The dumbbell pullover is probably my favorite exercise of all time, it is still debated as to what is the main muscle group that is involved in this exercise. I always thought it was chest, but some people say it's mainly a lat exercise.

Gym class in the 60s, needless to say it doesn't look like this today : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fISgKl8dB3M

Interesting, so as long as the arching is not too excessive it's not really that problematic. I have a slight arch, I wouldn't say it's excessive but when I tried decline push ups I compensated a lot more than on regular push ups. Still I could do 15-20 reps on decline push ups, but with a arched back. I'll try it with…

I'll go for 3 x 2 mins for now we'll see how quickly I can get there. I'm not progressing very quickly.

Yes I started doing planks a couple of weeks ago, i'm doing 3 sets of 1min and after a minute I start shaking and it becomes really hard. I do them on leg day and I notice that it's not just hard for my abs but for the entire body. I don't know what are the strength standards for planks, is 3x1min ok? And yes I record…

Yeah at this point I should do fewer reps and do them slowly, it's not that simple of an exercise. I always did bench press or dips for chest which doesn't really require full body activation. I should also do chest flies but I have a hard time really feeling my chest muscles with this exercise. And 30lbs is a little bit…

I'm on mobile right now and can't link anything but there's a Wikipedia page on interracial marriage in the US, you can look at the academic research. It says for example that white men/black women couples are less likely to divorce than white/white couples, which is surprising. It depends on gender and which racial group.…

I'm the product of an interracial relationship and it didn't last long, my parents seperated when I was just 3 years old. This is very common, out of all the people the mixed race people I know none have parents who are still together. Most of the time the father just abandonned them. You can look at the stats online,…

If golf is a sport then so is bowling and curling right? They are skill-based activities. In my opinion competitive dance and cheerleading is much closer to what we consider sports than golf. If they would call themselves "athletes", I don't think anyone would object. As far as bodybuilders, some bodybuilders are athletic,…

I just started doing inverted rows at home tonight. Can't do them with full range of motion though, any tips? Should I set the bar higher? Should I do them with the knees bent?

17% is in the healthy range for a male last I checked. I would've been very lean at the higher end of bmi but we aren't talking about being ripped here. We are talking about healthy body fat levels. An average man can be 17% bf at a normal bmi. And the average man is not shredded at a bmi of 25. Dumb argument. I didnt…
-
I could give my own exemple but I don't know if it's good enough for you, after 2 and a half years of weightlifting I was 17% body fat at a bmi of 28. That's not elite bodybuilder status. That fullback is ok but he's not that muscular. He's tiny compared to the average fullback in the NFL that's for sure. The average NFL…

I wasn't talking about very muscular men, I gave a conservative exemple of someone who put on 10-15lbs of muscles. I already said after a year OR MORE you can gain more than that. Also what is the threshold for someone to be well over the range of healthy bmi?
-
I'm talking about the average man, I speak in generalities. It's not an absolute statement. Also the point is why go straight to bmi instead of using other measures that are just as valid?
-
My experience differs from yours. I live in Canada, i've visited 10+ gyms and it's very common to see really muscular people. I started lifting really young and i've seen the progress of many young lifters, it didn't take long for them to build a considerable amount of muscle mass. Yes they lift heavy and eat a lot of…

First thing in the morning, I measure right at the belly button and fully relaxed with the air blown out. As long as you measure your waist relaxed and you don't flex or suck in. Edit : It's also good to point out that is you do weighed ab exercises, or you do hypertrophy based exercises for abs your waist size might…

Here we go with the disagree spam, have you noticed that I said a year OR MORE in the post he just quoted? It might take more than a year, but look at the bigger point. Gaining muscles while young is relatively easy, even if it's just 10-15lbs of muscles it's enough to put you “slightly” out of the normal range. Meaning a…
-
It may be more than a year for some people but the point is its not hard to gain muscle mass assuming you're fairly young and have normal levels of testosterone. Stop focusing on the one year part, gaining muscle mass is not that hard for most men. I've been around young people who lifts, they put muscle mass on without…
-
Yeah BMI says nothing about body fat levels, the data seems to confirm this. Just take a look at this study :…
-
I will have to quote you, because even an experienced lifter who's healthy at a bmi of 30 is not elite bodybuilder status. I guess i'm a little bit confused by your choice of words.
-
Is a bmi of 29 very far out of the healthy range? We're talking about a difference of 25lbs, about what a man can gain in muscle mass with a year of training.
-
What is very far out of standard BMI range? If we're talking about a bmi of 27 versus a bmi of 25, that's a difference of 15lbs. It is quite significant don't you think?
-
I agree with all of that, it is not useless, it's probably useful for 90% of the population. And there are a lot of questions, for exemple, what is the percentage of the population who lift weights or do resistance training on a regular basis?
-
I didn't know you said that, I haven't read all of your posts. I was replying to your post about elite bodybuilders, i'm well aware that bmi is useful for sedentary individuals. And I don't know what you mean by far outside the range, but after 2 years of weight lifting I had a healthy percentage of body fat at a bmi of…
-
I was replying to someone who was talking about “elite” bodybuilders, when it is much more broad than that. That was the point of my post. When I started weight training 15 years ago a personal trainer said the same thing to me, that it only applies to bodybuilders or athletes. It is nonsense. The point is you don't need…

Small potatoes with the skin on have fiber and they are relatively low calorie. And most importantly they are very filling.
-
I could give another exemple, if I was 5'9 160lbs at 18% bf and gained 20lbs of muscles I would be 10lbs overweight according to bmi even though my body fat percentage would have gone down due to the increased muscle mass. Many people go to the gym or do resistance training at home, it isn't unusual and we're talking about…
-
Although generally speaking, bmi is useful for both genders if we're talking about sedentary individuals. It appears, according to what I have read, women don't suffer from health problems on the higher end of healthy bmi.
-
If for exemple i'm 5'9 150lbs and 15% body fat, I start lifting and gain 20lbs of muscles. Suddenly I am considered overweight in term of bmi even though my body fat percentage is low. When it comes to gender, men have less body fat and more muscle mass. For this reason, it doesn't take much for the average man to put on…

You don't need to be on the level of an “elite” bodybuilder, if you've been lifting for a year or more you will develop a lot of muscle mass. Most of your gains will occur in the first year assuming you eat right and train hard. If you have gained 20lbs of muscles in your first year, then BMI is unreliable. As i've said, I…
