  • I'm a sonographer and am on my feet all day performing cardiac and vascular ultrasounds. Often it requires putting muscle into the job as well as holding positions that depend on core strength. I don't consider it exercise but do think this type of job is definitely better than a desk job as far as general health goes.…
  • I love my Sodastream. Got my husband to switch from diet soda to carbonated water, which pleased me to no end. So much cheaper than buying bottles of seltzer and no hassle of bringing them home, storing them, recycling them. The cartridges are recycleable and if you turn them into Bed Bath and Beyond for a replacement and…
  • I say enjoy as much as you want in the beginning. I couldn't get enough of it during the beginning of my primal journey. After all, I spent a lifetime avoiding it up until then. Then the body just reaches a point where it has had enough and then it's easy to naturally scale back. I only eat it a couple of times a month…
  • Thanks buddy!
  • Mike: might I persuade you to look for that graph and post it? I'd be really interested in seeing it.
  • It was far cheaper when compared to the grass fed, pasture raised cuts of best quality meat at Whole Foods, but not so much when compared to the cheap, conventional meats at less expensive chains. It also depends on where you live. I'm in the NY metro area and the cost of living is generally higher and we don't have tons…
  • Those numbers are damn beautiful! Way to go Mike! Grokstar indeed!
  • I celebrated my one year primal anniversary in January. Feel free to add me.
  • I loved reading this! Blackout shades sound very tempting! We get a lot of outside ambient light and I know it's disruptive to me. For years my daughter had to sleep with a light on in the room across the hall and it was driving me crazy. There's also a street light right across the street from us.
  • Not I. My doc is so old school he is hung up on the fact that my total is 4 points over 200 and ignoring the ratios. He told me if I was in menopause, he'd prescribe statins. I gave him a blank stare. I doubt he'd know what to do with LDL pattern A/B breakdown.
  • These are my one-year Primal cholesterol numbers. I can't find my pre-Primal numbers but they were within normal range, with the total being under 200: Total 204 (recommend under 200) Triglycerides: 36 (recommend under 150) HDL cholesterol: 81 (recommend over 39, with anything over 60 being a negative risk factor for…
  • Whoops, missed it the first time it was posted Bostonwolf. I know the article was preaching to the choir but hopefully it opened up some other people's eyes in the process. I was in dairy aisle last night, grabbing a few things and I had to stop and look at the nutrition labels on some of those so-called yogurts. It was…
  • Not all stevias are created equal. Sweetleaf is a well regarded brand. Mark at Mark's Daily Apple has no beef with it. Can possibly has some health benefits (see link below) and if you like it in your coffee, get a good quality one. I use it myself. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/stevia/#axzz2LXEbvREu
  • I am in NJ and had my tested with my routine blood work last month. It was 37.5 which is not too shabby for winter time. I have stopped using products with sunscreen in them (moisturizers, makeup) during the winter months and try to get out there and walk during the day with a little sun on my skin. Women might want to…
  • They look pretty good. Sent it to my husband who needs good options when he eats on the go at work.
  • Thanks for the nice words all! Mrs Ables–my doctor who has many qualities I appreciate is also a bit old school and was hung up on the total number. Maybe he isn't aware how important the ratios are or how LDL can break down or how it is even calculated. He said if I was ten years older he'd be concerned. Because it is 4…
  • You will need to take some time off to recover. But I suspect that you are heel striking when your foot lands which is the cause of the shin splints. You should be landing mid-foot. Definitely google some you tube videos on how to have proper running form to avoid future injuries. Also it's really important to give your…
  • Just to further clarify what Monkeydharma said, this NYT article from last year explains why "no nitrate" foods are identical in nitrate content from their conventional cousins: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/02/business/02hotdog.html I think when someone (at least me) thinks of grass fed pigs, means they hopefully have…

  • I had a scale that was inaccurate. The greater the amount of weight, the bigger the discrepancy. So if I weighed my son who was about 35 pounds at the time, it was pretty accurate. If I weighed myself, it was about 5 lbs off. My husband even more.
  • Started in January and wanted to lose 10. I lost 13 over 3 or 4 months and have since maintained it. Now my weight is stable but my body composition continues to improve.
  • Try increasing your fruit and starchy vegetables. If you are working out nearly daily, paleo will cause you to drop a few. But honestly, that initial loss is probably excess water weight caused from cleaning up your diet. Your body will find an equilibrium.
  • For starters, you can try locating a farm via http://eatwild.com/ (that's how I found my cow share) There is a local nursery with farm animals near me with true free range chickens. They can't declare the eggs organic even though they are supplemented with organic feed because they haven't gone through the trouble of…

  • To echo Mike, if possible, buy your meat direct from the farmer. It's incredibly comforting to go and see where your meat comes from and talk to the people who raise the animals. Find someone who takes a lot of pride in the care of the animals and who is selective on the slaughterhouse they use. If you go to the farm, the…

  • This film has literally been in my Netflix queue for years and I could never bring myself to watch it. But maybe since I have cleaned up my diet so well, I can stomach it.
  • Let me know how it goes :)

  • Sprint! I'm plagiarizing my Primal Blueprint book: Maximum effort sprints (note: this can pertain not just to running but cycling, cardio machines, and other HIIT workouts) help increase energy levels, improve athletic performance, and minimize the effects of aging by promoting the release of testosterone and human growth…

  • I have watched three out of four parts. There is not a big emphasis on SAD, though at times there is mention of whole grains. There are however, alarming statistics quoted that SHOULD be eye opening. One of three children born in 2000 will get diabetes. This generation's life expectancy is expected to be shorter than our…
  • Ha, I had cheesecake for my 20% this weekend too. Celebrating my anniversary. And it. was. divine. Back on the wagon today.
  • Thanks all...I'm grateful to report that the liver is clean and no ducts attached. I don't think I could handle that.
  • Good link, thanks for sharing. I've been looking for a really good quality stevia. There are methods of extracting the sweetness out of stevia yourself if inclined (involves stewing leaves in vodka then heating the alcohol out of it.) I'm a fan of Sweet Leaf brand which I get via Amazon prime.
