  • Well, all that salt will cause you to retain some fluid, so the scale will probably go up some. Don't panic, it's just fluid, you'll lose it in a day or two if you go back to normal eating, lay off the salt and drink lots of water to flush it out. You'd have to consume an extra 3500 calories to put on 1 actual pound.
  • I'm trying to eat clean also, though I have epic fails now and then. Feel free to add me.
  •
  • I walk and there's one little dog who always has something to prove. I carry a stick and lunge at him while waving it. What really gets him is when I bark at him at the same time.
  • Whatever you do, be careful and get the best surgeon you can. 2 yrs. ago my sister-in-law died from complications of GPB.
  • Excellent, informative post.
  • FWIW - plants can be combined in such ways to give one all the protein necessary for growth and repair, it just takes a little research. As for who determines the best carb intake for any individual - why, that individual, of course. Once I switched to whole grains I've been surprised by how little grain carbohydrate I…
  • Wow! I didn't imagine so many options - will definitely be trying at least some of these. Thanks, everyone.
  • I'm prone to diverticulitis and I started taking probiotics (acidophalus) a few months ago. I feel like it helps.
  • One before breakfast, one after lunch. 2 tsp sugar and 2 Tblsp evap milk. I'm trying to graduate to 1 sugar, 1 milk, then to black. In the summer the afternoon one is iced.
  • Before I joined MFP I lost 14 lbs. No one noticed, including my husband! I did lose it very slowly though, over the course of 4 months. I've since lost 3 more and I'm still waiting for someone to notice. I know it'll feel good when someone finally says something. Congratulations, that's a lot to lose.
  • Congrtulations! What a difference! I just started a week ago at 187 and aiming for 145. Thank you, I feel inspired.
  • I gained 2 pounds within 3 days after I started excercising. Someone here told me that sore muscles retain fluid, and of course muscle also weighs more than fat, and reminded me that you have to consume 3500 extra calories to add a pound of fat. I stuck with what I was doing and sure enough, 6 days later a true pound was…
  • One of the biggest reasons I decided to make a total change in eating was that my sister-in-law died after having the bypass. She was one of the sweetest, kindest, most giving people I've ever known and the world is a worse place for her loss. She developed a blood clot 2 weeks after the surgery, apparently that is one of…
  • I'm new here and new to trying to eat healhfully by doing a mixture of carbs, protein, & fat in moderation. I tried very low carbs once, years ago, just meat, eggs, cheese, and non-starchy vegetables, and stayed on it for 3 weeks, losing weight but feeling sicker every day. I'm now getting carbs from fruit, vegetables, and…
  • LOL! Never thought of it that way, but I always will now!
  • I love to drink. I love it so much that I pretty much had to give it up, because I had difficulty stopping until I'd had 6 or 8 and I craved it every day. It was impacting my health, not to mention my wallet. I can drink a little now and then but it takes huge self-control to stop after one or two. It's usually easier for…
  • Thanks for all the encouragement. I didn't know that muscle soreness could cause fluid retention, that helps explain things. I knew it weighed more than fat but I didn't think I'd built up that much in just a week! It was just so hard to see the scale go up when it's gone steadily done for a few months. I'll just keep…
  • I went for a very long horseback ride, much longer than usual, on Sunday and I am still somewhat sore from that.
  • I'm 5'7", currently weigh 187 with a goal of 145. Honestly, I think 120 is too thin for this height. I weighed 120 for awhile about 25 years ago and looking back I think I was too thin, although I didn't have to work at it. Maybe you can't lose weight because your body is trying to tell you that 130 is a good weight for…
  • I know that feeling but it has nothing to do with my hot flashes. I've had it off and on my whole adult life, it's like a really sad, empty feeling, but takes the form of a physical "ache". I literally feel like I'm "empty". It is very hard to describe, but thankfully only lasts a few seconds. I used to think it was…
  • I think the ice and anemia thing is true. I used to crave and eat tons of ice and turned out to be severely anemic. The cravings went away after I started taking iron.
  • I can gain 3 pounds a day. I'm sure it's water because it's far worse when I overdo the salt.
  • I had a total hysterectomy at 39 and went on HRT immediately. I'd already been overweight for several years at that point and it didn't seem to me the HRT made a difference in my weight. Interestingly, I'd always suffered terrible mood swings before the hysterectomy and they smoothed out a lot afterwards! I know of another…
  • A lot of things happened to lead me up to it, but the last straw was having gallbladder pain that wouldn't go away. Again. Just another sign that I was getting more and more unhealthy, and I knew that if I didn't get healthy, I'd have to give up some things I love doing and some future goals.
  • I tried Atkins once. I stuck it out for 3 weeks and lost 12 pounds but I felt horrible the whole time. Every day I felt worse than the day before in terms of energy level and brain fog. When I finally quit I gained back more than I lost. Interestingly, I now have lost more weight more easily by eating mostly WHOLE grains -…
