  • You know I don't know. haha. This is funny, I'm usually FULL of questions - pestering people in order to get every last detail down and now... two questions in a row that I haven't thought of. Yes that would change my use of the equation to figure out my daily maintenance. I may have to contact Polar and see what equation…
  • You have the Ironman? There are a few different versions of it, but mine definitely doesn't show those kinds of numbers! What is your average heart rate during your workouts? And if you don't mind me asking, how much do you weigh? I burn about 700 in an hour doing strength training.... with my trainer. So it's very…
  • Hmmm that's a good question. I don't know. I haven't used the other HRM's so I don't know what they ask for even. Do they ask for that information? I went with the Timex because it got great reviews and it's like half the size! Not to mention the girls versions of the other HRM's were all like powder colors. Bleh. But…
  • I'm with you there!!! When I work out with my trainer doing strength training plus a 10-15 minute warm up for a total of 70 minutes.... I burn about 700 calories. You shouldn't be taking long rests between sets. In fact you should do a few sets (of different exercises) before resting at all. And even then only 30…
  • Awesome... I would say that is probably right. The equation is written out a little strange (no fault of yours of course), but it seems right.
  • Oh thanks! I'll give it a shot and see what kind of number I come up with. I'm pretty sure when I workout that my HRM is doing an accurate measure of calories burnt... it's just once my heart rate drops below something like 75 it stops counting calories burnt for some reason. I wore it for 3 hours just walking around the…
  • Yes, but as I mentioned in my question (maybe not clearly though) my HRM doesn't count calories when my heart rate is low. I'm trying to be as accurate as possible, so I am trying to avoid the other option if I can find a way.
  • Yeah I thought of that... I was just looking for a more accurate estimate. Thanks though!
  • I would say it's "tipping the scale" as well. Pretty common saying.
  • Hello.... I posted this question in a different thread but I think it may have gotten lost since it wasn't really in line with the topic. So I thought I'd post it separately. Yesterday I had a sort of lower impact exercise. I hiked up a mountain for just over 2 hours. But I really wasn't feeling tired at all and my heart…
  • The site doesn't calculate how many calories burnt while doing weights. It only calculates how many you burn with cardio. Of course if you have a heart rate monitor it would be more tuned to YOU rather than a rough estimate. So if you want to know how many calories burnt during weight training.... you need a heart rate…
  • I wouldn't put too much faith behind this method of measuring body fat. It is one of the least accurate ways to measure body fat as there are several things that can cause an error, not to mention the scale itself. If you want a more accurate way... the best options are DXA and Hydrostatic weighing. I've come to understand…
  • A similar question.... Yesterday I had a sort of lower impact exercise. I hiked up a mountain for just over 2 hours. But I really wasn't feeling tired at all and my heart rate was pretty low. Given that i wasn't on my own, I couldn't just up the pace. Anyway I burnt almost 900 calories but because it took me so long to…
  • Depending on what kind of knee problems you have... often times these things can be improved through strength training. A lot of overweight people complain of pain when they walk and so they just don't do it. But really, a lot of the pain comes from the weight. My mom constantly says she can't exercise because it hurts her…
  • That link isn't working for me. Is that issue on my end or is it the link?
  • I've always heard 2 hrs before bed. But who knows, they change their mind about these things on the daily basis. I don't ever follow that and I don't think that having a small snack would be a problem, especially when you are so low on your caloric intake.
  • OH... and my reps are at 15-20 depending on the exercise. My heart rate is always in the upper 10% range while doing this as well. So... obviously if you are doing a less intense weight training session, you can expect a lower calorie burn. I just use my HRM.
  • Right... which is what I've been doing. I was just wondering if there was an actual reason why they didn't include it. And yes you burn calories when you do anything. I only include cardio and strength training as exercise calories though. I never include everyday things like walking my dog. But I have no idea how many…
  • Is there a reason why when you log your weight training on this site it doesn't also include a place for how many calories burnt during this time? It only has it on the "cardio" section.
  • I'm not sure if I need more friends who torture me! haha. The funny thing was... I think she planned it. Right before we left for our hike she INSISTED on having a small meal. I couldn't understand why she wouldn't just have a snack since she had eaten not long before. Little did I know she was planning on doubling our…
  • Nobody would carry me! Plus I'm such a night person it's hard to flip that around. The workout was grueling just to follow up. haha. I wasn't sore though, which is good!
  • Maybe I'm misunderstanding her... but it doesn't seem to me that she "falls of the wagon" at night because she is "hungry" as you are all implying. I mean she didn't really say that. For me, when I overeat it is never because I'm hungry, it's just because I want it. I also tend to be slightly OCD so I keep track of…
  • I don't know if this applies to you... but maybe spend less time at home? That's when I tend to eat more - when I'm hanging around home. Even if you go to a friends house or something. When I'm at home it's just so easy to access and I'm more comfortable and I tend to just think about it more. When I'm out, hours can pass…
  • Ouch. I pulled something in my arm/shoulder a few weeks ago and it still hurts. Definitely looking at a long heal time. I hope yours heals sooner!
  • If only so easy. 24 hr notice required. I'm not made of money so throwing away $75 is not an option for me.... I just really hope I'm not sore.
  • I'm sure I'll laugh about it in a week or so... right now I'm too tired to laugh.
  • This post really has no point - just thought I'd share my day. My friend and I decided to go for a hike today since it was nice. We first drove her car to the end point and then she jumped in my car and we went to the start. Reason being, I hate back tracking. So instead of walking somewhere and walking back... I just walk…
  • Yes, I think you're right that the question was kind of taken more as "oh no this girl needs help she's going to eat a bucket of ice cream." But really it was just a hypothetical that I've always been curious about. Thanks for your answer. I was curious as to what the thoughts are around it.
  • Right... I'm more getting at the concept rather than suggesting it's something I'm going to do.
  • So is that really all it boils down to is....where you want to devote your energy? So lets say I do a warm up and then I do weights. Then I regain some energy and maybe an hour later I go for a 2 hr hike. Would this be beneficial or am I kind of spinning my wheels? I'm just curious because often I have to split things up…
