You need to go to an athletic shoe store that actually has a staff who know what they are doing. We have one in NH called Runners Alley. They will watch you run and be able to tell if you have a neutral stride or if you pronate. Its critical that you have the correct shoe because if you bought a shoe that is for someone…

Exactly, you nailed it. Weight lifters take up too much space and time in the gym. They only want people who buy a one year membership and only come for one week or only come a few days a week for 30 minutes at a time.

I used to belong to PF years ago before they started their riduculous "Judgement Free Zone" crap. They started this policy so as to force all of the people who actually workout to leave the gym. I found that they are the ones who are judemental. Shortly after they started the policy they got rid of the METREX protein…

You run and run and run some more, but seriously Hal Higdon Half Marathon novice training works great for beginners.

My coldest has been -8 below. I have several runs under zero. You really have to wear a face mask covering your mouth, as you shouldnt breathe the super cold air directly into your lungs. As a result your oxygen intake is greatly reduced so that if feels like your suffocating as you run. I really dont recomend running more…

In the past 3 years I have run 7 full marathons. I am 5-9 and last November I ran the Manchester Marathon at 260 lbs. That was a very heavy weight for me to run a marathon but I did it in 5:36:23. My fastest was in 2008, same marathon at 4:26:24 at 218 lbs. The point is if you enjoy running dont let lack of speed deter…

The answer for me is abstain from alcoholic drinks.

Not to worry, they already said that the products will continue to be manufactured no matter what. They are just restructuring debt, the twinkies will still be available for a long, long, time.

I wish it was that easy, its not. After trying to do just that for the past 10 years with no success I have come to realize that it just does not work for me that way. People who do not have this compulsion do not understand. They always think if you would just apply enough will power you could do it. Well if I could apply…

Also I want to just say that going over your daily calorie goal by 500 calories isnt really much of a cheat. When I cheat it sets up the compulsion and I can go from eating my daily calorie goal of 1580 to 5000 easily.
-
Cheat days are ok I guess unless you are a compulsive food addict type of person. I know if i cheat it sets up the uncontrollable compulsion to keep eating badly. One day quickly turns into multiple days, weeks and months and then afterwards the awful feelings of guilt and remorse. So if you have the ability to cheat for…

I run in the rain, snow, sleet, wind, heat, cold, night, I run in whatever conditions mother nature throws at me. If I only ran in nice weather then I would only be running about twice a week. Who cares who stares at whom, focus on your run and ignore the other people.

Yes. You must get rid of your old friends who secretly like to encourage you to eat. Nobody likes to eat and drink alone and if you go out with these people they will just try and say things like, "Come on, just this once wont kill you". I have had my diet sabataged by so called friends many, many times. Especially if I'm…

I was in the Marine Corps during the 80's and we went to the Phillipines quite frequently. It was a ritual when we went out in town to raise hell that we would always make the new guy eat Balut. So yes I have had it and surprisingly its not bad, the beak is a bit crunchy though.

Just remember, some day there will be 2 kinds of people on earth. Those who own guns and those who work for them.
-
Thats probably realistic for you based on your training. The biggest thing to be careful about in 1/2 marathons to full marathons is to resist the temptation to go too fast too soon. Typically you will feel really good the first few miles, especially if you have well rested legs. This usually fakes people into going harder…

If I was meant to have a tatoo on my body I would have been born with it.

No I dont get a flu shot. I know quite a few people that have had complications from it over the years. It just isnt worth it when they cant even guarantee that it will work since the flu mutates so quickly. Eat right, get lots of rest and excersise should keep your immune system strong enough to handle a bout with the flu.

You can also make yourself some screw shoes: http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm This works great!

I live in New Hampshire which is also cold and snowy and I have run 5 marathons in the past 3 years and 2 of them have been May marathons. I use an 18 week Hal Higdon training schedule that starts off at 25 miles a week in which you run Monday off, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 5, Thursday 3, Friday Off, Saturday 5, Sunday 10. That…

100% agree, I was doing a lot of marathon training the past few years and was having a lot of trouble losing weight until I eliminated products containing High Fructose Corn Syrup. So read your labels and eat clean!

I'm a hunter and I have a freezer full of deer meat. I make an excellent venison chili. Its also nice lean meat.
-
just go for a 3 mile walk to make up the calorie differance.....

Wonder where I can find Kangroo meat in New Hampshire?

Unfortuneatly belly fat is the first on and last off.............................. just keep at it and once your body has burned up the excess fat everywhere else it will start to take it off your belly. The good news is that once you get to that point it starts to come of fast.

After reading all these comments it just reinforces the fact that there IS NO EASIER SOFTER WAY, the shortcuts to weight loss almost always have nasty consequences. I will stick with proper diet and excersise, slow and steady wins the race.

Excellent post. HFCS is a huge problem. In addition to being unbelievably bad for you it is also extremely addictive. This is why food companies love it. Its like the crack cocaine of the food industry.
-
Eliminate eating any foods that have High Fructose Corn Syrup and you will eliminate quite a few cravings. That includes simple little things like Ketchup. http://wakeupfromyourslumber.com/video/aletho-news/sugar-bitter-truth

I didnt take in fewer calories when I stopped eating HFCS, I just ate the same ammount of calories but No HFCS. Its all about how your body metabolises HFCS. The majority of HFCS gets turned into fat.
