  • 2300 mg a day is fairly easy to stay under until you start eating a lot of processed foods or go out to dinner. For example, if you go to Chilis and order the boneless Buffalo chicken salad, you get over 1000 kcal and a whopping 3730 mg of sodium. Frozen and canned food tends to have the most sodium.
  • On the flip side, maybe they're actually thinking "I should probably do the same thing, but I lack the willpower. I wish I were that motivated." Don't sabotage yourself.
  • It's hard to tell where the line between walkers and runners is. My first 5K, I started too far back and lost a couple of minutes in the first mile backed up behind slower runners. I ran that race at about an 11:00 pace, and finished mid-pack. YMMV and all that.
  • Hey, All. I'm Joe. I'm not running the 2014 Disney Marathon, but my wife plans to. She's a beginner, I've been running slowly off and on for a couple of years. I'm going to be her training partner, but she's planning to run the marathon with her brother, which I think is great. This week is the perfect time to start the…
  • I travel a lot for work too, but mostly domestically, so it's pretty easy to find a hotel with a gym. Even if the hotel doesn't have one, lots of hotels partner with local gyms and can get you a free or discounted day pass. Barring that, there's always body weight exercise you can do in your room. Check out the nerd…
  • This is a touchy topic (obviously). I personally can't have most vaccines -- it's not a belief or a religious thing with me, but egg allergies. That means I haven't had most of the normal childhood vaccines -- Measles, Mumps, DTaP, Flu de jure, etc. etc. I have to count on the people around me to be vaccinated and not…
  • Vitamin Cottage (locations at the link below) carries its own line of unsweetened New Zealand whey powder that has, like the label says, no sweeteners. I find it goes great in fruit smoothies, as the fruit has plenty of sweetness already. http://www.naturalgrocers.com/store-info/store-locations
  • Yep, C25K is great for never-ever runners. I started it last fall, and now I can bang out a 3-miler at lunchtime. It's a great program, and I credit it for making me, at long last, a guy who runs.
  • Here's my usual morning shake: 8 oz. unsweetened vanilla almond milk 2 stalks of kale with the stem stripped off about 3/4 of a frozen banana a handful (around 1/2 C) of frozen strawberries. One scoop of your favorite whey powder. Optional: 1-2 tbs unsweetened Hershey's Dark Cocoa Powder. Blend. Add ice cubes to make 24 oz…
  • I don't know much about Ireland's public libraries, but mine here in the states has TONS of fitness DVD's ranging from easy to Insanity and beyond. Try your local library.
  • Absolutely not. It's just that some people are so damn insecure and oversensitive that the mere suggestion that they haven't been 100% perfect since the beginning of time is somehow an affront. The only time I've worried about complimenting somebody on losing weight was when a co-worker in a different office dropped over…
  • Nobody told me I'd gain 15 pounds when my wife was pregnant. Or another 40 after she wasn't anymore. Welcome!
  • I don't mind the running shoe pics, but the Fivefinger shoe pics have to stop. There's toe cleavage all over the place, and I have a kid at home that I don't want to see that kind of smut. What, are people going to be barefoot in public next? There oughta be a law.
  • I don't shop. I go buy things I need. Unfortunately, when I need clothing, I get frustrated and give up, since I never can find what I like in the size I need (6'5" with 37" arms is a weird size). Luckily, SWMBO likes to shop, and ends up buying about 90% of my clothing. It's win-win.
  • Ingredients: Peanuts.
  • I vote for "don't trust the machine". If I run on a treadmill for 1/2 hour near the upper end of my aerobic capacity (around 155 bpm) I burn 600ish calories per my Polar FT4. I weigh 235. I doubt you can burn double that on an elliptical in the same period of time.
  • Beer. Corn Chips.
  • I'm an "everything in moderation" kind of person, because what I'm looking for is long-term fitness and health. Diets have an endpoint. Leading a healthy life doesn't. Well, I guess it does in that we all die someday, I just want that day to be as far as possible from now. If there's no room in my life to occasionally…
  • This. Whether it's in the gym, on the trails, on skis, at the golf course, or anywhere else, don't offer unless you're asked
  • Holy Crapola! Some of you guys have put in MASSIVE work, and it shows. Congratulations! Me? 6'5", started on MFP at 288 lb. I'm hovering around 240 now, after putting on a few over vacation time. At my lowest, in college, I was around 195, but that was too low. Last spring, I started biking more, and in September, I got…
  • Gym time = My time. I'm one of those "get in, work hard, and GTFO" people. At those times, I don't really want ANYBODY in my face, even my lovely wife. It's entirely possible OP's hubby feels the same.
  • Diet and exercise DO work, as I and a lot of other MFP success stories can tell you. However, you have to avoid some common traps, like underestimating the amount of food you are eating or overestimating the calorie burn from exercise. Either way, it's a long process. Weight loss happens in fits and starts, and it's not…
  • 8 oz vanilla flavored unsweetened almond milk 1/2 of a frozen banana 1 scoop whey protein powder 1 tbsp Hershey's cocoa powder 1 C frozen unsweetened berries of your choice Blend with ice to make 24 Oz volume. ~350 kcal, ~25 grams of protein, and I don't get hungry 'til lunchtime.
  • Aside from the lard and frying, the basic recipe for Buffalo wing sauce is equal parts butter and Frank's Red Hot sauce. Paula Deen has nothing on Buffalo Wings, except that's she'd serve them with Mayo to dip in.
  • You should be asking this question of your doctor, not MFP. Pneumonia is nothing to **** around with.
  • I add some banana slices to the pancakes just after they go on the griddle, then top with a little peanut butter. Delicious! I try to avoid having pancakes or waffles more than 1-2 times a month, though, since I don't do well with all the simple carbs. I may try adding some whey protein to my next round of pancakes, just…
  • I don't bother logging fluid intake. As a long-term stoner (as in kidney stones, got it?), I learned long ago that staying hydrated is key to my personal well-being. I can tell when I'm not getting enough water, because I can walk past the men's room.
  • I'll admit to not reading the whole thread, but just shy of 1-1/2 lb per week seems to me to be pretty effing good. The trick is to NOT think of it as "being on a diet" or anything with a finite ending point. The trick is to change the way you approach food and exercise, to make a long-term, sustainable change in your…
