I can see both sides to this. Weirdly it came up as a topic on askamanager.com a couple of weeks ago. On the one hand I think it can help the problem of overestimating exercise calories burned. I was once in an informational talk by a dietician student at university who stated that it would require walking a football field…

As I said I’m not an expert, but I looked it up and the 10 principles sound pretty close to what the common advice is here. https://www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/ Of course the application can be where things start to split, but people skew calorie counting all the time here, I guess my stance…

I’m kind of confused about saying the two aren’t compatible. I’m not an expert on either, but feel like I practice both. For the most part I eat to my calorie goal, but there are days that I’m just not hungry...I don’t force myself to eat until I make my minimum. Then there are days where I am ravenous I eat until I’m…

Eggs are my go to soft food...open debate on how that affects cholesterol, so you’ll need to figure out which camp you and your husband land on that issue. Quich, frittata, or just plain ol’ Scrambled. A lot of fish is on the soft side...especially canned tuna. If you’re worried about carb overload, maybe try some of the…

To be fair it doesn’t look like the pants have a logo 😅

Silly question but have they tried Amazon? Their essential line has a lot of basic sportswear. I bought what I thought was going to be a cheap sweatshirt to wear after rowing and it was really good quality. No logo and very plain. At the end of the day I’m not sure I’d let a logo put me off a functional clothing item that…

I’m probably one of those annoying people...because if I’m asked if I lost weight...how’d I do it...what’s my secret I generally answer with something like “yeah, you know that stupid advice about moving more and eating eating less...turns out they were right”. I usually get a laugh. On a more serious note, I follow a…

I use the nutrition page in the app for this. It’s along the bottom near center slightly to the right . I’ll change the date to yesterday’s date so my current unfinished day doesn’t skew the average. It definitely helps to keep higher calorie days (Thanksgiving I’m looking at you) in perspective Ignore the two low…

Hah...was just pondering that same question a USA Today article said the average T-day dinner is ~3000 calories. That seemed low to me. I just logged 5000 and am calling it done. I will try to be mindful of my portions but I’m not getting that worked up about it.

I’ve been known to stop in to my local sushi place for a takeout container of matcha green tea ice cream. 😀

To be fair, you’ll likely not get get a bunch of answers here saying “I was miserable and felt worse at a healthy weight” I can give you my perspective...and I don’t know or really care if the results are from lost weight or increased activity/exercise. Yes I feel better. I’ve lost 30-ish pounds*. Less headaches and back…

Thanks all. Yes it’s up to him to figure this out. But it did get me to thinking, which is why I asked. More of a question that got me thinking vs a problem that needs solved. I feel for him because while he is very fit and active he does seem to have the build and shape of your average offensive lineman. He’s one of those…

I probably should have mentioned that I’ve been using MFP successfully now for about 3 months, so am comfortable with the concepts and overall success strategies. The specific question comes from a calorie goal that could very easily vary by 1000 calories depending on his work schedule. So I’m not sure that average would…

Can you not do both? Follow the WW/SW model, but at the same time log your calories into MFP. It seems to me that you’d get the best of both worlds. I’ve not done either program, but from what I know it gives you the framework of the foods to eat, and MFP will give you the sanity check and the future maintenance tools.

Body building competitors are in a whole different category than the rest of us mortals. I mean I don’t typically shave every hair on my body and paint myself in tan on top of a crazy restrictive diet + gaming my hydration levels. I watched a coworker train for a competition and she was mentally and physically exhausted by…

On the weekends when I try for longer rows, I’ll often have a couple of ounces of beef jerky...I like the Kirkland steak jerky. During the week I don’t eat anything and the have breakfast about an hour later.

I think for me the fast thing wasn’t so much of an issue, because when I started exercising loss wasn’t a goal. I really just wanted more activity. I started losing as a result of the activity but it still wasn’t an active goal. About 3 months ago I added calorie tracking to my routine and that’s when I started to think…

I have about 10 to go to get me to my first goal. Then I’ll reevaluate and decide what I want to do from there. I’ll either continue for another 15 purposely or go into a maintenance cycle and treat any additional loss as gravy.

I need breakfast in the morning and don’t have the time to cook. (If I’m super motivated i’ll Bring a bagel, egg, and cheese to the office and cook a breakfast sandwich there) Panara and Chick-fil-A to the rescue. It works for me, I’m on the 1200 base + exercise calories so I have about 1400-1500 a day. It works for me to…

Hmm. I haven’t figured out a tangible reward yet...mostly I let myself really enjoy all the small victories. I think I focus more on my fitness goals...I bought a small pin after finishing the C2 dog days challenge. That was hard! I posted a copy of my 1m meters rowed certificate to Facebook on the day I got it. And on…

It could be a honeymoon phase or it could be the new you... I kind of thought the same thing, but I’m 3 months in and 10lbs down and still going. I started this as an experiment, that way if it didn’t ‘take’ then it wasn’t me it was the ‘experiment ‘ being over. I’ve had a few weeks where things didn’t go to plan (last…

You are all missing the obvious thing to hand out on Halloween...clearly you should be handing out rocks. Not only did Charlie Brown not end up with a boatload of extra calories, but he got a good workout carrying around a bag of heavy stones. Start collecting now for next year. (I may or may not have been trying to figure…

Good luck! Fortunately I haven’t had to battle this one...but I know it can be hard.

I just fit them in to my plan. Or I buy it and that does the trick without eating it...I’ve had a pint of Ben and Jerry’s in the freezer at work still sealed for two months. Sometimes taking away the forbiddenness is the thing that gets it off my mind. I do have weird cravings and not very often (sauerkraut/Rueben…

I’ve been nibbling on the little heath bars and gummy life savers. Surprisingly reasonable in calories. All candy left over will either go to work with or my husband. Our ToT was this past weekend and it was pouring buckets...every kid got a handful.

Amen...I’m now well and truly screwed since I’v been losing. My pants are all big on me so I’ve had to start buying new ones, and it’s such a crap shoot. I was a tight 10, now I seem to be anywhere from a 6 to an 8...I have not lost 4 sizes worth of fat. Luckily I had some old clothes boxed up and I can more than…

Legs, face, bunchyness under my arms, gut, arms, back I still have a lot to lose in my arms and gut, but it’s coming. Honestly it was my arms and back that was the tipping point for me to start exercising...I saw a picture of me from the back and it wasn’t pretty. So that’s where I wanted to lose first.

If it helps...5’4 currently 159 44yo. I chose the 1lb per week sedentary (office job + being a self proclaimed slug) and my base calories are 1200. I exercise daily and burn ~200 calories. I’ve been averaging ~1400/1500 calories consumed per week. I’ve lost 7 lbs since the end of July at a nice steady rate. I think your…

Agree with the others that spot reduction isn’t a thing... that being said exercises that focus on your core and upper back can’t hurt (but don’t expect miracles...I’ve been rowing every day for a year and still have back rolls and flabby arms...less than before but still there)

I chose 145 as my goal to start. It was a weight I vaguely remember being ok within my mid to late 20s. I started exercising when I was north of 180 (at 5’4” female mid 40s). I didn’t weigh myself at the beginning because I was more interested in moving than losing. At 167 I started calorie tracking and am down about 7 1/2…
