I do the same by wearing my HRM. My treadmill usually estimates I have burned 80 more calories that my HRM.

I started running using the running room system. You run 1 minute walk 1 minute. Do this 4 times in a week. The second week you move to 2 mins running 1 min walking. I'm a Saucony fan myself. I do suggest that you pick up a pair specific to your foot and stride. You could end up with knee injuries if you don't. Running shoes are not something you want to just pick any old pair - it's important that you get a good pair.
