  • If you want to see a visual of what 25% looks like, take a look at this: http://www.leighpeele.com/body-fat-pictures-and-percentages Most calculators online are incredibly inaccurate. A DEXA scan can give you a much more accurate reading.
  • I am following keto. It works for me. I haven't read Zoe Harcombe's book yet. I don't need to read her book to know the statement is true. edit: plus I eat plenty of processed meat so I don't think I could follow her diet. I eat bacon daily. Hence my name.
  • People should stick with what works for them. I for one will take the FAT and PROTEIN please since they are the two nutritious macro nutrients (carbs just provide energy and we can get that from fat – eaten or stored). When I eat carbs they come in the form of veggies as much as possible. I skip fruit and grains. Empty…
  • I am doing Keto (LCHF) so I have mine set very high. I net about 20g of carbs and my fat is set to 140g.
  • Open your diary so you can get some help. You can't exercise your way to weight loss. No matter what anyone says! Diet is 80+% of the equation.
  • TONS of people work out doing low carb. It is suggested that you don't start a NEW workout program if you haven't worked out before when you first start a LCHF diet. That just makes good sense though. If you have been doing the diet for a few weeks and would like to add in some exercise go right ahead. Especially if you…
  • Thanks for the responses. I hate calorie restriction! lol How can you possibly know your BMR or your TDEE? It is all guess work. On top of all of that, I have hypothyroidism and that screws with it as well. I hate having to experiment and see weight gains in the process. At least with Keto it isn't as bad. I recently…
  • Heads up ... if you decide you are going to do low carb then give it some time. Most people report feeling crappy for the first few days - weeks. You need to give it a fair shake. Two days of feeling crappy won't give you a true feeling of how it will be. I am doing the Ketogenic diet (LCHF) and I can tell you I felt…
  • If you have only been eating 1200 a day you should increase your calories gradually. Add ~ 200 for a week or two see how that goes and add more until you reach 1800 or until you are satisfied. There isn't a magic number that can be given to everyone. Try self experimentation by adding calories slowly.
  • <-- Drinks diet pepsi daily, sugar free syrups in my coffee and Poweraid Zero.
  • I drink min 4 diet pepsi a day. I also have sugar free syrups that I add to coffee and I drink PowerAid Zero. I have no issues with losing weight because of it.
  • I am not debating whether or not exercise is good. I AGREE! I do it :) I am answering the OPs question. Which is a resounding YES! As for the study here are some more references: Benardot, D., Thompson, W.R. “Energy from Food for Physical Activity: Enough and on Time.” ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal. 1999, July/August;…
  • I agree with the above posters. Eat fat! Don't buy into the bad information out there. Fat is important in your diet when low carbing. Here are just a few ideas of food to eat, they are meatless but not low fat: almond meal/flour (you can made all sorts of stuff) coconut flour nuts cheese (Full fat) eggs protein powder…
  • Even if you have more lean mass it isn't going to help you that much. If you were to say convert 10 lb. of fat to muscle — a major achievement — you would be able to eat only an extra 40 calories per day, about the amount in a teaspoon of butter, before beginning to gain weight. A pound of muscle burns approximately six…
  • Not sure where you came up with this ("I disagree with you that you lose fat when you don't exercise."). Could you cite some studies on this please. It is ridiculous to say that someone losing weight with diet only will not lose any fat but will lose muscle. It makes no sense at all. Of course some of the weight they lose…
  • "Have you had your thyroid tested? Or been tested for PCOS? Are you on hormonal birth control? Basically anything affecting your hormones could be a problem." Yup - I have hypothyroidism. Started meds back in October and my #'s are where they should be now. I also take BC. Can't do much about either of those. :( Thanks…
  • You can disagree but that doesn't change the fact that you can lose weight (FAT) without exercising. Change in your diet is all one needs for weight loss. I wasn't going into what is BEST for the body or why one should exercise. I agree it is great and I do it but not for weight loss.
  • Huh? "You will lose weight but not body fat?" Nonsense! You could do NO exercise and lose weight. That being said, it is good to exercise but not at all necessary to lose weight.
  • I am doing keto as well. I am set to 5% carb, 70% fat and 25% protein. I seem to go over on protein by a few grams each day but I am ok with that.
  • Totally depends on what you want. This forum has people doing low carb but that varies quite a bit. What diet are you following? I am doing keto. I have my ratios set at 5% carbs, 70% fat and 25% protein. I average about ~ 1500 calories a day.
  • I think you will find a combination of both. That being said, changing your diet is what will aid you in weight loss. Exercising can help with building muscle and improving cardiovascular function, but if you don't change your diet then you probably won't see much success. I used to go to the gym to do cardio daily and…
  • The BEST party food of all time - Jalapenos poppers. 3 easy ingredients: Jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese then wrapped in BACON ... Enjoy! Everyone will love them.
  • If you are following HFLC diet then you are probably experiencing the keto flu. It will pass. Drink LOTS of water. When I first started back in November I had 48 hours of feeling like utter crap. It was horrible to tell you the truth. Then on the 3rd day I felt great. Keep hydrated and add some sodium to your diet (THIS…
  • #1 - She is not a doctor. She is a dietitian. You should see your doctor. He could do some blood work on you and could better advise you what is safe. Dietitians are trained with the old conventional wisdom when it comes to dieting. The 130 carbs a day is totally arbitrary. There is no science behind that #. Best to get…
  • I am set at ~ 1500 calories. I tend to go over a bit though. I net 20g carbs. I am doing keto so my fat is about 65 - 75% (125g) and the rest is protein (75g).
  • I am the same height and weight as you. I am sure I have more body fat though. For a comparison, I lift 3 times a week. I squat 155lbs, dead lift 165lbs & bench 80 lbs (all 5-6 reps). If you want to lift heavy reduce the reps and add more weight. It will take time just go slow and continue to add weight.
  • Use to play WOW and quit when back, quit went back. I seem to do that every year or so. LOL Also played Warhammer Online & Eve. Nothing right now. Waiting for Guild Wars 2. Add me if you like.
  • Just want to start out by saying that Keto is not the only way to go, but I personally feel it is superior to other diets. I don't mean to knock what you are doing .... but it does not seem like Keto at all. Eating bread and choosing low fat foods is kinda the opposite of the diet. Of course there are some low carb breads…
  • I have similar issues. I am hypo and cold all the time. I have done the opposite though. I am doing a ketogenic diet and I have increased my calories. I lift weights 3 times a week (no cardio) and I have slowly upped my calories to 1500. I am feeling a LOT better. I think I will increase them a bit more actually. I was in…
