  • Definitely go for a 10k. I found a huge positive change in how running 'felt' as I became able to run for an hour. I started to really enjoy it and became addicted!
  • I'm not sure if I decided to lose weight or run a marathon first... either way, they go hand-in-hand! The idea of being able to look good in slim-fit designer togs is pretty intoxicating, though ;) And last but not least... I need a girlfriend! I came out of an 11-year relationship (and marriage) last year, so this is part…
  • Chicken and mushroom risotto! Delicious and nutricious :)
  • Did you jump straight into exercising like that, or have you been running for a while? You need at least a day's rest, prefereably two, after each session to recover when you start out. When you're more conditioned, reduce that to a day or different work outs on subsequent days. Sounds like you're overdoing - take it easy,…
  • Definitely every day for me, although I've had to come to terms with the fact that my weight will sometimes, seemingly inexplicably, go up a couple of pounds and stay that way for a week or so. It's normally followed by a period of rapid loss. I don't know whether it's due to 'back-ups' down below, or something else, but I…
  • It's ALL about calories in vs out. Nothing ambiguous about it, you can't bend the first rule of thermodynamics. The first post was asking the wrong questions. The most complicated bit about weight loss isn't the amount of calories in - which, as this site can attest, is very easy to calculate - but working out the calories…
  • Definitely a good idea - somtimes eating more allows you to lose more! Counterintuitive, but once you've kick started your metabolism again the weight will start coming off. Just be aware, when you start eating more you may gain a few pounds to start with while your body 'stocks up'. Most of it will be water. After that,…
  • I'm in the same boat! Age 29, BMI of 27, looking to get down to mid-healthy BMI range. I've found the best way is to set yourself a challenge - I've taken up running, and signed up for a half marathon, but anything will work! As I'll get lighter and the weight will get harder to lose, the training sessions get naturally…
  • Also from the Wirral, but currently exiled in Lancaster!
  • ^ THIS Not eating back the calories you work off can often be counter-productive. Work out to get fit, to allow you to eat more, to look good, whatever... but your calorie deficit should remain moderate and sustainable. If not, your body will just crash. If that means eating more to make up for exercise, so be it.
  • The other option is to get a heart-rate monitor to get a proper estimate of the calories he's burning off exercising. I find this site overestimates exercise calories quite heavily compared to my HRM. But yeah, I agree with what someone else said that it sounds like he's undereating with those figures you provided.
  • What type of exercise? If he's lifting weights, or even if he's just fairly new to exercise, he may be replacing fat weight with muscle weight... which isn't a bad thing. If he's doing a lot of exercise, it might be worth investing in a body fat measuring device, such as some of those electrode scales, to get a real sense…
  • Yup, it's been a learning experience. I was eating too much when I wasn't dieting, and eating too little when I was dieting. This site is an education as well as a weight-loss tool!
  • When I reach my goal, I'm going clothes-shopping mental. It's been years since I bought clothes that fit properly, that I enjoy wearing, and that I look good in. It's vain, I know, but my current wardrobe is a sorry state of affairs. I can't wait! :)
  • I'm looking forward to enjoying buying clothes, and looking good! Oh, and finishing a marathon :P
  • Shin splints are so often caused by wearing badly-fitting shoes. What are you walking in at the moment? Do you over-pronate? If so, maybe the shoes you are in don't give you enough support. Just a few ideas :)
  • Cheers - it'll be interesting to see what it gets to when I'm at my target weight and fitness!
