I did hear of this, but I think they were on a next to nothing deficit and in some cases subjects did gain mass. The deficit lasted two years and it was like a 100-200 caloric deficit (Guessing because I cant remember every detail)....Anyways I did see a similar study ...hoping its the same one.

Lets take a fitness approach....would an athlete training for an event....Lets say Michael Phelps (or anyone you choose) be better eating a so called "clean diet" or would he just train eating a not so clean diet (fast food)? Just want to see everyones opinions:)

I love the forums were everyone has a PHD in exercise and in nutrition. OP I can not speak for your trainer, but I do say this. I recommend doing something lighter. Insanity is all cardio based, and has a very high intensity and duration. With the sports induced asthma, try something a little less intense for starting off, especially something within a DVD...Maybe P90 or something rather.
