I've done full and half marathons (and long triathlons) and have used the continuous run and run/walk methods. For a beginner I usually recommend the run/walk method of training. Working your way up to 10 minutes running / 1 minute walking. You wind up running slightly faster for the 10 minutes and then training your body…

558.77 + 5.52 = 564.29 8.9km run tonight at the upper end of zone 2. focused on high cadence and just steady hr. HR looked almost like a flat line, just sitting at 154 :) S

Looking great! Well done entirely. S

553.4 + 5.37 = 558.77 Nice and steady 8.64km today in zone 3. S

Walk breaks in a run totally count towards distance.

My Garmin HRM is substantially lower in calories than MFP which makes me sad. What used to be a 1000 calorie bike ride or run / hour burn is now back in the 800 range. I do find that running HARD (for me) on the treadmill my calorie burn is similar on the HRM and the Treadmill, but at lower intensities the treadmill…

Simply awesome! Very inspiring.

Easy pointers for a half... Relax. You've trained, you will cross the line, everything else is gravy. Pee before you start. Then pee again. Possibly even a third time. Nerves + hydration = peeing. Hydrate in the DAYS before the race. Not the night before, a few days before. Try and get some sleep the night before (we can…

I have a spibelt that I use on ALL runs/bikes, and for long runs I also have my fuel belt. If it's a shorter run though I have the pocket that is on the water bottle that I carry in my hand. With the weather turning right now I also have pockets in my vest (high visibility thank you very much) but I don't actually like…

Nicely done Jeff! Looks like you are close to your yearly target for 2011 already too. woo hooo!

I've had similar problems related to hand position and how much pressure I'm putting on the nerves in my hands as I rest forward. A couple of things I did that made this go away: 1. gloves help. the padding keeps you from putting as much pressure on the nerves. 2. upper body and arm strength. there are great exercises you…

The reasoning behind eating back the calories and losing more weight than when you don't was explained to me by a nutritionist. When you don't eat enough, your body goes into starvation mode. Instead of burning calories it stores them (in all the places we don't want). When you are exercising on top of this, your body…

373.54 + 3.1 (for bregalad5) + 41 for (zoey36918) and + 6.91 (for me today) = 424.55 bregalad and zoey, just add in your runs to the total. S

Question, what are people using for tracking their runs anyway? I'm using a Garmin that I love, but I know folks who are using all kinds of stuff.

368.54 + 5 = 373.54 treesap, way to go on the 1/2 today! kath, way to go on the 1/2 last week! 45 minute zone 2 run for me today, was supposed to do it a few days ago. legs were dead after the bike, ug. more tomorrow, woo hooo.

October totals (so far) Swim: 0 Bike: 147.56mi (238km) Run: 35.34mi (57km) Clearly I need to get my butt in a pool. That first 5 or 6 swims sucks though and I'm dreading them! S

I took a look at that and it seems a bit low on some calculations. I compared it against my HRM information from my Garmin 310XT. I used a V02 Max of 35 as it suggested though. S

I'm in for this challenge. I'm training up right now for Ironman Canada in 2012 (10.5 months to go!). Swimming is a bit weak (non-existent) right now, but I am cycling and running. Will post numbers when I get home. For those who do any / a lot of running... this thread needs some love:…

I wrote a couple of blog posts (external to MFP) about this topic that you might find useful. Treadmills v Outdoor Running Pt 1: http://noattentionspan.com/blog/?p=913 Treadmills v Outdoor Running Pt 2: http://noattentionspan.com/blog/?p=1011 In the first post I had done some research, but by the second I'd done more to…

Congratulations! Talk to your doctor about the best type of exercise program to ensure that you are following all the rules, but keeping fit and active during pregnancy is totally doable! Hey, if a woman can finish the Chicago Marathon and then give birth a few hours later (happened just last week), I figure staying fit…

If the total distance is only 24,900 miles, and we are at 249.1 miles now (actually, 252.24 miles), we really only need to do 100 times more than we've done so far! I started the thread 18 days ago, and it only started up slowly. Will this take us 5.5 years? nahhhh. I think that as the thread gains momentum (I see a LOT of…

231 + 5.5 = 236.5 5.5 miles on the treadmill in the gym. Did a drill where I spent 45 seconds up on my toes simulating a sprint with higher knees and a full kick followed by 15 seconds regular running (mid sole strike), followed by a drop in speed and a 1 minute recovery run. After 10x that bit I was getting tired, but I…

There have been months where I haven't taken a rest day, a true rest day, and things feel fine. At first. Eventually though I just start to burn out. 1 day a week rest though and I feel more able to go out and go hard on the other days. It's more than just doing light exercise, it's the absence of exercise that gives you…

I'm not sure you get bonus miles, but you get the knowledge that you didn't have to pay for the shoes we were all running in ;) You know, a bunch of my friends have switched to minimalist and even barefoot running. I just haven't gotten the bug yet. S

203.6 + 6.45 = 210.05 10.37km today in what was supposed to be a Long Slow Run at a casual pace but which turned out to have a bit more oomph than expected. 100m elevation gain over the first 6km or so and then lost it all in 2km. S

180.11 + 4.59 = 184.7 Friday - 7.4km steady run with some hills. Staying mostly in zone 2 but trying to bounce it up for the hills. Run training has just started back up, it's sucking! lol.

I had no clue and had made up a bunch of possibilities. My conclusion was: Non solicited ... something or other. Couldn't come up with a V. Nice to know what it actually means. I fit into my old shorts today, haven't been able to wear them all summer. It's fall now and I won't wear them again until the spring probably, but…

What a great success story. Way to kick *kitten* and take names! Congratulations on your journey. You are now the inspiration for many others!

Is an average HR of 151 high for you though and indicative of a lot of exertion? Regardless of speed and distance, if you had to work hard to get your body to cover the ground you are going to have burned more calories than someone else for whom that distance and speed would not cause exertion. Did it feel like you were…
