I recently started trying (and I do mean trying) to start running, after sitting on my butt for WAY TOO LONG and actually injuring a meniscus in an earlier attempt to start. I was happy after finishing the 3.25 mile course for the first time the day before yesterday. I did it gain today with the goal of cutting the time…

I too am 47, and just using this site and being honest with myself has helped me alot. I try to keep this perspective. I know I'm not going to get the body of a 21 year old and (I don't want it to be honest), but what I DO want is to be healthy and treat my body the right way. Of course being told that I look good for my…

I do believe in the paranormal, because to many thing happen that are not able to be explained. I don't watch those shows anymore due to my schedule, but I liked them when I did.

Hello Don, I also second what all the others said. DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED! (repeat as necessary) It is slow going at first and there will be setbacks, we're only human after all. There is tons of information out there, and lots of good feedback on this site, all with the intention of helping people. I don't know much, but…

/try this article http://www.acefitness.org/article/2863. I found it very interesting. Also, try looking into a set a resistance tubes. I paid about $14.00 for mine at my local Wally- World (walmart)

I exercise because I know it's good for me. I also do it partly out of fear. Fear of not getting my cholesterol and triglycerides under control, becoming diabetic, heart disease ( all of these are present in my family history). I know if I exercise, It will go a long way towards prevention. That and the good feeling I get…

Hello and welcome aboard. I am no fitness expert, but I say if it starts to hurt, then stop. Take it slow and stay focused on the long term goal. The truth is, you are going to fall down. When that happens, get up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward. There is alot of good advice here, so be sure to look and read…

First off, Thank You for Your Service. I was also turned on to this sight through the VA. It is a great tool, but that is just what it is.. a tool. The support is excellent as well as most of the topics. Judging by your post, it sounds like your mission (Why are you doing this) isn't clearly defined. I believe that once…

I agree with the tips. I am also going to try them out. I have blisters on my heels and I do get the numb toes. I am usually able to push through it though.

Much like the original poster, My Nurse at the VA told me quite bluntly, I needed to make some lifestyle changes, or it would only be worse later. After a visit to the dietician (also an MFPer) I got myself on here and am quite impressed at the results so far.

Did the majority of my shopping at ALDI when I lived in Germany. We do the majority of our shopping at ALDI now as well. With the produce, it can be hit and miss sometimes, but the values (compared to the other major retailers in my area) can't be beat.

Mine was being told very bluntly by my nurse that I had "fatty liver disease" in addition to high cholesterol as well as being on the cusp of becoming diabetic. She didn't pull any punches when she told me I could either put in the effort now to fix it with diet and exercise, or they'd be seeing me within ten years or so…

Here in Wisconsin, we get hot summers and COLD winters. My theory is you can always add/subtract layers if needed and the important thing to remember is HYDRATE.

The scale shows that you've lost weight. Try not to sweat the whole appearance thing, the body DOESN'T lose weight in spots, but rather over the whole body. My advice is embrace the fact that you're down 12 lbs. and use it as motivation to get to where you want to be. Oh, and Congrats !
-
47 years young here. I think you'll get out of this site what you put into it. I personally don't have a weight loss goal as much as a goal to live healthier. Any weight loss that I get from that is just BONUS. Feel free to add me if you like.

I use Centrum. have been for years.

I have been on this site for about two and one half months now and am down 18 lbs. It is possible.

same here in my area with bike riding and it getting chilly, Hope to still get some rides in. thinking about starting jogging again, or looking into a cheap indoor biking option.

Hello and welcome. From what I have gathered, how often you way yourself is totally up to you. Some people (myself included), weigh themselves daily. Others do it less often. Stay strong and believe in yourself. You can do it.
-
I faced the same thing when I started. The best recommendation I can give you is to try different things and when you find something you like, stick with it. For me, it's bicycling. I try and do an hour a day, I am looking at snowshoeing for the winter months or, an indoor bike.
-
Mine is the same way. I weigh myself at the same time everyday(right after the "ahem" morning routine) and it is the same until the scale moves downward and then it seems I plateau for a while and the process repeats itself.
-
I agree it is tough. But when you start seeing results, it proves that it was worth it. Hang in there.

One word: Moderation. Well, three actually:daily exercise.

I am the same age, although unlike you, I have cholesterol issues, as well as being pre- diabetic. I have only been on here for about 2 months and am already down from 261 to 248 lbs. If I had a goal, it would be to just try and live healthy. If I can do it, so can you. think positive thoughts, and good things will happen.
