The man who participated in this study did take suppliments. He had vitamins daily, and also had a protein shake daily. You cannot survive on the twinkie diet. He did not recommend the diet to anyone. He was just proving a point that calories matter more than what you are actually eating.

I was just about to post about this same issue. I am going over my sugar by -50 to -80 grams a day. I am having fresh fruit as snacks, and shredded wheat for breakfast and lunch. I feel really bad, but I don't see where I can cut this down without starving. Same question as Staceyfnz, is it important to count these sugars?
