  • I just completed this about 3 weeks ago and ran my first 5k race 2 weeks ago. It's a great plan! I was surprised how similar in concept it was on the 0to1650 (0 to 1 mile) for swimming. I guess I shouldn't have been, I imagine building up endurance is probably much the same regardless of the sport :). If I remember right,…
  • Sort of (how's that for an answer!) If I'm going to use the gym equipment, then no shower (elliptical, weights, running track, etc...) but I do put on deodorant to avoid being overly funky. I shower after my workout. If I'm going to swim that morning then I do. So yes, when I swim, I shower before and after swimming. The…
  • I was a Granny Smith or Golden Delicious fan, but I recently discovered Opal apples. Wow are they good. They're this odd yellow color, and they're a mix of the Topaz and Golden Delicious. Similar to Golden Delicious in terms of crispy, but much more flavor.
  • I just swam my first 2 mile today (3300 yards - it still counts :) ) - 1 hour 27 minutes. I was pretty happy that I was able to make it, I just did one long swim, all crawl, only 1 break for about a minute or so at the hour mark. Things began to cramp a little at the end, but nothing unusual.
  • Great work! I just got into work and had to post :) - I made it, with 7 seconds to spare (2350 in 1 hour). Not only that, but I had energy left so I kept going and ultimately swam 66 laps (2 swimmer's miles) in 1 hour 27 minutes - a personal best for most yards swam in a day (2350 would have been that record)! I'll…
  • I'm currently not quite there, about 7% over the beginning of the month. I'm going to try to push for it on Friday and see if I can still eek it in before the end of the month :).
  • Now 1 week in :) - I only had time for my standard 2000 yds today, but I was down to about 55 minutes, so extrapolating to an hour that's ~200 yards more or 2200 total in an hour. Or to add even more math that's 100/250 or 40% there! That last 60% will be hard, but I suspect I'll "cheat" near the end of the month and just…
  • Married at 23, first kid at 25, 2nd at 27, still happily together at 31. I'll admit, I'm not expert and by the time 40 rolls around things could change - but these ages felt right to me. Looking back, they still look like the right choices. There's tons of good and bad advice out there on being married at any age, so I…
  • I'm game - that's what I'm doing right now anyway. I'm trying to fit more laps into an hour. Currently I can do 2100 yds in an hour, so I'll aim to get to ~2350yds by the end of March in the same hour.
  • I've been struggling with the same problem. Being an engineer, it bothers me quite a bit that I can't "measure" how many calories I'm burning - my type-A personality can't handle this unknown when it affects my goals. I'm a bit slower than you - but I bet I'm less efficient (hence burning lots more calories to do the same…
  • Hmm, I guess I always consider a "Swimmer's Mile" - 1650 yards - which is 1.5km but technically short of a true mile (33 laps). So when I get asked "how far did you swim today?" I use swimmer's miles as the basis - gives me a little bit more :). I read somewhere where "Swimmer's Mile" came from, but I can't recall off-hand…
  • I followed the 0 to 1650 in 6 weeks program from Ruth Kazez - and it took 6 weeks (great program!). I was extremely surprised that I could do couch to a mile (swimmers :) ) in 6 weeks - I started more out of curiosity (or some joke on myself) that expecting to succeed. I'm by no means fast - I'm usually the slowest in the…
  • Hi, I'm new to MFP (about a month now) and I'm a 4X week swimmer. I swim because I can't really tolerate other forms of exercise (I'm a couch potato :) ). I know that sounds bad, but I enjoy swimming, I don't enjoy elliptical machines or weights. I never was a really good swimmer - although I did learn as a kid. Now it's…
  • I think the old fashioned scales you see in dr. offices and gyms (with the sliders on top) are the most accurate. Other than zeroing them out (which I check every time I use the one at the gym) there doesn't really seem much that can go wrong with them (usually on the top, there's a screw on the left side with a weight).…
  • I joined a gym just last December - nothing to do with a "resolution" - just coincidental timing. I only swim - no bikes/treadmills/etc for me but there is still etiquette, probably things I'm still messing up :). Maybe I'm weird, but if I'm doing something that grosses someone else out, I'd prefer they tell me. That way I…
  • I'm new to the site, but I just enter things as soon as I can after I consume (might be minutes, might be hours). I can't say as I spend any time considering the order they're entered for a particular meal. Maybe I'm missing the whole point - but I just look at "the bottom line" (calories remaining today). Generally,…
