  • Since we're on the yoga topic... I find it extremely boring. I know it is supposed to be good for you, and heavens knows that I could be more flexible. What do people think about during yoga? Maybe if I turn off the tv sound and put some other music on I could focus on that instead? I must be A.D.D. when it comes to yoga.…
  • I love the weekends because I have so much more time for workouts! I get a quick one in on Friday, but go at it hard on Sat with strength, and a lot of cardio on Sunday. I also limit myself to only going out to eat no more than 1x per week if the opportunity arises. And I make sure to have one glass of water for each beer.…
  • Got my pullup bar yesterday, and some of those swivel pushup handles, so I'm good to go! My husband is really enjoying his first week of the program. And I'm really enjoying listening to him realize that he's not superman! (I don't mean that in a bad way, but he's already pretty ripped and it's nice to know even he can…
  • DJH - That reminds me of a backpacking trip when we had a little yearling black bear wander towards our site while we were eating dinner. We put the food away but he kept coming, so we pulled out knives and bear spray. We wanted to chase him away, so my friend walked towards the trees with bear spray in one hand and his…
  • I haven't been to Glacier since I was little, but you can certainly do all of those things here in Jackson Hole! It's quite amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed my Alaska trip as well. They are all beautiful.
  • We call it spring mountaineering here since the snow up high sticks around until July. Slap on some crampons, grab an ice axe and head up the mountain. We attempted to summit the Middle Teton a few summers ago, and even though we started at 5am we were only at the saddle between the Middle and South by 11am. So we stopped…
  • One of my favorite places in Utah is The Canyonlands (south). You can really get back in there, and the photography options are endless if you like reflections, red rock, desert plants, etc.
  • PirateNinja - Birds are really fun aren't they? But, yes, difficult at times. I work at a fish hatchery on a wildlife refuge. We have a small half acre fishing pond that birds flock to, especially in the winter. This morning there were 2 trumpeter swans and a ton of ducks (bufflehead, goldeneye, etc). We have several Great…
  • Don't get me wrong. I don't do all 38 miles in one day! We do it in 3 days usually, although my husband is going to try the whole thing in one day this summer (hey, I'll be awake for the sunrise after dropping his crazy butt off at the trailhead at 5am!) Longest I have hiked in one day is probably 15 miles. Longest in one…
  • I have found that it works just as well to replace billy bands with hand weights or ankle weights. My husband was doing TaeBo 2-3x per week for the last 6 months, but his body got used to it. Now he is on P90X and it is kicking his butt! In my experience TaeBo is great for legs, shoulders and abs. It might not hurt to add…
  • I am surrounded by Grand Teton National Park and Bridger Teton National Forest, so I spend all my time hiking there. My absolute favorite is the 38.2 mile Teton Crest Trail. Stunning views and relatively isolated. I just got a Canon Powershot 210X for an African safari trip. I wanted something small and not flashy, but…
  • We normally only eat protein bars when outside doing all day activity (skiing, hiking). If I am at home working out I try to find other alternatives such as milk, nuts, edamame, hard boiled egg or cottage cheese/fruit.
  • Anytime a recipe calls for buttermilk you can substitute with lowfat yogurt. I've never tried it with pancakes, but it works great on homemade bread! Speaking of pancakes, my husband hates syrup, so he uses yogurt and fresh fruit instead. It's pretty addicting.
  • In the winter I love snowboarding or cross country skiing, and in the summer I trade off between my road bike and backpacking. Basically I prefer to be outside, but that doesn't happen on weekdays much. Dang job.
  • Funny. I play trombone too. I never wanted to be a music major, but now I play trombone in 4 different groups as a very time consuming hobby! I wanted to be a marine biologist and work with dolphins. I did get a degree in marine biology, but I work with fish instead. They are not nearly as much fun.
  • There is a whole series of workout dvds called 10 Minute Solutions. The dance one might be fun for her, and 10 min is not too long for boredom.
  • Scale is hidden, unless my husband pulls it out again. He uses our cat as an excuse. He weighs himself and then holding the cat! Our cat has been holding steady at 13.5 - 14.5 lbs even though he's on a "diet". He really is just a big cat (39" long when stretched out fully). I will not weigh myself until Sunday morning…
  • I was already planning on starting Feb 28th!! So, yes, I will join you. It will be my first time, although my husband started this week and I have been sneaking peeks (done Ab Ripper 2x already). I just need a pull up bar and I'm good! I will be doing the Lean version because my recent knee surgery won't allow the…
  • I hear ya. When I joined MFP 3 yrs ago we didn't have the news feed and status updates. It was just a bunch (not nearly as many as now) of people looking to get fit, lose weight and share ideas. That is why I returned to this site after health problems. But it has changed and I'm not sure how much I really like some of the…
  • I started the V-Day challenge but was plagued by back problems. I'm all healed up and rearing to go! My other Easter Challenge has me trying to reach 140, which coincidentally is just over 12 lbs. So count me in! Currently 153, but I will weigh in next Monday.
  • Polar F11. I got it over 3 years ago when there weren't as many models available. I love it, but it has a lot of features that I don't use. I recommended my husband get a Polar F4, or there are some decent looking Timex ones on Amazon for half of what I paid.
  • Howdy. My name is Liz. I have another Easter Challenge so this will help me as well. I had major knee surgery about 3 months ago and my doc just told me I can jog, so I will work hard on the 100 miles (mostly walking I'm sure). I have been working hard on getting my leg muscles back into shape, so I haven't been losing…
  • I started to drink nothing but water/tea on weekdays and it has helped in more ways than one (weight loss, better sleep, less snacking). And when I do have a few drinks on the weekends I make sure to drink a glass of water in between.
  • Finally starting to see some results! I think it is because my knee has healed enough to allow me to jog. And my back isn't tweaked so much that I can't lift weights. I really hope to hit my mini-goal on Feb 28, but it isn't too important because I am starting P90X on March 1 and that is where I will see the most results!!…
  • I give myself one cheat day a week, mainly for sanity purposes. It usually involves going out to eat with friends and not worrying too much about calories. Athough, I do make sure I get a really good workout in that day and drink a lot of water. I think your metabolism could use a boost once in a while so it doesn't get…
  • My experience is that machines are always high and MFP is all over the board. Only way to truly know is with a heart rate monitor. It will be your best friend.
  • Looking forward to the results!
  • Fish biologist by day. Musician by night.
  • I am 5'8" and currently 155 with a goal of 140. Your goal of 5 lbs a month is very reasonable and smart. I am shooting for the end of April for my anniversary. I used this site several years ago to drop from 182 to 140, so it is possible. I just had knee surgery and gained a few back. I'm 35. No kids, but a very supportive…
