I'm a PhD student finishing up my dissertation, so I can relate. I'm not teaching this semester, but I've replaced that with my job search, so I understand the stress. Feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like the support. I've been doing this for about a year and a half now and I'm down to my goal weight and now…

Ha ha, me too! I have a lab and a border collie mix. It's definitely exercise in my book just trying to keep up with them!

I have an Etsy shop with original paintings, prints, note cards and post cards. Here's the link: http://www.etsy.com/shop/RebeccaLeighFineArt Also, check out my favorites for other great items and shops!

For gifts and special occasions, I really like the Tazo teas. The China Green Tips is delicious, and the other ones I've had I really like too.

That's a great site... thank you!
-
Thanks! I may start off there and invest in all the expensive stuff later if I decide that I like it. I do find that I do better when I have someone guiding me though, which is why I thought a DVD would be helpful.

Thanks, that would be great! I really appreciate it.

I like Jeffrey Scott's Integrated Strength Training. It's a great strength addition to my mostly cardio workouts. The most movement you do is squats, and girl, there are a LOT of squats! But there's no jumping around or anything. Good luck!

I agree. Seriously, I don't know how you work out that much and only eat 1200 calories, or a few more. I love to work out because that means I get to eat more calories. Sometimes that's the only thing that gets me through the day. So yes, like the previous posters have said, listen to your body and eat if you're hungry. :)

Wow, 28 lbs in 85 days! Your weight loss and your life choices are impressive. Keep up the great work!
-
what an amazing difference! keep up the great work!
-
Also, if you're super new to this, you might just try recording what you eat for a few days, without worrying about the numbers. Then you can get an idea of where you need to go and not feel overwhelmed, and make gradual changes.

What about hiking? It's a great workout, it takes up time, and you could even get some like minded friends together, hike for the day, and then make some healthy dinner. I always find that social things with people who are also trying to be healthy are the best way to pass the time when I don't know what to do.

When biking I usually just nod when they tell me they're going to pass me on the left and move a little bit farther to the right. I didn't know runners did that too. I guess I don't usually run in big groups.

Oatmeal, or granola and yogurt, and then a mid morning snack or a super early lunch usually. You body needs to refuel that often.

air popped popcorn!

I found that adding more strength training pushed me past the plateau and finally down to my goal weight. Hang in there, you can do it!

I think you're arguing just to argue. We're all saying the same thing.
-
They're not. But only eating those things is quite unhealthy. I think that's what we're getting at... moderation, balance.
-
In the short run, yes, it's true, but in the long run, your body prefers to run on "good" calories and not bad ones. Mine gets mad at me when I have the "bad" ones now, so I end up eating veggies and whole grains most of the time anyway. :)
-
Heck no, wine isn't bad for you! Just drink in moderation and plan your calories accordingly - ie. work out a little harder so you can have a glass and stay in your calories. :) Enjoy!

Do you have an iPhone? There is a great app called "Nike Trainer" that has 30- and 45- minute workouts with little to no equipment that you can do anywhere. I love it for when I'm out of town because I can just plug it and it guides me through.

Spanish, English, Portuguese, Quechua

Learning Spanish has to do very little with actually learning the language. It's about application, critical thinking, and openness to other cultures. You need all of those to be an engineer. PLUS, many studies have proven that second language learners do overall better in every other subject in school. It's not a…

Also, do they have to do translation and memorization? I think the other posters bring up a valid point... learning styles are very diverse, especially with foreign languages. Memorization worked for me, but it rarely works with any of my students these days. And direct translation is, no offense, quite useless.…

Yes, I agree to the previous post. I used to teach high school, and now I teach university level - Spanish also. Scare the crap out of them. Call their parents. Make sure they know that this is serious. A bad grade will bring down their average, and they won't get into the college they want or they won't do well once they…

If you're hungry all the time, exercise more so you can eat more! Even just a walk in the evening helps me have that extra piece of bread or chocolate that I want at the end of the day. Also, drinks LOTS of water. And keep at it... you'll get there! It took me over a month for the scale to move at all when I started!

My pet peeve - closed groups. Why post it in an open forum if it's closed. I wouldn't want to join the group anyway, but it makes me feel like I'm back in high school.

I had it done about 6 years ago, before I started grad school. I'm 30 now, and just had to get a pair of reading glasses last year, but with all the reading I do, it's pretty much expected. I've had friends' doctors tell them to wait until they finish grad school so they don't have to read as much. I say go ahead and get…

Exercise more on the days you want a couple of drinks. I just went on a bike ride so I can have some drinks with dinner tonight. It's all about planning!
