  • This is a major problem that requires major solutions. I say use all the tools in the tool chest. It's not a time to cut corners. If you can get professional help then go for it. I'm trying hypnotism. Is it working? I don't know but it can't hurt and it certainly has motivated me and made me more accountable. Good luck.
  • Food scientists have not yet figured out that one size does not fit all. I have not done well in the past on whole grains and fruit because I tend to over-prefer them to protein. Cutting them back to a minimum seems to be working better, so eggs, yolks and all, have been a life saver for me personally.
  • I think it's important to differentiate between physical cravings and emotional or mental cravings. If you are able to convert body fat to energy then you should ideally not have physical cravings. The other kind is always there to some extent but mine are only 10-20% as powerful as the physical kind. I prefer to satisfy…
  • I'm not really an engineer but if I were I would say to try one side and see if you like it first. If not then at least you haven't totally screwed up. (Sometimes I crack myself up.) My first wife went from an A-B cup to a C cup and it totally increased her self-confidence when other men started noticing. I guess I…
  • Hey, Carl. Your best option would be to pack your own lunch and snacks. If that's not practical, here are some ideas I got by googling 'low carb fast food'. You can hitchhike from these or google for more ideas. Good luck. "If you find yourself at a fast food restaurant and want something that will go easy on your blood…
  • I think 3 lb. in the first week is excellent no matter what your initial weight. I hope you've found that your body is no longer craving carbs and that it hasn't been too much of a struggle for you physically at least. The mental part will take a bit longer I've found but this too shall pass. Remember to get some fiber and…
  • Hello. Ed here from Indiana. I'm retired and have been diagnosed type 2 since 1995. I've gone the route from oral meds to Byetta to both Novolog and Lantus insulin injections. I'm also a carbohydrate addict and was blowing through all the medications as a result. My blood glucose was controlled some of the time but not all…
  • The short answer for me is that insulin has been a vicious circle of eating more, gaining weight, and becoming more and more insulin resistant. At first I thought it was a good thing but after reading Gary Taubes' book, now I'm convinced it's not. At least for those who are capable of controlling T2 by other methods. For a…
  • As you say, it's different for different people. You can wait and see if you lose weight on 60 g. of carb, (40-50 net carbs) and then reduce or add carbs depending on that. But since you are already familiar with ketosis, I would get some ketone test strips and get a quicker idea of how you are doing that way. A lot of…
  • Anything that gets you moving is good. Climbing steps is good cardio and most homes have at least some stairs. Invest in a Wii Video Game device and have fun while you're exercising. Or just move along with a TV exercise program. That's all I got.
  • My doctor said alcohol without food will decrease my blood glucose and he was right. But he also said to limit it to just one drink and obviously not with a sweet mixer. Other than that it's also supposed to be heart healthy in moderation. I think it works better for reduced carbs than it does for reduced calories. Pros:…
  • Twice a day when I'm progressing and annually when I'm not. I kind of split the difference between my morning weight and night weight and I need to see it three consecutive mornings before I record it. Also I add 5-6 lbs. for what the doctor thinks I weigh because I don't carry a purse and there's never a little basket in…
  • True but, just to be clear, this is a separate issue from the blurry vision caused by lens swelling. Retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels on the back of the eyeball, the retina. Much more serious than a temporary change in vision from a rapid change in blood glucose.
  • Escali Model 157EB. All the nice features and easy-to-read display except it's not backlit. Saves batteries but wastes electricity because I always have to turn on a light to read it. :glasses: Hmmm ... maybe I should take off my sunglasses. There, much better now. (Caution: uses two CR 2032 watch batteries so it…
  • Well of course you're sad. It's not depression when you have good cause, unless the family problems were ten years ago I suppose. As others have said, take a break from this for awhile and come back when things have settled down a bit. Just try not to throw it all out the window in the meantime. Do what you can and forget…
  • I'm just throwing this out there in case someone doesn't know about it. It's well known in the diabetic community that extreme changes in blood sugar levels affect the lens shape in the eyes. This could make your vision worse or, if your vision was already bad, could improve it temporarily. Anyway, we diabetics don't go…
  • Don't beat yourself up about this too much. We're supposed to be able to trust doctors, nutrition experts and our government representatives. But once we are exposed to an alternative hypothesis, then it's really up to each of us to find out what works for us. We are ultimately responsible for our own health. I have to…
  • Works great in the oven and my wife thought it was much better. I used a toaster oven at 325 deg. for 16 minutes and put them in a standard muffin tin. Didn't think they were quite done so gave them a couple more minutes on bake and 2-3 minutes more under the broiler to brown the tops. Next time I'll try a regular oven and…
  • I agree with the sauce ideas but I would use real butter also. You probably don't want to hear this and I may be out of order here, but you probably won't really learn to appreciate vegetables until you cut way back on sugar. At least that's me.
  • Brilliantly observed and stated. :flowerforyou:
  • It's an addiction, not a lack of will power. Treat it as such and don't beat yourself up about it. It's really much easier to break the physical addition than you think it will be. The mental issues are a bit tougher.
  • I took all seven (including my own) inputs, converted the ones not in percentages to percentages, and averaged them out. The average for this admittedly small sample is: Carbs = 12% (of total daily calories) High = 20, Low = 5 Fat = 61% H = 72, L = 33 Prot = 27% H = 50, L = 21 My own numbers for the past few days were 15%…
  • And then add five to six pounds for the weigh-in at the doctor's office. At least that's true for men. We don't carry purses (well, most of us don't) and those key rings, cell phones and rolls of pennies add up quickly. I know 5 lbs. isn't a huge percentage in my case but it's the principle of the thing. I worked hard to…
  • Since you brought it up, here are some interesting diet tips on alcoholic drinks from Oprah's site. It's oriented more toward reduced calories than carbs but it's still good to read I think. I'm neither fer nor agin any of it. (That's how I talk after two of them) :drinker: I'm just putting it out there. Example: What You…
  • Looking forward to getting my ring off over my knuckle again. Not that I need to take it off but it will just feel good when I can. At least I can turn it now.
  • Exactly what I was thinking. Throw in some more veggies, put the cauliflower on top and Bob's your uncle. Just the thing for the coming cold winter nights.
  • Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I'm low-carbing and trying to grasp the protein-fat balance too. All of this makes good sense to me.
  • I see carbs as an addiction that turns on the cravings so no cheat day for me. It's not worth it. As long as I'm not craving then I don't need it anyway. That doesn't mean I might not tack on a few extra carbs occasionally but not enough to take me out of ketosis. Everyone is different though so you have to discover what…
  • I was hardly ever thirsty before cutting back on carbs. Now I have no trouble drinking the 8 cups per day plus coffee and other liquids. I do try to front load most of it to morning so I'm not up so much during the night getting rid of it. :drinker: I drink whatever temperature water helps the most with geting my daily…
  • Thanks for all the tips. I tried the chocolate (with a few blueberries) over the weekend and couldn't really taste the chocolate that much. Think I will try the cream cheese with chocolate topping next time. And, time permitting, the oven instead of the microwave. If these can help you stay with your low carb lifestyle,…
