  • You're still weighing. Do as others suggest and have one serving = one ounce or something like that. Then weigh each serving. No need to weigh the casserole dish separately, then with food, etc. However, if you want to take the time do it that way, go right ahead. You should know, though, that it doesn't matter how precise…
  • I use Happy Scale. Overall I like it, but sometimes I find the estimated date depressing. Although sometimes it serves as an incentive-- I want to prove to Happy Scale that I am faster than it thinks I am! So I beat the estimate of my mini goal (160) by a month. As you enter weights, the estimated finish date is revised.…
  • It's true he'd be able to see swelling and that kind of thing, but you can't tell how well a thyroid gland is functioning by just looking at someone's neck. He probably just thinks there is nothing wrong since it sounds like you don't have any other health issues-- thyroid dysfunction usually has a number of symptoms.…
  • Several years ago I lost 65 pounds. I ended up gaining back 36. I started losing again last year. So far I have lost 26 pounds. It's been slow, but I don't know if it's been slower than it was the first time. I plateaued at the same place I did before-- 170-- which I think is sort of interesting. I've taken some "breaks"…
  • Why is everyone weighing casseroles? Just weigh and measure all the ingredients in the recipe, then use My Fitness Pal's recipe function. If you end up eating three servings when you have the recipe set for four, just edit the recipe. Or enter 1.3 servings in your diary.
  • Like everyone else said, it depends on the individual. I have to lose like 40 pounds before I have a change in that area. I also don't gain in that area at the beginning, either. However, some people gain and lose quickly in that area. Were your boobs always good sized, or did they get much larger as you gained weight? I…
  • I am generally very good at eyeballing portion sizes after working in restaurants for several years. (I have tested myself.) However, weights of fruits and vegetables vary a lot, and I never had to pay much attention to the sizes/weights of those in restaurants, just on how much volume I needed for the recipe, so I need to…
  • I spend an embarrassing amount of money on fitness. My gym membership is around $140 / month, and I spend around $75 / month for iyengar yoga classes and another $140 on pilates equipment classes. I'm thinking of joining my local community center (which I can walk to) as well so I can do weights on Sundays when I don't…
  • It's like a scale you might use for body, but smaller and more sensitive. They only work for lightweight items, like less than five pounds. So you can tell if your potato weighs 100 grams or 150 grams. They are good to have even if you don't care about using them for calorie control. They are very helpful for baking in…
  • I've been using it since the fall of 2008. I LOVE it. I had had lots of problems due to natural monthly hormonal fluctuations (I am very sensitive) and bc pills made things worse. I went to new a gyn who suggested NuvaRing. I was very skeptical, but tried it anyway because he was so confident it would help me. There was a…
  • I agree. There are lots of people who have sugar levels higher than they should be, but are not diabetic (e.g., pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome). Also, by the time you're diagnosed you might have already done some very serious damage to yourself. Most people cannot tell when blood sugar has gotten out of control until…
  • Congratulations on your weight loss. Your story and the accompanying pictures are very inspirational. I hope you never have to sit out of activities with your children again. I especially love this line. It is so true, and directly and concisely attacks the procrastinating, negative attitude that so many people have. It…
  • I love this line. It's so true, and directly attacks the mentality that so many people have. I enjoyed your story and the pictures. I hope you never have to sit out of activities with your children again. Thank you for sharing.
  • After a few days of normal eating, you should start to see the weight gradually go down. If your weight is still up after more than a week of normal eating, then there's a gain.
  • Levi's curvy jeans. I like the "bold curve" cut, but they have another cut that is even curvier. I also like Ann Taylor Lift curvy jeans, but the legs are slimmer than the Levi's, so you may prefer the Levi's. I have never had luck getting jeans taken in at the waist, and I used an excellent tailor who has altered lots of…
  • I included that line because I did not always work in the plus size department. I usually worked in the "misses" department. I don't have a knack for offending at all. There are some overly sensitive people in this thread. The first one was angry because I pointed out something that was in her public profile which…
  • A lot of people like Turbo Fire and Zumba. I have not used the DVDs, so I can't recommend specific titles. I do love my live Zumba classes. I really like Christi Taylor's videos. They are pretty dancey and have fun music. My favorite one is Totally Hot Cardio. It's old, though, so you might think it is old fashioned. Go to…
  • Sure. Some people don't like the teacher or the class, have trouble keeping up, or just need to leave early to do something else. Not many people leave early, but it happens and is no big deal.
  • Your profile says how much you have to lose. There was zero conjecture on my part. Regarding "fatter than you are," perhaps I should have phrased that better. What I meant was, that type of dress would be very unflattering on you. Anyone who has a belly, even a very tiny one, will look fat in a loose, flowy dress. Trying…
  • Exactly. It's funny how so many people on MFP scream about correlation not being the same as causation when someone posts a study on sugar being linked to a poor health outcome, or some other such thing, but when it comes to being overweight they suddenly believe that correlation = causation? There are plenty of healthy…
  • For some people that's one of the last areas to go. There's no way of knowing where fat loss is going to come off your body. Surely you lost inches elsewhere?
  • I like a lot of Denise Austin's videos, but some people don't like her voice. Check your local public library. They probably have videos you can borrow. That way you can try them first before buying. And if your branch doesn't have something you want, you can request it from another branch and it will be sent there to pick…
  • The black box warning is for the Wellbutrin. I think all anti-depressants have that warning because their use has been correlated with suicidal thoughts. (This happened to me on Celexa.)
  • Those are pretty good, too. The best flavor by far is the cinnamon flavor which is unfortunately almost impossible to find these days.
  • I don't think anyone will notice or think anything about it. Most people are concentrating on their own work-outs. Of those who do notice your size, sure there might be someone who thinks something mean, but there are probably just as many who are silently encouraging you. Maybe start slowly by going at times of day that…
  • When I lost 65 pounds back in 2008-2009, the first 45 went by pretty quickly with hardly any effort and took about six months. Then I plateaued at 170 and stayed there for a long time. Then I got to losing again and went from 170 to 150 in about six months. 160 to 150 was quicker than 170 to 160, maybe because I was so…
  • The article says obesity is unhealthy, but does not say that being overweight and staying that way is unhealthy. Just don't move from overweight to obese. I'd say even within the normal weight range it is not healthy to put on extra weight as an adult unless it is from muscle gains.
  • I like the Kind bars. My favorite by far is the dark chocolate with sea salt, but I also like the nut delight, the cinnamon chocolate pecan, and the chile chocolate. They're not super high in protein, but they are tasty, low sugar, have a good texture, and seem like real food to me. Protein bars sort of gross me out.
  • Ham is usually high in sodium. Sodium causes water weight gain. So that is probably your problem. Don't worry about fluctuations, look at the bigger picture. You can lose weight and still eat ham regularly. You and your wife should eat more than 1000 calories a day. 1500 would be healthier and more sustainable.
