  • Yay, same here! I'd love to have other IIFYM friends. I like to creep people's food diaries for ideas too.
  • yum! coconut oil

  • I followed Hal Higdon's plans for my last race and it went pretty well except I thought he needed to put in a tad longer taper at the end. They are here: http://halhigdon.com/training/51130/Half-Marathon-Training-Guide In general, you'll want to increase by around no more than 10% of your previous long run mileage each…
  • Ditto on the Old Navy! Workout gear is part of my work wardrobe and so I've considered buying something "nicer" and so far I just can't pull the trigger on Lululemon gear. I probably will treat myself to a pair of shorts or pants at some point because I love their detailing and I hear it's well made... and for me, like I…
  • A few snacks will help boost calories yet keep your metabolism running better... which will help weight loss too. I would beef up breakfast a bit more too. Good luck!
  • I sampled a lot of varieties this month as I experimented with going dairy free. Almond milk was ok but I know some love it so it is a matter of personal taste. Like many others, I stay away from processed soy. My fave option by far was So Delicious Coconut milk.. both plain and vanilla... yum! I love it. No funky taste. I…
  • I rely on the squat rack at the gym so I can get under it like the pp said. Do you have access to one?
  • Physique - especially after seeing so many pictures on here of people at different points in their fitness journey. They might weigh even more but look leaner. It's amazing!
  • Can you put oatmeal in a little thermos (like the kind that are 6" or so tall) with some walnuts and dried fruit? Quick oats only take a few minutes in the microwave. The walnuts give an extra nutritional boost and some staying power to keep you full. I've heard of people making little omelets in muffin tins and then…
  • We love this too! So yummy! My son had peanut allergy and even though he's been through the desensitization program my kids are so used to sunbutter now that they prefer it to pb.
  • Trader Joe's PB with sea salt or Smucker's Natural just for less sugar... but I won't lie, if I was just going for taste I'd probably be able to put away a whole jar of creamy Jif. It's nostalgic for me and delicious!
  • I'm torturing myself for a month trying to go gluten and dairy free (ibs symptoms) so today I had salad greens with some veggies that I'd prepped ahead of time, a pouch of tuna, and a hard boiled egg chopped up. I threw in a little olive oil vinaigrette and it was really good! My friend suggested that I grill a bunch of…
  • look for a short list of ingredients (a lot of the flavored ones have chemically yucky stuff) a high protein count and if you want to be super duper healthy, no added sugar. I love some of the Chobani flavors but I don't love all the added sugar so like some others mentioned, Fage plain is a really good way to go. It's…
  • I look in front of me... occasionally taking in the sights around me because that's one of the great pleasures of running for me. I did go to a running clinic where they said to be sure not to look way up ahead while going up a hill because you crank your neck back too far. I think it screws with your ability to breathe as…
  • Woohoo! I started doing this for training for a 20k and I only really walk for like 30 seconds every mile but for some reason it makes a huge difference for me mentally. I think knowing that you always have a little break coming around the corner makes it seem easier. Your speed will improve over time, for now, it's…
  • ditto on Rippetoe... also love New Rules of Lifting for Women by Schuler, Forsythe and Cosgrove. Solid information and unintimidating.
  • If you were really sedentary for a number of months you'd be surprised how everything else weakens too - after I had hip surgery I lost so much strength in my butt and legs... and often knee pain actually comes from weak butt and hips not moving as they should. Just go slow and like everyone else said, ice, rest, etc. My…
  • My friend hoards their coconut oil because it's so popular that it's often out of stock! The price on it there is quite a bit lower than anywhere else around here. We love their sunbutter for our peanut-allergic kid. It's also considerably cheaper there than elsewhere. I stock up on things like dried fruit and nuts there…
  • I've heard even the big proponents of clean eating say that for the most part they follow an "80/20" rule of eating clean 80% of the time... if you beat yourself up over every bite it probably won't be something that you can stick with. Have you thought about the reasons you want to change your eating habits other than…
  • I dunno, I haven't read the "men's version" but the author essentially wrote the women's book to give women a more friendly intro to training and address some female issues. As for the actual workouts, he stresses repeatedly that women should train like men do so I think you'd be fine. The women's version begins with the…
  • yup it has carbs too... but it's a complex carb and good for you. :)
  • Quinoa too! It's a great grain that also has protein. I have a terrible time getting my protein goal and I'm not even a vegetarian! If you can manage it, a protein shake, especially after your lifting workouts, is a really easy solution. It's really the only way I can get a really fast 30g or so of protein in me. I don't…
  • I know that's tricky - greek yogurt is so yummy. Some protein shakes aren't safe for dairy allergy but I know there are ones made from soy protein and that should be fine for you if you want something that's quick. Certain forms of protein are more absorbed than others so if it's a true concern that you're not getting…
  • Great tips thanks! I still have fond memories of my first time in clips... getting to a stop sign and then tipping over onto my husband and his bike. So smooth. Haha. I love road riding now but am just dipping my toe into riding single track on my mountain bike. I went a few weeks ago on what I'd been told was "beginner"…
  • Ouch! That sounds painful ;| I'm working on this goal. I think I've heard that chinups are slightly easier than pull-ups but I'm not sure about that and if so, why. Pullups are with palms away, chinups are palms toward you yeah? Our gym has the assisted pull-up machine but I've also heard of using a bar on a squat rack and…
  • Yay you!! I had a lot of success with the C25K program... it's a great way to prevent injury by going in too fast/too much too soon and you'll feel a lot happier about your workouts. Stretch lots after if you're having tightness/discomfort, it makes a big difference for me at least. As far as the heavy leg feeling goes...…
  • I'd say inches... if you've ever seen the pics on here of body composition before/after training, you can be at the same weight or close to it and look remarkably different. Particularly if you're doing a lot of building of muscle mass you might not see the dramatic weight loss you'd like but your body changes.
  • What we learned in strength and conditioning classes was pretty much exactly what Brian said.
