  • Reduce carbs (sugar in particular). I will get a lot of hate for saying this. Oh well. People really need to stop blaming saturated fats. For those of you with an open mind here is a great video to watch. It is broken down into a few different ones. The doctor is a renown lipidologist, Thomas Dayspring and I am sure he…
  • Ketostixs are great at the beginning to test if you are in ketosis. However, to the newbies just starting out, once you get your body switched over to nutritional ketosis using them can be VERY inaccurate. Don't get discouraged and think you have been kicked out. Each body is different but after a few week (not exactly…
  • I don't get excited about veggies either. If you want to reduce carbs you should add more fat. It will make your meals a lot more palatable and enjoyable. It is a big mistake to reduce carbs and eat lean meat. Add some yummy fat to your veggies and you might find you eat more. Also find a high fat salad dressing to add to…
  • If you are doing keto you should read up on the diet. Atkins is a bit different although they are both lowcarb. Keto has some specific ratios. Also it has only been a couple weeks if I am reading your diary right. Give yourself a break! :) You can change your goals to only allow for 5% carbs which is the approx suggestion…
  • THIS! You need more sodium & potassium on a low carb diet. You should read "The art and science of low carbohydrate living". "The short answer is that the amount of carbohydrate in our diet changes our need for salt. High carbohydrate diets make the kidneys retain salt, whereas a low carbohydrate intake increases sodium…
  • There are a couple of great books like "Why We Get Fat" & "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" with sited studies that explain the benefits of the diet. Problem is that the naysayers that bug you about it, aren't likely to read them. If you haven't already I suggest that you read both books. If you feel…
  • Ask them why you need carbs? Most people have no clue about nutrition and how the body processes what we eat. Plus I am sure you do eat carbs. Explain to them how you get carbs in the form of veggies. How can anyone argue that? Are they going to say that you should eat sweets and stuff yourself with white flour? I doubt…
  • It promotes thermogenesis [burning of calories to produce heat]. Coconut oil improves sluggish thyroids by stimulating the production of extra thyroid hormones. Most other common oils, like vegetable (soy) and corn have been shown to inhibit thyroid function. I don't know if there have been any studies done .. but there…
  • If you plan on doing a plant-based diet you may want to look into what can suppress your thyroid function. Here is a link to goitrogenic food. That being said, if you cook a lot of these foods can help. It is worse in the raw form. Also INCREASE your saturated fat. I have some coconut oil everyday. Good luck with your diet…
  • Just curious about what your Naturopath has to say about goitrogens and how they suppress the function of the thyroid gland. It is unfortunate that most of the veggies I like seem to be in that category :( Cooking the veggies helps but I often wonder how much better it is and if I cooked them enough. One thing I do like is…
  • I think I am going to try to make this : http://thecerealbaker.blogspot.com/2011/05/chocolate-covered-pork-rinds.html I LOVE chocolate covered anything. Especially salty stuff like pretzels. I figure pork rinds should be a good keto substitute. Anyone else tried something crazy like this?
  • Our almond cookies are pretty calorie rich as well. About 161 per cookie. Worth it though :) 161 cal , 15g fat , 3 carbs, 2 fiber, 5g pro Here are the ingredients: Lindt 99% Dark Chocolate, 30 g (1 bar) Butter - Salted, 90 g Ground Almonds, 120 g Protein Factory - Whey Isolate- Vanilla, 0.65 scoop Ground Flax Seed, 10 g
  • The one I have is - Spectrum Organic Coconut Oil (Refined / Expeller pressed). It may seem expensive but it lasts a long time. A few grams goes a long way. Hope this helps.
  • It is great to cook with. I use it everyday in the morning for my eggs. It does not have a coconut taste. No sweet taste at all. I buy the organic jar from the bulk barn (Canada).
  • Add sugar free syrup or sweetener. Just remember that all low calorie sweeteners (including Splenda) do have carbs. ~ 0.5 - 1 carb per packet. Most liquid forms do not though (if you can get it). If you want to stay really low carb you can always just add cream to your coffee.
  • Hey if you want to friend me as well you can check out my food. My husband and I have been doing Keto since the end of Nov and we make every meal. I try and stay under 16g - 20g of carbs a day and I don't find it hard at all. I do need to add more veggies though. My husband made some dark chocolate almond flour cookies…
  • Typically the brake down is~ 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. Shooting for 20g or under is good. Some people find they can have more. There is no exact #'s with the diet. You will have to see how you feel.
  • Lost 1.6 pounds over the holidays! :) It was pretty easy for me though because we hosted the family this year. Makes a big difference when you can prepare what you are going to eat. As for New Years I don't really drink anyway, I am always the DD. lol
  • <---Wife LOVING keto. Yummy meals & weight loss? How can this be? :P
  • Taubes overweight? http://i.imgur.com/zCynO.jpg From last march I think. Doesn't appear that way to me.
  • Awesome book! Opened my eyes as well and I can't believe the weight loss and success from low carb. It boils down to doing whatever works for you. I have been doing keto (high fat, moderate protein, low carb) and I find it easy and I don't actually feel like I am dieting. Not everything works for everyone. If you don't see…
  • Don't know where you are getting your figures from but you are wrong. Americans now consume 19% more added sugar in their daily diet than they did in 1970, according to recent figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. • There is TONS of evidence that a low carb diet is healthy and safe. Check out Gary Taubes book -http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1820055.Good_Calories_Bad_Calories It is one of the most comprehensive and recent nutrition research books available.
  • Depends on what type of diet you are on and what you consider "healthy". I'm doing Keto and LOVING it. I have bacon and eggs everyday. Yummy!
