  • Yes I think Vodka would count. However chemically a glass of Vodka would contain aproximately 40% alcohol. Therefore you would have to drink 11.2 glasses of Vodka to get the same equivilent of water. You would then have the added complication of the alcohol to deal with such as puking, requiring late night greasy food and…
  • If you run or cycle outdoors go for the Garmin. I jave an FR410. You can easily use it indoors as well all you have to do is switch off the GPS.
  • I think that when they say that they don't advertise it they mean in local newspapers etc, on here is fine. I spoke about this to the run director at my local event and he said it is basically because parkrun is free and run by volunteers if it was advertised on a major scale then you could have a situation where the…
  • I have been a regular parkrunner since June. My weekend is not the same without it. It is a truly a fantastic organisation. I cannot recommend it more highly.
  • When I first started the initial block was aerobic capacity but this improves remarkably quickly. I did not have a problem with leg strength until I started running much longer distances 10K+. The other aspect to running is the mental side. Sometimes it is much easier to stop than it is to carry on but once you get over…
  • I second this. parkrun is an absolutely fantastic organisation. I cannot praise it highly enough. (www.parkrun.org.uk)
  • One thing that is really starting to annoy me in UK about the Olympics is the "I'm not benefiting personally therefore I'm against it" attitude. It is arguably the greatest sproting event on the planet. Lets just enjoy it while it is here.
  • The Olympics is awarded to a city not a country. Hence it is the "London" Olympics. It is not and never has been the British Olympic games. You should not expect to see any benefits living in Northern Ireland. Stuart Pearce did not pick any Northern Irish players because there are not any that meet the qualifying criteria…
  • If they are planning to wheel out Paul McCartny again then I have a feeling that you may be right.
  • That's because it is the "London" Olympics.
  • This but with cigarette smoke.
  • I have recently bought a Garmin due to running. The calorie burn that the Garmin gives is about 20% less than my previous HRM. I don't know how this compares to the Polar though. The garmin used something called the "first beat method" to calculate calorie burn and excercise intensity. I think the Garmin takes into…
  • I agree with this. My 5K time is also just under 25mins. I can do 10K in 54-56mins. I personally can't keep my 5K pace all the way round although I do usually run my normal 5K pace for the first 5K then slow. I carry two small 175ml bottles in a bottle belt but I do not always drink it all until I finish.
  • I have always assumed that the calorie readings on an HRM include your BMR calories so in theory you should deduct your BMR from the final reading. What I do instead is stop the HRM as soon as I finish my excercise. I know that I will still be burning calories at a higher rate for a while after I have stopped due to the…
  • So where is everyone running tomorrow then? My home event is cancelled so I will either do Brighton & Hove, Eastleigh, Southampton or Netley Abbey. I have not decided yet. I would be interested if anyone has done one of these.
  • The best thing about an HRM is that at some point you will have to tighten the chest strap.
  • How can you calculate body fat percentage based on sex, age, height and weight. Complete rubbish! The BBC should know better.
  • Well done everyone who went out in the rain today. I finished in 25:53. Which is only 2s slower than my best for the course. I was quite pleased as it was wet, muddy and very slippery in places. Our run is not on next week so I am thinking of trying another. Perhaps Brighton & Hove.
  • Just checked out the Albert Park course. If you have to run in the rain this looks like a good one for it. Flat and run on tarmac. Don't worry though it is always sunny at 9am on Saturday mornings :-) Parkrun is addictive I garantee that if you do one you will be back every week. It is a really good atmoshpere and everyone…
  • Thanks for explaining that. I'm new to strength training. I was sure my guns had got bigger!
  • If you cannot build muscle whilst in a calorie defecit then how come I can lift weights today that I could not lift two months ago? I must have some very strong fat.
  • I will look out for the man in the tiger costume then! Havant Parkrun is not on in two weeks time (14th July). Staunton Park is hosting the Hampshire Water Festival or something. So you can enjoy your hang over in peace.
  • I bought one of these from Lidl and it was quite good for a while. Then it started losing its settings and then died completely. I changed the battery but this was not the problem. I have just purchased a Garmin Forerunner. It is not really fair to compare the two since the Garmin cost ten times more than the Lidl one and…
  • A new Parkrun started near me three weeks ago (Havant). I have taken part in all three and I can fully recommend them. The organisation is fantastic and the results system and stats that you can get online are really useful. The times at my local event range from about 16mins to 45mins so there is a wide range of abilities…
  • 10,000 steps for five miles sound plausable. If your circle is 50 steps and you walk it 4 times that is a total of 200 steps. One mile would be 2,000 steps so you would need to walk the circle 40 times to make one mile. 4 times round would be on tenth of a mile.
  • Your post count is almost as big as your ego. I feel "honoured" to have the oportunity to reply to a post started by you.
  • Sounds like something that can only be really sorted out by an appearance on the Jeremy Kyle show.
  • I think "afterburn" a fantastic word for calories burned after stopping a workout!
  • I see. Mine gives me a calorie burn the whole time I am wearing it even if I am sitting idle. So I assume that in my case some of the calorie burn shown would have been burnt anyway without excercise. I think about 100 calories in an hour long session would have been burnt not excersising so for the purposes of MFP should…
  • I stop taking readings as soon as I finish my workout. But I do not deduct my BMR calories from the calories shown on the HRM. I figure that the afterburn probably cancels out the BMR.
