It depends how much weight you want to lose. TDEE-20% is a good goal for most people. If you have a lot to lose, you can take a bigger cut out of TDEE and if you have a little (10lbs or less) you may need to eat closer to your TDEE.

Are you the "do dogs have brains" girl? I love your work.

Evolution doesn't work that way.

No. A 24 year old 165 lb man is eating 900-1200 cals a day and you're telling him to eat less? OP, you're not eating enough. The weight gain could have been glycogen, water, muscle swelling, time of day -- it does not mean you're eating too much, because that's not possible. Are you still trying to lose weight? If not,…

Bump to follow :)

On a slightly related and interesting tangent, lower body fat in women is actually supposed to be good for you, so don't try to lose it all (in my case that seems to be impossible). It is cardioprotective, associated with better lipid profiles and lower risk of diabetes.…

Whew, glad you just got a shot in the arm and were not shot in the arm! That would get pretty sore! I don't get flu shots but I have heard people say this year that they were more sore than usual and even had flu like symptoms. If the shot is into the muscle of the arm (I assume it is) I would probably rest it for a few…

Thanks for your post. I lol'ed when you said people stopped coming to your pity parties. You are very strong. It makes me wonder if I could be the same if something like that happened to me. It could happen to anyone, illness, an accident, cancer. I like to think so but I think we don't know until we are tested.

I really just love how my whole body pretty much works perfectly.

Maybe something like a low carb pizza would be good -- there are a lot of recipes if you google it, and there is always the "cauliflower crust" pizza. You also get a lot of hits if you google "low carb recipes for kids". That's cool that the family lets you cook once a week! You always hear about the diet in France being…

If they are used to eating a certain way and you offer something completely different and possibly less palatable, they may resist it or dislike it (depending on the age and personality of the kids and their relationship with you). Why are you trying to go low carb with them? My suggestion would be to modify something they…

The amazing thing to me is that we know any of this stuff at all. How did we figure it out? I also liked the part about how we would have to carry around 38 lbs of carbs to equal the energy of 10 lbs of fat. Kind of makes you appreciate fat!
-
You pretty much nailed it! Lipid is released from adipocytes (fat cells; basically just cells that store lipid) when the body needs energy that is not provided by easily metabolized energy from the diet (ie calories). The lipid is broken down into smaller units that provide energy for other cells. Fat cells never go away,…

It did seem a bit over the top.

 That was like the 2nd thing she said. She did eventually postulate that they might have a brain so I think she came around at the end.

Not all buried threads are dead, some are just sleeping . . . muah ha ha

Thank you, I thought I was opening someone up for a really funny joke here! I might have said "sounds good, as long as you aren't eating celery after 6pm"...

It's a funny American spelling, in the sense that Americans don't know how to spell... Obviously they don't know how to quote properly either . . . :)

You hate Neil Patrick Harris? Wow. You should watch Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. It's streaming on Netflix. It will change your mind.
-
Yeah, she was really good at playing annoying -- almost like it came naturally to her.

I hate every character on breaking bad. Every character. Had to stop watching it. Poor Dawn. She was the annoying little sister (sort of). You were supposed to find her annoying.

Agree with the above. It's not that unreasonable. If he had said he lost it all by eating nothing but celery, cayenne pepper and beef jerky, I might have said something.

LOL, I prefer the penis comments personally. Guess they didn't have the metrics to include that, but it is published elsewhere. http://www.targetmap.com/viewer.aspx?reportId=3073

That's fine, but BMI is the best measure of "overweightness" we have on a population level. When you're talking about an individual person, I agree that body composition, where fat is stored, waist to height ratio, etc. is much more important than BMI. The story that sparked this discussion was on a population level. I'm…
-
The funny thing is I don't think anyone is arguing here. No one claims BMI has "diagnostic" value. You seem to be claiming that it has no value.
-
I'm getting the sense that you actually have reasons for the things you say but when you just state arguable claims without any supporting facts it's hard to know what to do with it. BMI may have been developed in 1850 but that doesn't mean the disease correlates have not been updated since that time.
-
Totally agree, I don't think anyone would argue the claim that it can't be used alone in evaluating the health or disease risk of a specific individual. That doesn't mean it isn't useful as a public health (vs medical) metric. My understanding is that it developed as a public health population-level measure of disease risk…

As ET said above the "index" is mass vs height. Are you saying you don't think the health associations apply? Based on what?

I do body weight strength training for the most part so someone else can advise you better on weight lifting programs, but here are my favorite resources -- the first is more general but very good info and I used it to get started when I was doing some dumbbell stuff, and the others are body weight related.…
