Not true. It's perfectly ok to run in chucks, as long as you build up. Our feet, knees, hips and backs are designed for being barefoot no matter what the activity. I run half marathons in vibrams so I don't think running in chucks is a problem, per se, but I don't think running 4 miles in them your first time out was a smart choice. I'd take a few days off and if it continues to hurt for a while, see a doctor.

Proper shoe sizing will prevent bruises/lost toe nails. I've run 7 half marathons and a 20k, plus various races of shorter distances and have never lost a toe nail. Now I run in vibrams and have STILL not lost a toe nail.
