Don't eat less. Eat better. Try to make one change a week -- a healthy but satisfying lunch or breakfast choice that you can enjoy. I'm confident that's the crux of the problem. A simple start: Look at a superfoods list like this one and find one thing you like, and add it in. Fresh blueberries are in season!…

Wow, thank you! All good suggestions. I'm a little overwhelmed, a state in which it's hard to think; so THANK YOU for helping me see so many options. A trip to Whole Foods tonight also unearthed a quinoa "flake" hot breakfast cereal. I'm on my way.

Fantastic progress! Keep it up!

This.

I don't either, in truth -- I felt different right away after I got that protein up.

Having decided to try EM2WL, one thing I am definitely NOT doing during this process is asking too many other people what they think. Because I know what I would have said a year ago to the idea of eating 1900 cals: NO WAY! The only thing that matters is how my body responds, and that's a very individual thing, not a…

I felt that way two weeks in (bloated, stuffed). Now just over one month in, the tables are turning, the scale is dipping, my stomach is flattening out and my faith is increasing ... dramatically. : ) I did notice an improvement around the three-week mark, right after I got my macros closer to 40/30/30, specifically after…

Age 49 (50 in July!) 5' 4" and 145 BMR 1450 TDEE 2200 CUT 1900 Work out hard with weights 3x a week. Moderate cardio 2-3 more days (walking). As of today I'm one month into eating 1700-1900 daily, after a three-month plateau at 1200. I also adjusted macros to 40/30/30. The scale ticked up to 149 around the three-week mark,…

The March 2012 issue of Harper's magazine had an in-depth article about this that cited clinical studies. It is available online but only if you have a subscription. See also: http://www.webmd.com/cancer/news/20080331/fasting_may_improve_cancer_chemotherapy

That's the spirit. Two weeks is too soon. Six weeks is more like it. Kill those weights, hit that protein and believe. That's my mantra. And it appears to be working.

Love this one! I'll add a silly little interim NSV. Yesterday my "saturday jeans" (the comfy ones that look good with sneakers but don't necessarily hug my *kitten*) felt a little extra loose in the waist, even though the thighs are a little tighter due to all the leg work I've been doing. I got a crazy idea when it came…

So very happy to hear this! Hanging in there definitely takes a leap of faith, so hearing success stories like yours is huge for those of us who are following this path.

Not everyone with a job title deserves to have the role. That guy was a first-class jerk at best, with apparently no communication skills AND a very narrow view of what fitness progress looks like. He made a lot of assumptions about you that are plainly wrong. I'm just sorry you ran into him. You are on a good path and…

The scientific method is a beautiful thing! To articulate the current hypothesis I think many of us are testing: "If I work out strong (heavy weights) and get more protein (approaching 40/30/30) and eat closer to my TDEE - 15%, my body will lean out and eventually start losing, even if slowly." That beats the heck out of:…

Gypsybug, how long since you started on the EMTWL path?

LOL yes!

I do a variety of variants of the following four-chapter workout, with active rest (3 min treadmill or one minute kettlebell swings in between each chapter): Chapter 1: ABS Turkish get-ups with a small kettlebell Plank or sideplank Reverse crunches (repeat above) Chapter 2: LOWER Squats Lunges Side lunges (repeat above)…

Hit my new macros for the first time today -- it took me three weeks to build up the mindset/habits/pantry to get that much protein in. I forgot what it feels like to be hungry. I am FUUUUULLL!

Love seeing this -- I know it's relative but VERY inspiring to see how strong you have become! I'm feeling stronger now that I'm EATING and look forward to pushing more weight up and down. If I can't lose that last 10 pounds, I will turn it into muscle!
-
Very inspiring! Thank you for sharing.
-
I'm 49 and am eating exactly that. Three weeks in, no gain, no loss, and no measurements yet, but I feel very energized and strong in the gym. Stay tuned.

Good point, Bean. My 30# dumbbells x 2 are sets of 12.

That's the spirit, gemiwing! And by successful I simply mean -- MFPers who are pursuing this path! : ) I agree it's very inspiring to hear how strong you ladies are!

I added in the dense "super foods" that didn't fit into the 1200-calorie menu: walnuts, pumpkin seeds, avocado, coconut oil, sardines, more eggs. Also carry protein powder (the kinds that mixes easy, meaning microfiltered whey) and a shaker cup. I think that getting the macros to 40/30/30 (carbs/protein/fat) is as…

I upped to 1900 a week ago and am learning the ropes. Protein is the elusive macro and I'm finding ways to make it work. Will post results/pics in 5-6 weeks. Meanwhile, thanks for the inspiration. You all look fantastic!

Lost 11 pounds over 5 months (Aug-Dec 11) at 1200 net, eating back some cals. Plateaued since Jan, now I'm trying the increased calorie amount (1900!) based on BMR and TDEE as calculated several places. Also lifting heavy/ Three days in. Will report back in two months.
