For me it depends. I don't have to be up until about 7am but I wake up naturally anywhere from 5:30-6:30 usually. I go to bed around 10:30 each night so I end up with 7-8 hours of sleep. I know I'm over-training or pushing too hard if I make it to the alarm, or have trouble getting up in the morning. I typically don't need…

New Moon Quarter Marathon this Saturday evening- it's supposed to be hot, humid, and hilly so I've been doing training runs in the afternoon to adapt. I'm looking forward to finishing it so I can go back to cool morning runs and start getting ready for my third full in October

Did the training run on the egg white delight go well? If so- eat that. :) Go with what works- nothing new on race day! (or for dinner the night before!)

I find that after transitioning to outside running from treadmill running, it takes me about a week and a half to feel like I'm fully "back". Granted I've only been running for 3 years, but each winter I tend to hibernate on the treadmill. The surfaces are different so it can take time for the legs to adjust- but to me…

Like arussell134 said- grab onto a mantra and every time a negative thought enters your head, say the mantra out loud. In other words- fake it 'till you make it. Some of my favorites to say out loud during training are: - "Every accomplishment begins with the decision to try" - "Can't stop, won't stop" - "I am in control…

Here's my one runner's opinion: I ran my first marathon after only one year of running. I had run before that, on and off, up to about 5k distance. I trained to half distance in the spring, and full distance in the fall, peaking at 40 mpw. I'll be honest. My first marathon sucked. I finished in 5:20 and it was the most…

Congrats on signing up! I'm sure you will do awesome. I'm not doing Vancouver in the spring, but I've done a couple fulls and plan to do 1 or 2 next year as well. I'm always looking for more running friends so I'll send you a FR :)

Does your local running store have a trainer? I'd call up the place you got fitted for your shoes and ask. I'm part of a running club that's run by our local store, and they have an athletic trainer that people can go see for free. Last time my foot was hurting I went in to see her, and she gave me some stretches I could…

I would think you'd be better off giving your body more of a chance to recover. I'd do something like 8, 12, 8 for long runs if I was in your situation.... but then again I've never done two marathons so close together. I doubt you'll lose any fitness in such a short time as long as you don't stop running all together for…

Finished second in my AG and 10th overall at a local quarter marathon (it still counts even if only like 100 ppl ran it)! Finished in 1:01.58, started the race not planning to push it since my FM was just 2 weeks ago, but realized I was doing well at the turnaround point and picked it up in the second half. SO WINDY and…

According to your 5k time of 25 minutes, you should be able to run about a 1:55 HM. That's at a pace of 8:42. Your 5k pace should not be your Long Run pace, and neither should your HM pace. Take goal HM pace and add 60-90 seconds. I would recommend running 10-10:30 minutes/mile for your Long Run pace, and doing a Tempo run…

Honor Our Heroes Quarter Marathon- 1:01.58; 2nd in AG and 10th overall female. I started the race at a casual pace, but at the turnaround point I counted and noticed I was the 12th female, and I could see two girls a catchable distance ahead. Finished with an avg. 9:29 pace. (1 min faster than the LR pace I was supposed to…

I've got a quarter marathon on Saturday, but running it as a "recovery fun run" from my marathon (Columbus) two weeks ago. The past couple of weeks I've been going out for 20-30 minute easy runs, so this will kick me back into gear to train for a 10k I hope to race in December.

My top 3: Wear something warm over your race outfit to the start. Even if you step out side and its not that chilly. Wear something warm anyway. Nothing worse than standing there freezing for an hour and wasting energy jumping around to try and keep warm! Don't go out too fast. Don't go out too fast. DO NOT go out too…

I just had my marathon on Sunday, and all last week I stopped logging, ate as much as I wanted, and made sure that I didn't skimp on the carbs. I made sure to drink plenty of water and electrolytes for two days beforehand as well, and my dinner was mostly carbs the night before the race. Other than that I didn't go crazy…

Columbus Marathon (my second full) Columbus, OH on 10/19/2014 Chip time: 4:50:55 Perfect even splits: 2:25:27, 2:25:28 PRd by half an hour Never hit the wall It was a great race- well organized, fantastic volunteers, well timed aid stations.

I'm not sure if caffeine improves my performance, but I am not willing to do without it long enough to find out :P

Yep :) I have my second full coming up in October!

Congrats on your 10k!!! I had a similar experience to you. I was trying to lose 15ish lbs for a couple of years and just yo-yo'd. I started taking running seriously last year and completely fell in love with it, then losing weight and tracking food became about fueling training. It's way more fun this way! I gained some…

Ran Cap City Half Marathon this morning at got a PR of 2:08.12! That shaves 7 minutes off of my half last fall. Ran negative splits, and my second half was a full 8 minutes faster than my first half. I might have gone out TOO conservatively. The results online say I passed 1,243 people and was only passed by 11 people the…

Thanks for the replies everyone! I think I'll rest most of the week but try to get one or two runs in. I'd hate for my legs to be too tight. But you're right, those extra few miles won't make any difference.

I don't lift, I just run, and since January of this year I've gone from 29% BF to 21% BF and lost 3.5 inches on my waist, 3 inches from my hips, and 2.5 inches on each thigh. I also ate at a very slight deficit so that I wouldn't sacrifice much LBM (.4lb/week ish), but I'm sure I have lost some, and although my legs are…

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't; you are correct. If you are determined to finish this marathon, go out tomorrow and destroy that 18 mile run. Show it who's boss. Then follow your plan and go out next week and run 20. If you've made it this far and you want to finish, you will finish. If you don't think…

I've been running consistently for 3 years now, did a half and a full last year, had to take a month off after the full (I had the flu and ran it anyway, and it took me forever for my body to recover... oops) so started fresh when I started training for the half this spring. I didn't follow any training plan for the first…

Road ID is a form of identification you wear/ carry with you when you run so that if you were to, say, pass out in the middle of a trail; the medics would know who you were and would be able to access your medical history/ know who to contact/ etc. You can get an official thingy at roadid.com, or just carry something that…

I used to HAVE to have my Garmin with me, but now I've learn to let go a little bit and just enjoy some runs without worrying about perfect pacing. I like running with music on solo tempo runs, but have also learned to just enjoy being outside. The only thing I HAVE to have with me right now is my fitbit. I use it for…

My running partner swears by Spark. She's a nurse who works 12 hour shifts, so when she needs a bit of extra energy after lunch, she always uses Spark. I've never tried it (I have a severe coffee addiction, and see no need to get hooked on something else alongside it) but she has used it consistently for a couple of years…

Probably depends on your goals. Do you want strong/lean legs? Then yes. Do you want super muscular looking legs? Then maybe not. I like long distance running. I run about 30 mpw. Since I started counting calories again in January, I've lost 3 inches off each thigh. The only weight training I do is to assist my running. My…

I ran Chicago last year- enjoy it! The course is a blast, and the spectators/cheering squads are awesome!

Now I feel like the weirdo. I do every single run in Mizuno Wave Inspires. I've gone through 5-6 pairs over the last couple of years. I only run them to about 300-350 miles, but I use them for EVERYTHING. I have a weird foot/knee issue, so I guess once I found a pair that I could use pain-free I just never looked back.…
