, doing:* Jump rope warm up * Hangboarding * Bench, 65 kgs, 3 sets of 5. This is the heaviest I've managed since my diet three years ago. It is my body weight, so not particularly good, but I was still happy with it. * Deadlift, 110 kgs, 2 sets of 6.
  • I believe Fitbit does some calculation as to what your heart rate should be to count, which comes to around 100 per minute for me. If I'm walking alone, I may well be over that as I tend to go quite quickly; but quite a lot of walking recently has been with friends which tends to be slower. This tends not to count. I don't…
  • Fitbit claimed 490 for me. It's not a metric I ever pay much attention to. I believe the 150 minutes is the WHO recommendation, although it doesn't seem particularly ambitious to me.
  • I got a dive in. We only managed one, as there was a lot of kit faff. My buddy had a free-flow we couldn't immediately correct. Fortunately, it happened straight away and I had a spare second stage in my car. So we swapped over, and then we were good to go. It was a half hour dive, shallow (8 metres max), 6 degree Celsius…
  • I went climbing. It was a relatively short session, at 90 minutes. I was with my little brother, who is a bit out of practice. It was good; I got some new routes. I also got more than 12 miles' walk in.
  • I went climbing for 2 and a quarter hours. I left when the gym threw me out. I was in reasonable form, and got a couple of new routes. There was one route I'd done before I failed on, but this was right at the end and I was quite pumped by then. There is some similarity to my workouts as well. However, I have definitely…
  • My cheese anecdote: Many years ago I was on a diving trip. We were nipping across the Channel to dive in Normandy. (The D-Day landings make for some of the most historically important wrecks one could hope to dive.) I lent a friend a tank. He wanted to pay me; I didn't want money. He insisted; eventually the idea of being…
  • Sunday I originally intended to have a rest day, although I did a walk so got 22,000 steps. Monday Climbing, 2 hours. This was a very good session, my best for a while. I got a load of new routes in the v3-v4 range, and repeated ones I got recently. My current favourite is a terrifying slab that takes me around 2 minutes,…
  • On Friday, I lifted. I did: 3 sets of 5, squat, 80 kgs. 2 sets of 5, OHP, 35 kgs. 1 single, OHP, 40 kgs. I was going for reps, but I'm weak. I hangboarded a little between sets. Yesterday, I climbed, for a little over 2 hours. It was very fun, I got a load of new routes.
  • I was pretty sedentary yesterday as I needed to go my scuba club EGM in the evening. I did a lot of walking to get there, so got around 17,000 steps. I have been on a minor cut this year - my weight drifted up to 147 pounds. I aimed to cut to 142; I have consistently been below that for a few days, so my diet is officially…
  • After 5 hours cardio, I would personally take the view that I could eat pretty much anything and still be in a deficit. Well done, that is a mammoth session.
  • My logging has been weak, although I've been active. I went caving this weekend. There were two incidents of note. On Saturday, one lad had a bit too much to drink. Apparently, he vomited on his bunk, went out of the fire exit and fell to earth from the first floor. (He was fine.) I was tired, so I slept through it all.…
  • I am seeing my mum this weekend, so I'm avoiding climbing gyms until then as a minor precaution. I've taken to doing a pre-breakfast walk (or run if I do it alone), so I've average 20,000 steps so far this week. I lifted in my shed last night, doing: Bench, 3 sets of 7, 55kgs. Deadlift, 2 sets of 5, 120 kgs. (I'm 65 kgs,…
  • And I picked it up yesterday. As a middle ager, I am slightly baffled by some of the new fangled technology, but it is easy enough to get moving (and it is scarily fast).
  • Thursday 2 hours' climbing. It was not a bad session, I got two harder (for me) new routes. Friday Lifting and hangboarding. It was a light session. I did 3 sets of 6, squat, 75 kgs; and 3 sets of 6, OHP, 35kgs.. Saturday Climbing, 90 minutes. Another good session. I went to City Bouldering. I got most of the v3s, flashing…
  • Interesting. I meditate daily, although in a slightly eccentric way. I do deep breathing exercises, which culminate in seeing how long I can hold my breath on an exhale under a cold shower. It's hard to time, but I think I'm at around 2 minutes now. The cold shower is noticeably more bracing in winter. I haven't been doing…
  • It has been a while since I logged. Here are the last few days: Thursday I had a climbing session. It was over 2 hours, very good fun as I was in good form. I sent a lot of stuff. Friday Not much exercise, as I drove to Wales. I did get over 10k steps, though. I left mine at 9.30 pm, and got to Wales at half past midnight.…
  • Climbing on Thursday was OK, but I still wasn't brilliant. It was a 100 minute session. Friday was a medium sized walk, getting 10 miles in. I also did some squats (3 sets of 6 at 80 kgs). Saturday was climbing. It was a a 90 minute session. I mis-read a grade in my warm-up, and session flashed something which I realised I…
  • Thanks Anne! The lady in question is Sue, who led the expedition. She and her husband took up caving as their retirement project. They are both way fitter than me, so give me something to aim at. I went climbing yesterday. It was my second gym session after my month off. I was better than at the first session, but still…
  • I got 100 minutes climbing two days ago. It was my first time at a climbing gym for about a month; I self isolated for a bit over Christmas, to avoid giving Covid to my mum. As expected, I was out of form, but it was good fun and I did get a couple of harder routes. I will go again tonight. Yesterday, I did a 6 mile walk…
  • Some pics from my caving expedition: The middle one is the start of the squeeze. It is relatively high at that point; later on one needs to lie flat with arms in front and slither like a snake. Yesterday was active recover, getting 16,000 steps in. I will climb later today.
  • I spent the weekend caving in Wales. It was good fun. There was a lot of climbing, and a 80m squeeze which felt longer. A bit of the squeeze was along a small stream. The trick, if you feel stuck, seems to be to exhale and relax, then you can slither a bit further. I was good at the climbing bits. (A couple of people…
  • Yesterday, I did an hour's yoga; a morning walk; an hour's climb on my home wall; and finally an evening walk. The climbing was good. I think I kept my HR between 120 and 140 for 70 minutes, so I did work. (The home wall is more like strength training than cardio, so I am happy with this.) My crimp strength was good; my…
