  • Lose the shoes. They aren't helping you run. OP, just keep it up. There are good runs and bad ones. You're doing fine.
  • I buy a big sack of frozen precooked chicken breasts, and keep them in the freezer at work. They heat up in about two minutes in the microwave, and go great on a salad. The protein keeps me feeling full until dinner, and a big salad with the chicken and dressing is about 300 calories.
  • What does he WANT to do? Before jumping headfirst into something as time-consuming as calorie tracking, why not start off with just a little more exercise at first. Is he interested in running with you? Obviously, since you're training for a marathon, you've got a great fitness base already. You could do the first few…
  • +1 for cycling. It's a great way to get a powerful cardio workout that's not very stressful on the knees, especially if your gym has spin bikes with clipless pedals, or even good cycles with toe straps. Back in high school, I tore the hell out of my MCL while skiing. Cycling was a big part of the PT I was given to rehab my…
  • From what I'm told, people with a lot of weight to lose can tolerate larger calorie deficits and faster initial weight loss than people who have less to lose. Here's what worked (and still works) for me: I look at my calorie goals as a budget. If I'm hungry and have room in my "calorie budget", I eat. If I'm over budget, I…
  • *Checks pants* Nope, not just for girls.
  • These are all very good points. I do have a question, though. What are the components of RMR? I ask because hart rate is obviously a big part of metabolism. People who are in good cardiovascular shape tend to have a lower resting heart rate than they would in poor cardiovascular condition, leading one to assume that poor…
  • Yeah, because it would be a real shame for a teen who's looking for help to actually GET SOME, right?
  • LIke others have said, simply having "running shoes" is not the same as having the RIGHT running shoes. If you;re going to get serious about running, you'll have to go to a serious running store to get shoes -- at least, your first pair. So, how do you find a "serious running store"? Easy. Google knows everything. Look up…
  • My library lends ebooks. Many of them do now, and mine is very receptive to title requests. I send them an email asking for the title, along with the ISBN, and usually within a few days, I gt an email back to inform me that the title is in and being reserved for me. Bing, bang, boom.
  • I won't wear a bikini either. Of course, since I'm a man, it'd be kind of weird if I did. Get over it, OP. You can't remake the world to fit your views.
  • See my ticker. Each of those pounds has been sweated off on the bike or on my feet running. Of course, diet has a LOT to do with it as well. A good 3.5 mile run for me burns off only around 600 kcal*, or about half of a Big Mac, per my Polar FT4. * and I'm a big dude, too at 6'5" and 235. Smaller, better in-shape, or more…
  • Endurance first. Speed will come after. When I started C25K this time around, my running pace was around 12:00 miles. Fast forward to a few weeks after graduating C25K, and I ran my first organized race at a 10:30 pace. That's not fast by any stretch, and as a Clydesdale, I'll never be a fast runner. However, even at…
  • I think that either: You are getting more calories in than you think you are. -or- You're not burning as many as you think on the treadmill. It's easy to miss the mark if you're estimating on either one. Try actually weighing/measuring your food portions if you're not doing that yet. Also, make sure that however you count…
  • I have lost a bunch of weight once before, but it was due to health problems. I had massive kidney stone problems, multiple surgeries, and months (literally) on serious painkillers. I lost 40 lb, but I can't recommend it as a diet method. Then, I drank too much beer and put a bunch of weight back on, plus I was still…
  • Coke zero, lime Diet Coke, and, of course, beer.
  • Have a huge green salad with some lowfat / low-cal dressing.
  • You run carrying jugs of water? Why? oooohhhhh. I see. nevermind. OP, I find that I prefer to run outside, because of the changes in terrain, scenery, and the great cooling effect from running outdoors instead of in. I have to make mysel go to the gym to run on the treadmill during bad weather. Great music helps.
  • Keep eating healthy foods, but look for more calorie-dense ones like tree nuts, peanut butter, brown rice, and the like. Fruits and veggies are great, but it's hard to get all your caloric needs met with them when you're working hard.
  • Bourbon, rocks or neat. One oz of bourbon runs about 70 kcal, unless you're drinking Wild Turkey 101, which is a bit higher since it's 100 proof as opposed to the 80 proof of most bourbon. Well, that's what I choose, anyway. If straight bourbon is too strong for you, it mixes well with Coke Zero.
  • Nope. There's always beer.
  • Disagree. If your HRM is missing beats, then it will register a lower HR than you are working at and calculate a lower "calorie burn" number.
  • They might. However, speaking as a man, for the entirety of my sex, we really don't mind at all. Deep inside, we all love every boob of every size imaginable.
  • I ran my first organized 5K race last Saturday. I usually run around 3 miles in a workout, and I was shooting for a pace of 10:00 miles, which works out to 31 minutes for the 5K. I ran it in 32:16, at a pace of 10:30, so I think I can do better next time. That put me in #193 of 356 overall, just below the middle of the…
  • I'm a pretty big dude, at 6'5", 240#, and the strap on mine fits fine, with plenty of adjustment left.
  • FWB / FB : Like a lot of people, I had a few of these in college, but in general, not my cup o' tea. I like the whole kaboodle, not just the kit. That may have something to do with why I'm rapidly approaching my 15th anniversary with teh wifey.
  • I recently completed C25K (again), and it's been a GREAT program for me. As a kid, I had awfully flat feet, asthma, and big-time ITB problems. I was told "you'll never be able to run well." Turns out, I really enjoy running. Well, except for maybe running on the dreadmill at the gym or at hotels for business travel, but I…
  • Some people go fishing by putting bait on their line, dangling it out of the boat in the water, and slowly driving the boat around the lake, hoping to hook a big fish. It's pretty much the same thing. The profile, picture, and inflammatory posting are the bait. It's just a pathetic bid for attention, and not worth the time…
