  • I, too, have had both lapband and gastric bypass. Wish I had by pass first. There are so many people having problems with the lapband and in some countries they are no longer doing it. I had lots of complications with my lapband and never did lose the weight with it. Gastric by-pass surgery just about killed me but once I…
  • I don't often make my shakes, I guess I am lazy, but I do drink EAS AdvantEDGE carb control with 17 g protein per 11 oz. It comes in Chocolate Fudge, Dark Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla, that I know of. They have around 110 calories, 3 Fat grams, and about 4 carbs. My doctor recommended the EAS protein powder to me…
  • I am 19 months out from RNY surgery and I still depend on protein drinks an I think I always will, they are a great way to refuel after exercise or before, for that matter. There is no way that I can eat enough food to get my protein in if I don't. I don't know what they want you eating with the sleeve at this time, but…
  • I, too, am an off and on smoker and I think it has hindered my weight loss really bad. I quit smoking in Dec. 2010 but have smoked when I am around people that smoke and while having some work done on my house. (my contractors smoked) Although I do not allow smoking in my house I would go out with them, back in May I broke…
  • I am sure the doctor was thinking she was helpful. Truth, very few patients can keep the weight off without WLS, some do but it is very few. Gastric by-pass is also know to pretty much cure diabetes in most cases. I know of two people that it did not but they were very bad diabetics and I don't think they eat right. I know…
  • Thanks I will have to try this.
  • I'd love to know how you learned to deal with the separating of peanut butter? Please inform me. I have been pouring the oil off, but when you get to the bottom it is very dry.
  • I use to hate the thoughts of hummus, but I love it now, Whole Food in the US has it with not near the amount of fat that most has.
  • If the calories she burned while standing doing her job counted she wouldn't be trying to lose weight, she'd be skinny.
  • If you had a fitbit or bodybugg you would learn that you burn calories just breathing. I have a slow metabolism but according to my bodybugg I burn 1.4 calories a minute. That isn't much but you have to refull your body to account for those calories just as much as you do your exercise calories. I'd figure out my BMR…
  • Gina, I do not regret having had gastric by-pass surgery at all. I do, however, regret having had the lapband and wasted not only my time, but also money on such a tool that does not work long term for many and some just not at all. I am 18 months out on my gastric by-pass and have not lost all I would like to but I know…
  • HarlanJen is probably going to kill me for saying this, but when I was lifting my 15 lb dumb bells I noticed that my abs were getting more firm and have even noticed them getting flabby again since I quit doing the dumb bells. I for one think that weight lifting is they key to fat loss, but I am not studying this like Jen…
  • I will say I have to agree with you on the lapband being a big waste of time and money, mine was. I had it removed in Jan. 2011 and revised to the RNY and couldn't be happier. Yes, some people do have problems later on down the road and some do regain their weight but like anything it is up to you to do the work and no…
  • I guess I am rude about it because I will tell people that I cannot look at them while they eat because the amount of food on their plates and the huge bites they take make me sick. Some think I am jealous because I can't eat that much, but honestly it makes me want to throw up. I figure if they know in advance they will…
  • I have had both the lapband and rou-en-y (gastric by-pass) surgery. The lapband was not a good fit for me, I lost about 30 lbs all total with it an over a period of 3 years had nothing but trouble so in Jan. 2011 I had RNY and yes, I had some complications while in the hospital but it took care of itself, after receiving 4…
  • I am 57 years old and am doing dumbbells 3 days a week and elliptical 2 days, but am thinking about a JM DVD to do when I don't feel like actually doing my weights. Be sure an get plenty of protein once you start your exercise because you will need it to help maintain and build muscle.
  • I had my surgery on Jan. 24, 2011, so I am almost 17 mos. out. I have lost right at 80 lbs since RNY. Had lapband in 2007 and lost 30 lbs but gained most of it back. I love my RNY and would do it all over again. I'd like to lose 30-50 more pounds. If I do I will be happier, but I am also very happy with what I have done so…
  • I have had gastric by-pass surgery (rou-en-y) and when I see someone morbidly obese, I so want to reach our to them, but I know they would more than likely be offended. I know I would have been and was when my sister suggested to me to have the surgery. I cannot stand to watch other people eat, esp. if they get a big fork…
  • I recently bought a fitbit although i am not 100% sure of how to use it, except to track steps. I also own a body bugg. The reason I bought a fitbit was a friend of mine was here and we went every where together and her fitbit said she had about 3000 steps more than I did with my bodybugg. So I got to wondering about it…

  • It is not a cake but there is a boxed brownie that I have found very satisfying when I think I need sweet. It is called No Pudge Fudge Brownie Mix, it is in a pink box and I bought mine at Krogers, you can also fix just a single serving of it, which is wonderful for me.
  • My doctor told me know lettuce until after my 3 month check up and I didn't try it until after that. He also told me not to do iceberg lettuce because it had little nutritional value to it, but to eat baby spinach and romaine that type, so if you are only 2 months out, and my memory may be wrong on the number of months you…
  • I was T2 prior to surgery and of course I am still considered T2, but my last A1C was 4.8 and I was proud of that. I am losing again, since I added more food to my eating plan but I have to watch because I don't want to stretch my pouch.
  • If you can lose it all without surgery I would not put myself though it, there is a lot of maintenance to a lapband, I have had both band and RNY and would choose RNY any day over the band. One thing you asked is about insurance covering it if you drop below your BMI. In KY I know of no insurance that will cover it if you…
  • I have learned that if I plateau that I need to switch things around a bit. Our bodies get use to us doing the same thing and will not let go of weight. Change your exercise around some, eat a few more calories than normal. Do 2 days of weigh lifting vs all 5 days of cardio. Weigh Lifting burns more fat than cardio does…
  • Welcome, I have just been here a day myself, but I had the RNY after having a failed band. I know lots of DS'ers that post on obesity help.com . Definitively not trying to run you off but think you may find more of the type of surgery you had there. Please continue to check in here, too though.

  • I don't do counseling, but I know how I got to eating bad and I also know that I need to look after my diet. I have been looking after it and think I was eating too few of calories. I am so pumped to be starting a new journey in this road to recovery. I think being overweight is just like being a druggie or alcoholic,…
  • Thank you, I started doing weights yesterday, and am wishing I could do them today but was told not two days in a row. :(
  • I don't think the gastric by-pass is the problem, without it I could not lose and I tried and tried, I mean I couldn't lose with the band although I kept my calories where the doctor wanted them. There is nothing that any one can eat that I can't eat, just can't eat as much. I will admit that eating more scares me to death…
  • My doctor said between 700-1000 calories but to stay closer to the 700 mark
