Why shouldn't someone even smaller than you eat a little less?

Thanks I am not a biochemist so these arguments are a little over my head. However, I find when academics fight the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle. They make a name for themselves by having an extreme point of view. However, everything can not be evaluated in black and white, there are many grey areas in life.

Since you already posted the answer to this study, I wanted to highlight this article which explains why a low-carb diet can have a metabolic advantage. I thought it was an interesting read. "A calorie is a calorie" violates the second law of thermodynamics" Abstract The principle of "a calorie is a calorie," that weight…

You said: "I'm saying the baby is getting the calories it needs to grow from it's mother. The calories a fetus needs is only a small fraction of the mother's in-take." And I responded: "So why can't a muscle get the calories it needs to grow from its "father"? The calories that the muscle needs is only a small fraction of…

No...if you have an answer i'd like to hear it.

My point is that building muscle on a caloric deficit is scientifically possible (not ideal). Overweight people who lift tend not to have lifted for a long time (if ever) so these aren't really extreme cases. No one is suggesting that an experienced, normal weight lifter should try to gain mass while eating at a deficit.…

So why can't a muscle get the calories it needs to grow from its "father"? The calories that the muscle needs is only a small fraction of the father's intake.

Luckily the OP wasn't pregnant while trying to gain muscle on a deficit then.

My point is (to use your analogy) that fat cells are like having gas in the engine so building (be it babies or muscles) while on a caloric deficit does not violate any scientific law. Does this help you understand or do you need further clarification?

My BMR is between 1100 on this site and 1200 on others. I weigh 117 lbs and have my settings on sedentary. I don't want to lose much more weight so soon I will switch to maintenance soon plus exercise cals. I think BMR is lower as you get older as well.

I have known women who were overweight and were put on a weight loss diet (calorie deficit) during their pregnancy. They lost a substantial amount of weight while the fetus continued to grow to a healthy weight. Energy is stored in our fat cells, this is why growth, including muscular growth, is possible even while a…

I am 5'2" and when set to sedentary my maintenance is 1470.

p90x gets boring...on weight days you have to do the ab tape too so that means over an hour of working out to a video (the yoga video is 1.5 hours). I'd try body revolution and maybe add in some exercise outdoors like someone suggested.

My background is in law not medicine, but for us going to court should only be considered after all other means of resolving an issue have failed (even though going to court usually means more money for the lawyer). In medicine shouldn't it be the same? That is, a drug should usually only be prescribed after non-chemical…

When the weather warms up you could take the kids out one day a week and have an active rest day. Run around the park or go for a hike. Exercise, fresh air, and sunshine are good for kids too!

While I think that everyone has the ability to lose weight, I think that it is much harder for some people. Many of the "fit" people on this site have never been substantially overweight. I gained a lot of weight when I was pregnant and I lost it without watching my diet or exercising. I have friends who really struggled…

Depends...for example a fried egg already adds some calories for oil/butter so I don't add it.

I agree - lots of people on here are doing different types of diet/fitness programs but still use MFP for their own personal needs. I think having a place where you weigh in weekly is a good motivator if you enjoy the group.

Could also be your house/car - chronic exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide can cause these symptoms as well. Be sure to get to the bottom of whatever is making you sick. Hope you feel better.

waist: 26.5 pants: 4 height: 5'2" I'd be happy in a size 2-4. I find sizes vary so much between stores.

Try watching your portions and maybe getting an exercise video that you can do at home. Don't eat things you don't like. Also, don't worry about losing weight slowly - a pound a week is great.

I read a lot of teen fiction because I buy them for my sons. Divergent by Jennifer Ross is really good. Unwind by Neil Shusterman - creepy but really good. Matched by Allie Conden is supposed to be good Delirium by Lauren Oliver (these may be too girly for my kids but I might get them for me). Ashfall by Mike Mullen and…
