  • This...is bang on!
  • Thanks for all your great insights! I think the "runner" drive is just something so unique and powerful and that's clearly alive and well in all of you! I wish you all the best in your continued trail, road and tri's of the future! :-))
  • Certainly you need a level of seriousness and discipline to complete a marathon but for my first one I really wish I had taken more time to actually enjoy it from time to time and smile instead of being so time focused and serious; especially when i hit the wall at mile 20. That was ten years ago and I didn't run my second…
  • Just a note; regardless of your level, running history and current lifestyle, there is no absolute advice on here. Even the accomplished runners on this thread, who have a ton of experience, can only give you the sum of their shared experiences. It is then up to you to decide if all, some or none of it applies to you.…
  • Beyond the fact that this is totally a personal choice and what works for you, one thing I do pretty religiously is flush my system after long runs. (over 13 miles). Basically I drink Cytomax, usually 3 to 4 bottles until I pee close to clear. Every time I've done that, I've felt so much better the next day, over not doing…
  • Here in tax happy, expensive Canada, those shoes are running $150 ish, so based on price alone, and naturally assuming you like minimalist, why not give them a whirl! Personally a NB/Brooks person and cant wait to try shoes once I'm off IR.
  • As someone currently suffering from a likely stress fracture in the foot (navicular bone); which I stubbornly refused to get properly diagnosed, ...DON'T wait. Go and see a specialist and hopefully bone scan, as xray's don't show stress fractures very well. Having had PF as well - this doesn't sounds like that but go see a…
  • That is crazy! And still so many questions unanswered!
  • What was the injury?
  • So agree with this. I've been off for almost 6 weeks and likely will be another few months before my injury is healed and I know I will have to start from scratch. But my focus will be to come back fully, not to rush and risk re-injury. This is taking long enough!! Great advice Carson.
  • Whether they impact "performance" or not is inconclusive but for many they do help. I had compartment release surgery on my left leg which left the muscle looser and more prone to injury (according to surgeon); so wearing a sleeve on my left leg has helped tremendously. Running is a very personal sport, whether it be…
  • Agree - you should have no issues if you've had some run in the socks prior with no problems. Worst case scenario (as this happened to me once), you can roll the sock down off your calf to your ankle. It will release the muscle and it's also a very hip style statement!
  • Agree with Carson..find it interesting that some "diagnose" it as mental...listen to your body and push a bit each time to see how you respond. Don't listen to those that tell you about how "they" are...its about you, not them.
  • So, ooops, yes so I meant every 3 to 4 miles on a long run. Interesting though how many different ways there are to train and nourish the body as you tear it apart running distance. Always my favourite conclusion: even though we all share a basic physiology, there are so many differences in our systems and conditions, that…

  • Hard to say what the exact cause of your cramps are as it depends on many factors like where your training is at and at what point in your run/race do the cramps present. So it may or may not be electrolyte related. One option I hear lots about is pickle juice or mustard, which has ben touted by a number of distance…
  • Thanks for everyone's replies. I ended up getting an addidas climacool shirt on sale. Gonna start running in it now (a month before marathon day) so it wont be new! Appreciate the feedback!
  • Frankly PR's are fun but winning anything was never a goal nor something I really care about. What's most important to me is just having the ability to run distance, to soak in the race atmosphere, to feel my body work and hopefully respond well when I need it too, and to finish in decent shape. The world of pace, splits,…
  • Wait....you're supposed to get a shirt??
  • I am stuck on band aids and they are stuck on me
  • I'm still rocking a Garmin 201 Forerunner from 2003. It matches my classic addidas shorts (kidding). It does gap on trails (not the shorts), but so do a lot of Garmins. I cant upload anything from it because I don't think that technology was available then, but with the times I'm throwing down, probably for the better. It…
  • Ah yes....I read that book..very true!
  • ...tuning fork...im telling you...it works.
  • You are lucky - in the great Canadian social medicare system - It will be a year before I could get an MRI - but if you have a blister and go to emergency you can see a doctor right away. (Sorry I digress). Since you have an MRI at your disposal, for sure take that over a tuning fork any day, but the technique - I think -…
  • So this is highly un-medical, but I was in the same situation last fall...stress fracture in 4th meta and had an xray that was inconclusive as has been mentioned - hard to see. I was seeing a physio about something else and mentioned it to him. He came back with a tuning fork; like the ones you stroke and they vibrate to…
  • ...specific to the topic...my opinion is that PF is not a reason to do water running...you can get it fixed and continue to run on trail or pavement as you heal.
  • Hi, I'm dealing with PF now and have been for about 3 months. All those things you are doing are good. For me the one thing that has made a difference is the Graston technique. Find an RMT that will do that for you with the metal tools. Hurts like a "you know what", but has made a significant positive difference and kept…
  • Thanks for your responses; I really appreciate them and truly helpful. Lesson learned for me; an in that sense my 30k race debacle will be very well worth it as I prep for marathon day. Thanks again...this is why I love this site!!
  • I don't disagree necessarily with this...not all bodies are created equal however and people sweat and drop sodium at different levels. I know I need more miles to be ready for the marathon and have 8 weeks left, and I'm at the point where I need to pick a hydration/fuelling plan for runs over three hours and stick with…
  • Those stickers are for your car?? Damn I got a 26.2 sticker that I was going use after my marathon in June...but well I was going to stick it somewhere else.
