  • I'm not sure there are any myths. IMHO, almost all diets work if you do them. Probably the only myth is "you can't lose weight by doing X," at least so long as X leads to a calorie deficit. IMHO, the biggest logical error is "I knew some guy who did Diet X, and he gained the weight back, so Diet X doesn't work." 90%+ of…
  • IMHO, that statement is itself a myth. 1) When someone says "muscle weighs more than fat", the units are undefined. I don't know of any scientific or linguistic principle which implies that "muscle weighs more than fat" should be interpreted as "a pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat." To the contrary, the…
  • Ok, I'm in. Counting snatches as swings but not cleans, I have 3816 so far.
  • 10500 between 9/15/11 and 12/31/11? Let me count up how many I've done.
  • Kettlebells really do range all over the map. Depending on the exercises you do, the intensity, and the weight, it can be just about anything. Your best bet is to wear a HRM. Second best is to measure perceived effort, or to find an equivalent exercise to the routine you're doing.
  • That's what I would have said, but I don't disagree with Tom Venuto if I can help it. BS or not, he's produced a lot of results in his day. IMHO, if you think you might be an ectomorph, try doing Venuto's suggestions and track how they work for you. If they work, great. If not, try something else.
  • That's weird, I forgot weight too. My 9/6/11 weight was 181.0 and my 10/21/11 weight was 167.4
  • Updated - Guess I better try to pick up the pace!
  • You gained ten pounds from April - October? Have you taken measurements, and are your clothes tighter/looser/about the same?
  • Nicely done, Lorina!
  • Week 1: Average net calories/day: 1936. Weight change: Lost 1.8. Estimated TEE: 2836 Week 2: Average net calories/day: 1693. Weight change: Lost 1.6. Estimated TEE: 2493 Week 3: Average net cal/day: 2036. Weight change: Lost 0.4. Estimated TEE: 2236 Week 4: Average net cal/day: 1795. Weight change: Lost 3.6. Estimated TEE:…
  • Updating my post from 9/6/11. Then: Today: Age:42 Sex:M Body Fat: 18.1% (probably closer to 16-17% -- taken first thing in morning with BEI scale) Daily Calories: 1865 net, 2105 gross (last 28 day average, net is after deducting cardio exercise calories, gross is total calories consumed)
  • 1. Like the native Americans, agribusiness uses every part of the pig. ;-) 2. Seriously, the fact that it looks gross doesn't really sway me. Presumably, getting the last few scraps of meat from the bones reduces the amount of grain, land and energy per meat calorie required, which is normally a good thing. 3. Let me say…
  • Much of your organic food was genetically modified by humans, just more crudely. Wild berries weren't. Of course, the berries were genetically modified by natural selection, coding errors, and cosmic radiation. My point was just that I'm for a world where we can all choose the level of GM we're comfortable with. If you dig…
  • Anyone who hasn't looked up where pink grapefruit comes from has missed out. It's an amazing story.
  • <deleted my double post - sorry!>
  • IMHO, yes, you're getting bad data if you either: (1) pick the lower number from a series if you don't like the first number; or even (2) only take a series, then average, if you don't like the first number. If you take a series of weights (same number every week) and choose the lowest (or second lowest) every time, then…
  • Most studies show that it's very difficult to add net lean mass. In other words, you can develop the muscle groups you're working out, but you may end up losing some lean mass someplace else, now that you don't need as much strength to stand up, climb stairs, breath, etc. Some qualifiers: 1) The studies are for groups, not…
  • Sounds like we agree! (That's my proposal - that I be allowed to buy GM food if I want, and that you be allowed to live on wild berries if you want.)
  • OP: I hear you, but personally I'm in favor of allowing people to buy GM foods after FDA approval. All products of agriculture are genetically modified, from selective breeding to produce large ears of corn through full on irradiation of seeds to produce new species (pink grapefruit, anyone?). Mac: I think she means to…
  • What do I think of a "cheat" day? Well, it's very kind of you to offer, but I'm not that kind of guy, and in any case, I don't think my wife would go for it. Seriously: I track average calories for the week, and try to keep them in line without going too low. So if I have a 2300 calorie day, I might plan a few 1500 calorie…
  • I did not know that. So if someone asks me "How much would I weigh on the surface of Mars", what units should I use?
  • Then I need to know where you're measuring. A pound of muscle in Salt Lake City weighs the same as a pound of fat at the top of Mount Everest, but you can't say the same for a kg. ;-)
  • Thanks for bringing us back to the topic. On the gripping hand, even though a given volume of muscle DOES weigh more than an equal volume of fat, it's very very hard to add a pound of muscle, particularly when you are in a calorie deficit. So I think most people believe that the weight gain associated with an increase in…
  • The problem is that you haven't defined your units. 1) If you are asking whether a given volume of muscle weighs more than an equal volume of fat (under the same conditions) , then the answer is yes, the muscle weighs more. 2) If you are asking whether a given weight (or mass) of muscle weighs more than an equivalent…
  • Walked and rowed some more.
  • It doesn't change my decisions by much. When I'm not counting calories, I don't care, and when I am counting calories, I can make a pretty close guess. I agree that posting calories, is convenient, and I try to go to places that do,, but I am not sure how often it affects what I choose once I get there.
  • Movies: LOTR, no question. Books: I would have said LOTR, but now that I think about it, Harry Potter comes closer than I would have thought.
  • IMHO: 1. Cut down on starches and sugars. If anything, eating small amounts of them make me MORE hungry, not less. 2. Set your calories at a realistic number. Tell MFP you want to lose 1 pound per week, not 2. 3. Try making at least one new recipe a week, and find healthy foods you like to eat. Learn to love leftovers -- I…
