Not totally true. If you've been doing plenty of cardio, you've been using muscles to do it, those muscles will be good and strong, usually large muscle groups in your legs. And if that cardio includes rowing, then the arms and core are involved as well. I love strength training, but cardio is really good too.

Is that oatmeal or rolled oats? Yum either way, will try this, thanks.

Hi Tennille, you've made a good decision getting onto this site, it works and it's free and there's no gimmicks. You might like to search for young mums' groups to chat with women who are in the same situation as you. Many of us have had kids and stacked on the weight, it is not a life sentence, with persistence you will…

Hey, happy birthday. Did your doctor tell you not to exercise? I guess they must have a reason. But unless it was your doctor I would say get out and get moving. Walking is fantastic exercise, 30 minutes a day or whatever you can fit in is great for your heart and general wellbeing, dancing around with the children would…

Not much time to respond now (have to work) but find this a really interesting discussion. There seems to be confusion between "starvation mode" and changes to metabolic rate as a result of weight/body composition changes. I have some references which I'll dig out later.
-
And every response before you suggested a visit to the doctor, I'd say that they gave good advice.

That I don't get to go as often as I'd like because I work away alot, waaaah.

I love these, thanks. And the penguinone.

After a challenge by an MFPer for hard research I looked this up - to lose weight the best strategy is to eat less than you normally do and exercise more than you normally do, especially if you normally don't get at least 30 minutes a day moderate exercise. Moderate means breathing with some effort (but not gasping). Eat…

Thread hijack - just went to tell someone who's posted on this thread that their new profile pic is really cool and I find they've unfriended me. *insert surprised/sad face here*

Then there's the Hox and Sox genes and the Cox inhibitors

First - you MUST get the okay from your doctor, and ask her about exercises she thinks you should NOT do. All the following suggestions are subject to the restrictions recommended by your doctor. Second - I am an almost trained PT (still to finish some assignments before I get my certificates). I am NOT a…

Glad to see you're on the mend.

A good morning workout including 5-10 minutes warmup, some mobilisation (stretches), then 20-30 mins lifting (could do 15-20 if time is pressing) followed by a short cool down and some more stretching should not wear you out for the day, you might feel energised and into it, especially once your fitness has improved. That…

During strength training sessions I play I Feel Better by Hot Chip, over and over, no idea why, but it helps me focus and lift well.

I'm interested in the basis for the classification of fats into "good" and "bad". Can we have a definition for "good" and "bad" please, with a reference or 2 that I can have a look at. Thanks.

Have a limb (preferrably leg) amputated, put on ice for the duration of the weigh-in, win your bet, then get it reattached.

Hi all Another "ex-scientist" here, strange term, how do you stop thinking about things scientifically? Anyway, BSc Pathology (immunology/genetics) post grad work on marsupial immunogenetics and microbiology (infection control), lectured for awhile, then back to uni for BSc (Viticulture and Oenology, winemaking), now…

Any chance of some good references for this? What constitutes too much? It is potentially pretty serious.

Don't want to be rude, but why are you asking this on a fitness/weight loss forum? How do you know the responders will have medical training? Probably best to discuss the side effects of statins with your doctor - she or he is obliged to disclose the known side effects and the frequency if they are going to prescribe them…

Oh dear, what a crap situation. I don't have any magical ideas, just really feel for you. Hope the pain is manageable. Just a thought - since the toes/leg is problematic, what about an exercise bike with toe clips so your good leg can direct things?

Definitely NOT muscle gain after only one month. Muscles may hold more fluid after intense exercise, but that's not increase per se. You say you look like you're slimming down? Have you taken measurements? you know like waist, hips, chest, thigh? Have they changed? If you're loving the gym, then go for it, at the very…

Might be a very low grade virus, change in the weather, not the best sleep, late night, numerous things could give you an off day. I wouldn't worry unless it persists for more than a few days, then see what your doctor thinks. Congrats on the weight loss so far.

This certainly looks like a family to study. At what age did they develop, or get diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease? There are several diseases that look very similar, did any of them have a definitive post-mortem diagnosis? Back on topic, the big pharma have shareholders to worry about. We seem to have left behind the…

I am at a good weight, and maintaining. I use this site to help maintain my weight with periodic calorie counting (I can put on weight at the drop of a hat, especially as I've got older) and to talk about all things related to fitness and health. My son found it by looking for fitness forums, not weight loss forums. Hope…
