You will find lots of people here who are on the same road as you. If you find you have questions there are always lots of good suggestions. Good luck

This is a GREAT thread! I learned my lesson a few weeks ago when I hit a temporary plateau and I thought I could lose quicker by restricting more! I ended up feeling rotton and the scale never moved..... Now I don't stress if I eat up my allowance but equally, if I am not hungry, I won't eat all my exercise calories. My…

Choose a lean cut and don't eat to much of it. Most of it is raised naturally (on grass) so it is healthier than many red meats!

I see you have lost 9 kg - that is impressive weight loss:smile: . How long did it take you? Sometimes losing a lot of weight very quickly (or even a sudden drastic change in lifestyle) can trigger something called telogen effluvium (it can also result in hair loss after a variety of other triggers varying from childbirth…

Try some other exercise databases. I wanted to know how much energy I used moving and stacking hay bales this summer (we have horses and put up some of our own hay). I was able to find that information elsewhere by googling it. If you can't find it, I think the suggestion about using a heart rate monitor is a good one

There are no hard and fast rules. I do both depending on circumstances. However, when temptation strikes, there is nothing like calculating the calories you are thinking of consuming to make you think again! I never log exercise until it is completed.....

That is great! You are an inspiration to us all.

Try a whole foods store or the whole food section of your local grocery or supermarket.

One day at a time and one pound at a time! It takes time but it is amazing how it all adds up. This is a great community!

Well done! There are always going to be bumps in the road but the great thing is not to lose your direction. MFP is a wonderful resource to keep you motivated.

If you eat fruit, it is very hard (my dietician friend says impossible) to stick to the sugar restriction on this plan. Myself, I just continue to eat fruit  but I would not want to bump up the sugar with refined carbs!

Swimming, water exercises and water walking would be ideal if you have access to a pool. The elliptical machine tends to be well tolerated and cycling on a machine or on a bike may work for you too. Remember to start slow and increase gradually whatever type of exercise you are doing. As your weight loss progresses, you…

Many congratulations! You deserve bells and whistles!

Thanks for the link! I am in a slow weightloss phase despite iincreasing exercise and restricting intake. I was wondering about trying this (though did not know that it was a recognised strategy) It seemed to make sense to keep my body guessing!

I remember this problem from my postgraduate days. I gained a LOT of weight analysing results and typing my thesis. I seemed to need a coffee or cup of tea very frequently and all that caffeine upset my stomach so I ended up eating more..... Yes an exercise partner would help. What about the other postgrads? I bet you are…

Nothing in this world works for everyone but MFP certainly works for me! It was a chore to chart food and excercise before but thanks to the app, I now do it daily and it gets easier the more you do it. I am gradually working my way down to a healthy weight - I am 16 months into my journey but when I get there, I will have…

Very well said. There are going to be bumps in the road on every journey but that does not mean that we have to give up traveling!

Sounds like you have really answered your own question - you do need to learn the middle road. Are you an emotional eater? Some folks fall off the wagon and have a junk food meal and then feel such self disgust that they top it off with a brownie binge and a quart of ice cream. Finding out what is triggering your responses…

I made some a few weeks ago with a stuffing composed of a mixture of brown rice and lentils, onions sauteed in a little olive oil and a dash of curry paste , diced tomatoes and fresh basil plus lite salt and fresh ground black pepper. The recipe calculator in "tools" is a good resource for homemade recipes!

Restricting intake too much risks going into "famine mode". What you are doing seems entirely logical. Personally I never consume less than my base intake but unless I am really, really hungry, I don't eat all my exercise calories. It has taken me over a year to get where I am now but I am still losing weight and have…

That is so true! If I really crave something, I eat it (but not to excess). Portion control is the secret for me. I do try to eat healthy most (95% plus) of the time but I look on the exercise and food things I am currently doing as lifestyle changes that I will need to maintain for the rest of my life. A little of what…

Thanks for starting this discussion. I was looking for a new bathroom scale (preferably one that does not weigh about 7 lbs lighter than the one in my doctor's office!)

I think it probably varies from person to person and even day to day for an individual. Not a particularly helpful reply, I know. Personally I eat some of my exercise calories but usually not all of them. I am trying to learn to recognise my body's signals so I try to eat when I am hungry (as in Paul McKenna's plan) so I…

I made your recipe this morning! It is great. Do you have it entered in the food database?

Despite everything you have still lost about 5lbs in the past month. Not bad! Hang in there! The weight did not come off smoothly but I think a lot of us have that problem. I certainly do. I will plateau for 2 to 3 weeks and then drop several pounds at once. Not sure why, though water retention and hormonal issues…

If your weightloss is slowing or stopping despite all that exercise and sticking to the intake guidelines then you probably do need to consume more Calories. However, a negative balance is not necessarily a bad thing. If it is not severe enough to send your body into famine mode, it should result in increased weight loss.…

 Yes there is hope. You have obviously already made the decision to lose weight. You have joined this site! You have posted on a board that has a lot of folks who have been there and are doing that. That is three positives in your favour already:happy: The biggest and hardest step is usually the first one on the…

It is very hard to beat fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and home cooked vegetables (without salt, or with Morton's lite salt). So many commercial and highly processed foods seem to have oceans of salt in them.

See if your local pool or fitness center offers any Water Aerobics or exercise classes. Here is a slide show from Mayo Clinic on water exercises www.mayoclinic.com/health/aquatic-exercise/SM00055
