Hello! I'm in graduate school for school psychology and I'll be done with all my classes in July. I'm just saying that to indicate that I have *some small amount* of credibility with this issue (even though I've mostly worked with school aged kiddos). If you feel more anxiety on days you exercise it can be a result of the…

I started Jan. 13, 2012 and reached my 'goal' weight July 24, 2013. So ~1.5yrs. That's 1.5yrs with some short time periods where I was not exercising/eating well just due to life circumstances/being a bit lazy. I have continued to eat well and exercise so I've lost a few pounds beyond what my goal was (or maybe I just…

Are you able to look at what your average heart rate was on your HRM? If you can you can use a few other calories-burned-heartrate websites to calculate how many calories were burned and see if the numbers seem more or less close. I'd check that and then if your HRM calculation is way off then there is probably something…

Honestly, it just takes time. My cousin also began working out more right about when I joined MFP and he said something to me that stuck - I'm sure he got it from somewhere: 'It takes 4 weeks for you to notice your body changing, 8 weeks for your friends/family to notice, and 12 weeks for anyone else to notice' --- you are…

Recently finished (drinking) a Celebrator clone that my cousin and uncle made a while back. I'll be back home from grad school next month and my uncle has some Centennial hops so an IPA is on the list. We made a blackberry Kolsch before that was really, really good so maybe we'll do that again with a different summer fruit…

I think there was just an article about this due to the Polar Vortex (haha). The only thing to worry about is frostbite. So, as long as you are dressed properly to protect your body from that, then it's just personal preference. It won't hurt your muscles or lungs, apparently. I personally don't run when it's very cold at…

See if there is a rock climbing gym near you!!! Great to do with two people (since you need someone to belay for you) and it's a great activity to do for couples because you get to work together, encourage each other, learn something new, and see how much better you get together! LOL, I love rock climbing, it's a full body…

As a general rule, it's OK to eat when you are hungry and not eat when you're not hungry. The issue is that if you are eating too few calories on a regular basis, then your body adjusts it's metabolism to account for not getting enough energy. This will affect your appetite and you won't be hungry even when you are not…

I bought a Polar HRM for about $40 at Target when I got mine...that was about 2-3 years ago. You can spend more money for a monitor that does more stuff. I know some people whose monitors tell them how many calories they burned but mine doesn't. Just keeps track of my heart rate for the duration of my workout. Notes my…

Haha! I love that someone mentioned black bean brownies!! I have a friend who is obsessed with chocolate but is also into eating healthy and clean and she makes the best black bean chocolate cake....it's so good. Anyway, give yourself a break and don't worry! Stressing out over what we eat is a trigger for negative…

First thing I notice in your diary is your sodium....it's way high. Now...I love salty things and when I was logging faithfully (which I'm not now) I was always a little over but not 1,000mg over. So I'd watch your sodium intake. Also, log your water consumption. It helps to make sure you are staying properly hydrated. I'm…

The Village Idiot 307 W Short St Marikka's 411 Southland Dr --> German place Henry Clay's Public House 112 N Upper St Check out the websites/reviews of those places and see if they seem like what you're looking for. I'm partial to Marikka's because I LOVE German restaurants. =D

Pft!.... You can get TONS of great stuff in Michigan, LOL. But, check out this website...I believe it's updated regularly (?) It lists distribution for each state and you can click on two states to compare what they have in common and stuff you can only get in either one of them. http://www.seekabrew.com/distro/index.html…

I also have a friend who either visited Belgium himself or knew someone who did.....either way he sent me a Facebook message a while back saying that he had some beer to send me and heavily hinted that it was Westvleteren so I'm hoping to try it as well! Also that's awesome about your brewery! I hope you do extremely well…

Well....it sounds good anyway. =D I brew with my uncle and a couple cousins. The worst we've done so far is break the hydrometer. Shattered on the floor (I did it...my hands were slippery with Star San and water). Oh well. I can't remember what we brewed...possibly also a cream ale so we didn't know how it ended up other…

I think that you main motivation should be something more intrinsic to you (ie. you want to get back in shape, or fit into something from your past, or be able to run a 5K....etc.). Having said that, I am away at graduate school and recently (over the summer) went to a wedding for friends from college in Columbus, OH. I…

Well...I'm a beer lover so I have two ways of dealing with drinking. Also, it's worth noting that I am now in graduate school and have been since August of 2012 and I do not have any money, LOL. So I don't really drink as MUCH beer as I used to. When I was working full time and had the cheapest rent imaginable it would be…

I am also in graduate school. I lost most of my goal amount prior to beginning grad school, but I did lose another 10lbs while here. I am sooo busy though!!! I understand what you are going through. =D Great post!

Going to Nashville for the weekend. I've never been .... I'm excited for a weekend with the girls and then some good music too! =D Also in another wedding later in the summer as well.

Your resting heart rate should be taken right when you wake up and before you get out of bed to do anything. Ideally. You could wear your HRM to bed and just wake up and press your button on the watch to start it...wait maybe a few minutes and then read what it said your AVG heart rate was. Or you could simply wake up,…

Yes...it could be shin splints...especially if you have it in both shins. You will want to take extra care to stretch before and after you run…and I’d even suggest stretching again later in the day just to make sure you’re getting everything loose. Make sure to stretch your calves/Achilles as well. You can have a partner…

So...there are those 'shoe fanny packs' that people have suggested or an acutal fanny pack if you're that cool. =D Honestly...I have a pair of ... tight capri length running pants that I got at Kohls and they have a zippered pocket that I put my key in.

Here’s the point. Dr. Oz has a medical degree. This gives him ‘cred’ to most people. I have to trust the opinion/advice of a person who graduated from medical school over my neighbor who lives 3 doors down (even if he’s the epitome of physical health --- or so he looks.) It would be counter-intuitive not to. So, to say…

Oops...we spelled it wrong. Sriracha Sauce: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sriracha_sauce At my grocery store it's in the same isle that has ketchup/mustard/bbq sauce...etc. It might be in the 'world foods' isle...or 'asian isle' if you have one. I put it on lots of stuff...anything I think might taste better with a…

I'm re-posting this, to make sure you see it...and b/c I feel the website is a little messy. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ Get your BMR, then there is a link that says "Daily Caloric Needs” in blue below that….it will give you the multiplication factors based on activity level. You may have to do a little…

Eat more. Eat the amount of calories you're supposed to. Figure out your BMR and TDEE and eat somewhere in between them (less than TDEE and AT LEAST or more than BMR) EDIT: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ This will give you a ballpark idea of your BMR, then you multiply by your 'activity level' to find TDEE.…

I generally weigh myself first thing in the morning too. If you don't feel like the number on the scale is driving you crazy then there's no problem with being curious. If you have negative feelings associated with weighing/the scale then I'd suggest not doing it. I know that my weight fluctuates and that if I go to a bar…
