Definitely watch your iron levels - supplement if you can. I've been veggie for about 5 years now and until the past year I wasn't getting enough iron, to the point that I needed a blood transfusion! But everything's fine now that I supplement. Mini-wheats are super-high in iron - you can get 90% of what you need per day…

Tai Chi can be very helpful for people who've had strokes. There is even a health recovery version of the tai chi set that can be done while seated. The Taoist Tai Chi society offers classes many countries in the world - if you are interested to see if there's one near you, here is the link:…

Yes :) It's good to log everything, because everything adds up!

I have flat feet too and the running shoe store people helped me get a pair that had proper stability and arch support. That sure helps. There are some shin warm ups you can do too, to help minimize the shin splints - a simple one is to trace the letters of the alphabet twice through with each foot. The coolrunning.com…

You already have the strength in you to 'do' and not 'wish'! :) Even if all you do is log your food to become more aware of what you're eating and the choices you're making, you are moving towards your goal of doing things differently. Or start by increasing your water intake, even if you make no other changes. So I guess…

Yukon gold potatoes are some of the best tasting potatoes out there! They are delicious mashed with a little skim milk and margarine, with a dash of nutmeg. If you don't want to mash them, just steam or boil them and a tsp of margarine or butter with some pepper or garlic makes a very tasty and satisfying meal. They are…

Before getting too worried it would be a good idea to weigh yourself on the same scale you took your original weight on. Scales can vary a lot! We have two at home and they are 5 lbs different!

I had spoken to the massage therapist about the possibility of bursitis the first time it happened and she seemed to think that wasn't it - basically she pressed into one spot on my hip and said if it was bursitis I would be writhing in pain, which I wasn't. On the other hand, icing it sure can't hurt! And it's been a…

Thanks very much. I will pay more attention to my stride - I'm sure you're right that I am protecting my knee somehow. And that stretch sounds great - I can do that even when I am at work at my desk :)

I love the Fall too! To me it is my 'new year' - cool, crisp days, just blow out the summer's lethargy. My cooking/baking urges kick in again too at this time of year :) Made some potato leek soup this afternoon. And I've just started the C25K program for the first time - being able to run 5K all at once is an amazing…

I enter my intentional exercise, like inskydiamonds said, and anything else that is over and above what I normally do. Like if I'm going to do a whole lot of cleaning or if I'm walking a lot more than usual because I'm sightseeing with family or something. Ordinary day-to-day stuff I don't enter.

Thanks everyone for helping me with this - it sounds like the verdict is in, that's for sure! I will keep my runners for running only :) I will keep my eye out for good insoles that might bring life back to my old pair of runners and I might need to invest in a new set of orthotics for my regular schlepping around shoes.…

So it sure sounds like I should have a dedicated pair just for running! I do have an old pair that I could wear for other stuff. I think I will do that since I don't want to lay out more money for another new pair right now. Thanks everyone - your feedback is much appreciated! And yes, I do love the personalized attention…
-
Hm...that makes a lot of sense, thanks lilchino4af and lutzsher. I may just have to invest in another pair!

I have since recalculated my speed and distance and can say now that the Nike+ iPod/IPhone app is pretty darn accurate. My low calories burned were indeed because I run so slowly! (At least for now :) )
-
I downloaded the $1.99 app and it seems to work but I don't have the sensor version to compare it to. I wonder about the calories burned though, it seems kind of low. Then again I do run very slowly.
-
I really like the whole 'budgetting' idea with the calories, that's how I approach this as well. I've sure gotten better at resisting doing any "impulse shopping" so to speak! The iphone/ipod app has really helped me make better choices when I'm eating out, that's for sure.

The green tea has less caffeine than the black tea would, so I don't know if the caffeine aspect would explain the difference this time. Maybe you just are more gazelle-like and hit that sweet spot of energy we all get now and then :)

Popcorn is my go-to snack! Sometimes I sprinkle some nutritional yeast on it for some protein, and a nutty, buttery flavor. :)
-
Mine's public too and I'm at 1230 cals...feel free to take a peek. I recently made some veggie crumble tacos that were delicious, filling and under 400 cals!

Wow, what an inspiration! Your hard work and determination has paid off - congratulations and bask in the glory of a job well done, you deserve it!!

I love MFP partly because it is all about the math! The fact that it was all about the math is what convinced me I could actually do it. Thanks for explaining these concepts so clearly. :) One thing I do wonder about is if everyone knows that the MFP exercise calories are high, why doesn't MFP lower them?
-
I would be definitely picking that up and eating it! Popcorn in all forms is delicious!

Maybe I will do that C25K with you one day Lori! You have certainly inspired me to at least try to jog. I was a bit nervous about my repaired knee, but it seemed to be fine! Perhaps it's time to check out the running shoe store! Another small success today: 8) I don't mind if people look at my profile, because I know my…

I have a recumbent bike and I quite like it. It doesn't burn as many calories as MFP says a stationery bike does, but apparently MFP estimates are high anyway, so I just use what my bike's computer says. (Until I can get a heart rate monitor!) I can read my book while I ride it and it is easy on my back and comfy on my…

I have one more thing to add to my list of small successes today! 7) I jogged! Not for very long or for very fast, but my sister's (goal30Lori) progress in her C25K program inspired me to try alternating jogging with walking and I did it!
-
Thanks everyone for sharing your successes too! It sure is about a lot more than the number on the scale - my life is just, well, better! Having more energy is wonderful, and being able to look myself square in the mirror and not look away is awesome!
-
Oh, and: 6) Even my shoes are looser!

What if you were to measure the volume of the marinade beforehand and then measure again what's left after the item's been soaking, and then count the calories that were in the difference? Messy and inconvenient I guess, but you'd probably just have to do it the first time you made a specific item....

I'm fairly new at this but the only thing I would add is to try and cut out the pop/soda and have water instead, and to eat more whole natural foods instead of processed ones. You get to eat a lot more stuff that way! It's a learning curve alright! Good luck!
