I added another 2 miles to my run today. Now, I'm only 6 miles behind schedule.

This makes a lot of sense to me. My favorite race so far was my half last spring. I probably could have gone a little faster. I'll do 5ks, too, because I can put up with pain for a little while. The thought of really racing a 10K is scarier to me doing an ultra.

If you're looking for a good resource on running, I recently read Daniel's Running Formula, and got a lot out of it. He goes into a lot of detail about what physiological benefits you get out of different training intensities. He also has lots of training plans, from beginner up through advanced and plans for all kinds of…

I didn't train enough for my first ultra. I had a base of around 30 miles per week and peaked at just over 50 a few weeks out. I had 7 long runs over 3 hours, 3 of which were over 5 hours, but they were almost 50% of my weekly mileage. Basically, I was just training to finish, and that's what I did. If you run a lot…

I've got Vibram KMD Sport and Altra Instinct 1.5
-
I would fall off and die!
-
I'm sure that's fair. Still, I likely gained more than I would have being sedentary, right? (I've never used any sort of accurate bf% measurement, so it's all a guess anyway)
-
Full disclosure: my longest training run last year was only 5.5 hours, and I wasn't sore the next day.

Yeah, I saw that, but two people have already responded to me saying that I didn't build muscle while running hills for hours on a caloric surplus while gaining weight. It's not like a claimed a huge gain. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if it was less than two pounds of muscle. A glance down at my belly convinces me…

First, I would like to say that I agree with everyone saying that the OP gained water weight. I've personally fluctuated more than 15 pounds in a single day. At the same time, anyone who thinks you can't build muscle doing "cardio" should come with me on a 6 hour trail run! I guarantee you'll feel that in your muscles the…

I mostly agree with you, but I can do it with just over an hour of easy running, and I seriously doubt I'm in the top 5% of MFP fitness-wise. I think being somewhat fit and 50 pounds overweight is my secret.

In for 125, done 6 so far!
-
I just got the new Lucius record.
-
Great work!
-
Only 20 for the week, but that puts me over 100 for the month! This is the first time I've made my goal on one of these spreadsheets. I guess I'll have to up it to 125 next month!

Definitely get a pull-up bar, as pull-ups are great for the abs (so are push-ups). The most intense ab workout I've ever gotten was the first step in this progression toward a front lever: http://www.dragondoor.com/articles/building-an-olympic-body-through-bodyweight-conditioning/default.aspx

Great job! That's a huge PR!

I think obsessing over anything is probably a bad idea, but which direction to think about it seems like it might be subjective. For me, a naturally long-striding heel striker, speeding up my cadence forced me to shorten my stride and land with my feet moving behind me. This improved my running a lot. Reading Chi Running…

I think it's doable for you if you manage your expectations. I ran my first ultra (40 mile, trail) last year on less running than you've done (2.5 years of <2 miles/week, 1.5 years of 20-50 miles/week, and only one marathon). If your goal is just to finish, then it can be a positive (though quite painful) experience. I…

So, what would you be burning instead of glycogen?
-
Great result for those conditions!

I haven't actually tried 180 yet. After I read Chi Running, I switched to 170 and it took a while. At first, I just couldn't move my feet that fast at any speed, but it was hardest at slow speeds. I made a mix tape of songs that were all that tempo and that helped a lot. It made me think of running more like dancing. Now,…

For me, the relationship with food is definitely the issue. I ran 1200 miles last year and gained 40 pounds. Any error in calculation will be magnified once you start trying to eat back long runs. Last time I tried a TDEE approach, I didn't stick with it. The main thing for me is trying to figure out how to compensate for…

You may have this backwards. At 200 pounds, I am not "morbidly obese," but I do have the fitness to run nearly 8 miles in an hour, which should burn around 1000 calories. Even a nice 6 mile jog (54-57 minutes) should get me at least 750.

According to Google, Mo Farah weighs 143 pounds and he's broken 27 minutes. I've certainly seen men taller than him run that fast. I'm not sure what you're sayin'.

I love my Injinjis, but I just got a pair of Experias that are working out very well.
-
I would love more ultra- and trail-running friends! I ran my first ultra in October (40 miles, single track trail). I'm going to decide this summer whether I have the time to train for a 50-miler in December.

You could carry a small, electronic metronome or get a metronome app for your phone. The beeping (or whatever) will be annoying, but you shouldn't have to use it for very long to get an idea.

Totally off-topic, but, as someone who's spent a good deal of time "in the wild," I'm going to have to disagree with this. Large portions of the human population still live "in the wild." Persistence hunting is an actual fact. Avoiding predation isn't as big of an issue as you might think, and is more about observation…

I would second this. If you want to be able to run 90 minutes, you should consider increasing how much you run on a weekly basis (gradually). Once you're running 30 to 40 miles per week, 90 minutes shouldn't be a problem.
