  • Same here, but there is a phone app called DriveBit that syncs with your FitBit. You start the app when you are driving and stop the app when you arrive. It syncs with the FitBit to tell it to disregard any "steps" during that time frame.

  • I just discovered single leg deadlifts. I do both....regular and single legs. I think the single leg ones are really helping my balance. I also squat. But squats aren't my favorite. Deadlifts are.
  • I have both, and if I had to choose just one, I would go for the HRM. When I first began exercising, I was using MFP's calorie burn estimates and not losing much weight at all. I found I MFP was waaayyyyy over estimating how many calories I burned during exercise. After using the HRM to record my exercise, I started seeing…
  • I have the Fitbit One, but in hindsight, I would have been fine with the Zip (the One tracks sleep and floors climbed, both interesting but definitely not necessary). The Zip is $60. I did notice that Best Buy carries a 2-pk of Zips for $99. So if you have a friend interested in buying one, you could split the cost and get…

  • One other suggestion.....if your budget can handle it, maybe invest in a FitBit or other activity monitor. Using the online calculators (even knowing my body fat) gave me an overestimation of my TDEE. I chose the moderately active setting because I work out 4-6 times per week. However, other than my workouts, I'm pretty…
  • ^^This. When I started lifting I lost 0 pounds in the first 6 weeks. I was getting frustrated, but I knew I had the right formula with the right TDEE and my deficit was right on target (according to both my personal trainer and my physician). So I just hung with it. And then all of sudden about 6 weeks in........WHOOSH,…
  • I switched gyms in January and signed up for a personal training package. The trainer they assigned me was about 30 lb overweight. I was kind of shocked, but decided to give him a chance. The thing that made me get rid of him wasn't his weight.....it was his inability to listen to me and design a program based on my goals.…
  • Both before and after. However, if I eat before, I have to have at least 30 minutes (or ideally 1 hour) before my workout. I once ate *just* before my workout and about hurled on the gym floor. :blushing:
  • You may be right.....I should have said the FitBit doesn't work for strength training. I normally burn ~500 calories per workout (30 min of strength and 30 min on the treadmill doing HIIT). My HRM recently died, and I just relied on my FitBit and had a calorie burn of ~175. So yeah, the BodyMedia may be different.
  • I can answer this question from personal experience.....My Polar FT4 HRM died and I went to Target and bought a New Balance N4 with chest strap (~$75 US). My gym is just across the street. I spent about 30 minutes in the locker room setting it up, and tried it out. It would *not* read my heart rate. The instructions are…
  • Well, FitBit and BodyMedia are not heart rate monitors. They don't measure your heart rate at all. They are pedometers with a lot of extras. For example, the FitBit tracks sleep and flights of stairs climbed. (Sorry, I don't have any experience with BodyMedia, but I expect it's similar to FitBit.) Neither the FitBit nor…

  • Having traveled to Europe and tasted REAL chocolate, I have to agree. Nothing like Belgium chocolates, Ritter Sport, and other European chocolates. I would blow a whole day's worth of calories on some good quality chocolate. But not a Hershey bar.
  • That's a great idea. If I can't have them altered, I might go that route. If I sell both, maybe I'll have enough to get one pair. Thanks!
  • You might want to look at the FitBit Aria. It syncs wirelessly to their website BUT with a premium membership (I think it was about $50/year), you get the ability to export your data to excel spreadsheets in either .XLS or .CSV formats. From there you can crunch numbers to your heart's content!
  • Natural peanut butter Almonds or cashews Turkey pepperoni Hard boiled eggs Protein bars (I try to limit these to just the days I work out) String cheese (or any individually wrapped natural cheese) Full fat Greek yogurt
  • Love http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/ I get a lot of my recipes from there too. Had some really good Sloppy Joe Stuffed Peppers this week. Yumm-O.
  • Check out www.ziplist.com. I like this app for a bunch of reasons: 1) I can browse recipes on the web, use the ZipList Recipe Clipper to "clip" the recipe and add the recipe to my menu planner and the ingredients to a grocery list. 2) The grocery list can be pulled up on my phone while I'm at the grocery store so I can…
  • I use American cheese for the "creamy" part of mac and cheese, but I like some sharp cheddar cut in small cubes for some "bite." I agree....try not salting the macaroni when you boil it.........?
  • Fantastic! Your abs look awesome. I'm hoping I get there at some point. I agree......heavy lifting has helped me more than anything else. Great Job!!
  • Thanks for your encouragement. I've never spent more than $20-30 on a pair of jeans before, and this was a HUGE splurge for me. I'm hoping you're right!!
  • You ROCK!! Your post (and resopnse) goes to show that not all of us come to these boards with the same goals and one size DEFINITELY does not fit all. While there are some scientific principles to weight loss and fitness, we each have our own goals and challenges that will be different than everyone else. Kudos to you, Bat…
  • I just bought these bluetooth ones and I love them. They come with detachable over-the-ear hooks and I find when I'm running on the treadmill, they stay in place even when I get really sweaty. And the price is certainly right!…
  • There are a couple of ladies at my gym that use walkers. I'm always so impressed that they are committed to working out. One of them is in in her 70s, but the other lady is fairly young....like 50s. Also, I was Planet Fitness the other day, and this guy who looked like he might have Cerebral Palsy came in in a wheelchair.…
  • LOL, Yeah, I though about that......but I knew someone was going to ask what it meant, and I was trying to keep it expletive-free at work.
  • ^^This was my first thought too. It's supposed to be hard. Last year when I first started working with a trainer, he was pushing me hard. I kept saying "I can't" over and over. He finally said to me, "Listen, I see you do hard *kitten* every day. You work 40+ hours a week, you work hard at eating right, you provide for…
  • I've felt the same. I started lifting weights about 6-8 weeks ago. I'm 47 years old, 25 lb overweight with a 44% body fat. I do NOT look good in my spandex workout capris, and the first couple of times working out with my trainer, I was pretty self-concious in the weight room full of bodybuilders. But........the other day…
  • Oh ohh, I forgot about this one. In the gym where I used to work out, this lady would come in, about 45 years old, skin tight jeans and 4 inch heels, big poofy blonde hair and bright red lipstick. She would do maybe 3 reps on one machine, 3 reps on another, and then she'd be gone. I finally asked my trainer what was up…
  • Not sure how old your kids are, but beginning when my sister and I were in about 2-3 grade, my mom made us responsible for packing our own lunch the night before. We were also responsible for making our own breakfast. At that age, we could make toast and pour milk on cereal and any requisite clean-up that needed to happen.…
  • There's a guy at my gym I call The Smiler. He has this huge "I just won the lottery" kind of smile ALL THE TIME. The other day he was on the recumbent bike and I was on the treadmill. I glanced over to him and he was smiling and waving at me. I waved back.....but then realized he was waving right hand, then left hand…
