The Garmin 305 is GPS enabled and doesn't need the footpod sensor unless you are running in a place where you can't get a GPS signal (indoors in many places) or where your physical position isn't actually changing (treadmill). The footpod is useful for those situations and it can also act as a cadence sensor for either…

1700 -1900 seems about the norm for me plus whatever I exercise (500 calories of exercise = 500 calories of extra food I eat). I'm not losing weight super fast, but I am losing about 1.5 - 2lbs per week which I understand is a safe amount. If I ate any less I wouldn't have the energy to allow me to put in the workouts I do…

I have the Garmin 310xt and simply love it. As an HRM it does far more than you need and is oversized and overpriced. However, as an overall training tool it can't be beat (except by the new Garmin 900 series that is coming out this Christmas). I use mine while training for speed/pace, distance, time and HR. After training…

1036 + 3.72 = 1039.72 6km this morning in the cold at the track. The instruction was to do a 5km time trial with a bit of a warm up and cool down. Warm-up was a 2km bike up the hill followed by 400m jog and then 200m walk. 5000m was done in 23:02 with two quick stops for water Cool down was a 400m walk followed by an…

On my long rides or runs I am very careful to ensure I have enough sodium in the system. During huge training rides it's sodium and electrolyte pills mixed in with Cytomax or Heed. On hot summer runs, particularly after already doing a ride, it's more pills mixed in with my Cytomax or Heed. Noticing a trend? When I don't…

1010.98 + 8.92 = 1019.90 14.39km LSRun today keeping firmly in zone 1 for the entire way (went above a bit climbing a hill with an elevation gain of 130m over 5km) sbrandl, every little bit gets us closer to the goal. Hoping for a good recovery for you. S

Wow! 1000 miles in under 2 months. Clearly we are a committed group! a bit more than 23 thousand more to go! heheh. S

I have a tri bike that I bought myself as a reward after my first Olympic. A 2007 Cervelo Dual that has since carried me through a bunch of races and which will carry me through this coming year of training and races. Now I want a road bike and I wish I'd gone that route to start with. The reality is that I'm a middle of…

I live in Vancouver, BC so there isn't really a need to get inside and stay there for the winter. The offseason for me becomes about retaining base while working on skills and dedication. It's also the only way I keep from blimping up :) 3 bikes / week is the goal. 1 longer bike (1 hour 40 minutes today, zone 1 with two 15…

965.11 + 6.23 = 971.34 50 minutes of treadmill running tonight. Kicked in just over 10km with 1 1 minute walk break and 1 30 second walk break mixed in. S

946.46 + 5.89 = 952.35 9.5km tonight doing some intervals and then finishing with hill repeats. S

Another thing that I've found works really well for reducing (never eliminating so far) that cramp feeling is to increase cadence and decrease power in the last few km. A couple of km from transition I'll go into superspin mode trying to keep the cadence up in an easy 100rpm range with little to no power output. Mentally…

BRICK = Bike Run ICK! In 2010 I did a lot of brick work building for Ironman Canada. If you'd asked me what the number one thing that got me through the race was I would have said BRIcks, no doubt. When I was talking to all the folks who were pro/semi-pro though none of them were doing the number and intensity of bricks…

I started triathlon in 2006 as a way to challenge myself to get back in shape. My first short sprint (400m/20km/5km) was followed a week later by a second of the same distance. 3 weeks later I pushed it to the wall and did my first olympic distance (1500m/37.6km/10km) race. I was hooked. My goal quickly became to go…

Every 4th week I do a lower volume recovery week. It really helps with injury prevention and mental fatigue. Coincidentally (or not) it also matches the once a month reduction in weight that I get. Go figure. Of course it's also the week that my body isn't forced to build any muscle to keep up with the demands of training.…

I think Jillian1104 has it right. Hit the gym/track/bike (whatever your personal style is) and plan on a lower intensity workout. If you feel good, ramp it up. Personally, when I start to get sick I try and get a couple of hard pounding runs/rides in to force it out of me. If that doesn't work I start back as soon as I can…

Good luck! Kick butt and have a great time doing it.

I'm a middle of the pack age grouper who has the triathlon bug :) I'm training for my second Ironman which will be in August in Penticton, BC (Canada). This is the off season, so my training is all about keeping fit, losing some weight and building my base. Right now I'm biking 3 times a week (not counting commuting on my…

I think ontheskinnyroad had the right idea. Pick a running program that works for folks using a treadmill or running outdoors. There are a number of good ones (do a search for Couch to 5km or Learn to Run 10km) out there and they all are based around intervals. All of the programs will have some stuff in common. Warm-up,…

880 + 9.4 = 889.4 And just like that we are sitting just below 900, wow! A great and beautiful run this morning. Cold, crisp and pretty out in Vancouver this morning.

793.65 + 5.6 = 799.25 Alright, someone gets to take us over 800 pretty easily! I'd say that we are going to hit 1000 sometime within the first week of November at this rate! Leigh, that's an awesome race report! Congrats on your first 12km, sounds like it was tough but well worth the effort. My race report from the jaunt…

AND? how was it? fun, tough, brutal, amazing? huh, we need a race report thread somewhere.

Raced yesterday in beautiful Vancouver, BC around the Seawall in Stanley Park. James Cunningham Seawall Race 2011 - 5.9mi (9.5km) race. What a hoot. Pissing rain before moving to light rain for the entire race. Tons of folks in costume. A great way to spend the morning. PB for me!:…

768.68 + 3.78 + 5.97 = 778.43 3.78mi treadmill run in 30 minutes on Friday following a 24mile stationary bike ride in 60 minutes in the gym. 5.97mi (supposed to be 5.9mi) race on Sunday around the Seawall in Vancouver. What an excellent day. PB'd the course in sub 47 minutes. Almost 2 minutes off my best for that course.…

686.84 + 3.2 = 690.04 Who's going to put us over 700? 5.07km run at 11pm at night when I finally finished work. Chilly but quiet and comfortable. Very relaxed zone 1 run. 30 minutes.

633.53 + 6.51 = 640.04 a 1 hour run doing 10 and 1s (10 minute run, 1 minute walk). Just wasn't feeling the love of running. Need a break from exercise today :) S
