  • Plenty of people on here will stay strict for 6 days, then have just one eat-what-I-want day or meal. You can still lose weight that way. One meal won't wreck your week, you'll still show some weight loss, and you won't feel like you're depriving yourself of things you like. You may find that after a great week, you're not…
  • How about Terry Fox? Wayne gretzky? Those guys from Strange Brew, Bob & Doug Mackenzie?
  • I know of a crossfit guy who held a standard plank for just over 6 minutes. i'd say it's good to build your core strength.
  • I agree, it's always "weather permitting" and that in itself is a subjective term depending on who you are. Speaking of crazy people running in the hot desert, ever see that youtube video of the guy who ran a mile in full Darth Vader costume (helmet too!) in the middle of the 120+ degree desert? Insane.
  • This was on the internet, so it must be true. Eating fruit doesn't make you fat, unless you eat a ton of overripe fruit. Do you do that? In addition to your 3-5 helpings, do you follow them with oreo's and chocolate milk? Probably not. I've read that bears gorge on fruit to get fat before hibernating, as do other mammals…
  • YES! I've read the I Quit Sugar book, as well as David Gillespie's 'The sweet poison'. It's an addiction - read her book, it's a fast read and will probably scare the hell out of you. My wife and I are getting off the stuff. It appears to ruin and affect every appetite control system your body has in place. What's worse is…
  • To start, I think you should eat whatever the hell you want, as long as you stay within the calorie goals each day. I know the paleo nuts (pun intended) will crow that 'all calories are not the same', but they are. A calorie is a calorie, as a standard measure of energy. It's just the source that matters. And I get that,…
  • Love your posts. Witty and intelligent, with dash of sarcasm. Thanks for helping me keep my sanity at my own desk!
  • How do you define 'awesome'? Are we talking about loving oneself or being satisfied with yourself (both of which are fine and a sign of a healthy person)? Or telling everyone in earshot that you're awesome? Does it really need to be said out loud? Must you broadcast it to everyone around? Awesome at what? Everything? Life?…
  • Hey, you can add me if you like. I log in every few hours, and have a small group of friends and we all post a few comments to each other every day, whether it's about the exercise, or food diary etc. good luck!
  • Hey, having been on here a while, I've realized that finding a small set of 'friends' that actually look at your diary and comment on your weight loss or exercise postings is really motivating. I find that as much as I hate to post when I eat garbage at a barbecue over the weekend, I do it anyway because I don't want to…
  • Sorry to hear about your accident. It must be tough but it looks like you've made the decision to get your old self back. Congratulations on taking that first step! Since you can't run or use an elliptical machine, etc yet, how about a rowing machine or some laps in a local pool? Tracking food is going to be crucial to…

  • Well, it seems that there's suddenly a lot of guys looking for community support from other guys in the same situation. I think that is awesome and I will send out a 'add friend' invite to many of the guys on this thread. Good luck with all your goals! We need it!
  • Hey Tom, nice to see some guys on here. I've always done this site solo and eventually, after the first few months of great progress, the old habits begin creeping in, and next thing I know I've put back pretty much everything I lost. And no amount of, 'wow, I like the way I look, I'm never going back to that..." talk…

  • I am also happily back and re-lost most of the weight. Some more to go, but feel free to add me. We all need a little motivation now and then.
  • Oh, do we all sound like that? I though it was just Queens girls and the Longuyland Medium. Yes, from Massapequa, originally from Bay Shore/Islip.
  • We could all use a little more accountability in our lives. My initial focus was to lose weight, and as I got closer to my goal I began lifting more, trying to stick to major moves. I don't have a lot of time for strength training or cardio outside of work, and unlike my wife I'm not motivated enough to wake up at 4:30 and…
  • That's an interesting find. I've read that honey, being mostly fructose, will promote fat storage in the body. However, I've also read that cinnamon is a powerful ingredient that promotes feelings of satiety, and therefore you will eat less. They appear to be unlikely bedfellows, but try it. What's the risk?
  • My guess...no science to back it up... is that if palm-style is using more muscle groups then I would think it would be preferred, unless you have a physical condition that precludes you from doing it. Isn't the goal here to hold it longer and get stronger, regardless of which method you use? Use both if you don't get any…
  • There are plenty of other estimators online, and I think you'll find that MFP is pretty close. It may be off by some percentage based on some special situation you may have, but for the average person it's close enough for government work.
  • Yes, sorry. PR is for personal record.
  • If you're just getting into strenth training, you'll want to find a dvd that you can follow and relate to, that doesn't leave you dreading the next workout. My wife falls into that category. So she started with a Beach Body DVD by Chalene. My wife found Chalene to be fairly easy to watch, the moves are all compound…
  • go to good running shoe store, and have them fit you. Before hand, you could take a wet print of the bottom of your foot to see what foot type you are (height of arch). Most, if not all, running shoes these days are so flexible they don't need to be broken in. You may not want to set a PR in them the first time out, but…
  • 1) Have you thought about trying the barefoot/minimalist method? Or at least shorten your stride and land more midfoot. 2) You might want to make an appt with a good podiatrist that understands runners and ask if he/she can do a gait analysis for you. Maybe your form is causing you problems? 3) Do you perform any leg…
  • I certainly have seen them get smaller, but as a guy that's the result I was looking for!!!
  • I agree, the site's protein's numbers are way too low. As with others, I shoot for roughly 75% of my goal weight in grams of protein per day. That works out to about 145g/day. The site gives me about 60. I think health issues from too much protein aren't a factor until you hit more than twice your weight in grams, which is…

  • I had read that since there is so much difference in the way (intensity, sets, weight) people work out, the website couldn't give you an accurate estimate of calories. Some people consider working out to be talk for 5, do a light set. Talk 5, do another light set. Others push hard, going for failure, not making friends and…
  • While it's fun to push a little harder and go faster, you may find that it doesn't do it for you. Many people, including myself, work towards faster times, since you'll burn more calories in the same time. However, you may find that a slow steady job is just a great stress relief, and you don't need more than that out of…
  • I suppose you could be undereating too much, but if you've been using the same formula for months, and it's been working all that time, I don't think that's your problem. I'm no doctor, of course. Could it be that you're measuring meals a little too generously? Have you tried getting back to strict basics and pulling out…
  • I think you should stop eating your exercise calories for a week and then see what happens. As I stated elsewhere, I believe the MFP calorie goal takes into account the calories that exercise will burn (if you put exercise into your profile) and then gives you an 'adjusted' goal.
