Rule #1 - Running is for you and you only. Do not waste time wondering what other people are thinking because I don't know anyone yet that can truly read minds! Find a race in your area and go watch it from the finish line. You will see the people receiving the biggest cheers are the ones finishing in the back of the pack,…

I use moleskin myself. As far as the calluses go, I use a pumice stone to control them. I allows me to keep them from getting too thick without losing the protection they provide.

Lots of good info already posted. Have your gait analyzed and get the right shoes, don't heel strike, ice your knees, etc. Some words of advice for your training volumes. We each have to judge our ability to increase volume and type of exercise and do so gradually to avoid injury. Some of us are more prone to injury than…

^^^^^^^Speaking of awesome abs..... thanks for the support Sara. I figure if I do enough of these races there will come a day when my stomach starts to look at least almost as killer as yours!!!!

Aaaaaahhhhh. It's not how I wrote it, it's how you READ it!!!

You rock, my friend! I'll trade accomplishments back and forth with you any day!

Carson knows what he is talking about, so I'm glad you are listening to him! Only a couple of things I would add. Another way to think of your foot strike is to try to land lightly on your forefoot. Heel striking will kill your knees going downhill and is what happens if you extend your foot out in front of your torso. If…

A good time is what you are capable of, not what everyone else's times are. Race calculators are designed for you to set reasonable expectations of your time based on what you are currently capable of. It basically works as a translator from one distance to another. Do not listen to idiots who tell you that you have to…

Yup. Listen to Carson. He knows what he is talking about.

My new bike arrives via UPS today. Can't wait to get it on the road! Training for my first try. Feel free to add.

If you haven't trained hydrating, don't start during the race unless you get thirsty. Something you might want to incorporate into your training going forward. Dehydration will slow you down. As far as pace groups, I would recommend starting with a group pace you have done comfortably, then start speeding up about half way…

That is NOT a NSV. It is a frickin' accomplishment! Congratulations on reaching a major milestone!

Outstanding. Congratulations!

Feel free to add me. Polar bear dash and a half marathon in the bag already this year!

Nice! :drinker:

Having read your post, I was going for lacking knowledge on weight lifting. Having read your replies, however, A, B, or C would seem to do. Cheers! :drinker:

I gotta be blunt on this one. I take it from your post that you are basically saying you want to gain muscle but you don't want to strength train and that the other forms of training you have tried do not accomplish what you want (to build muscle mass). That is a bit like saying I want to run a marathon but I don't want to…

I couldn't disagree more, though it is not exactly the way I lean. However, for the record, I am a registered organ donor.

Completely gone. My wife couldn't be happier. Along with the kids, dogs, neighbors....

Over time you will be amazed at how your body adapts. The key is to reach a goal, allow for some rest and recovery, then train and push through to the next distance, rinse and repeat! There are plenty of good training programs out there. I used Hal Higdon's plans all last year. I started running 13 months ago and ran my…

I would count that with a lot of extra zeros at the end!

You are waaaay too kind my friend!

What's the alternative? Are we supposed to just give up? I've had trainers at my gym tell me they wish they had my body. At 45 I'll take that as a yes!
