Very helpful, thank you! Doesn't this assume no significant loss of LBM while dieting?

What happened to the other thread you started about this? Or am I in an alternate reality?

Good questions, don't know. The fact that transplantation of obese human intestinal flora into a mouse can induce obesity goes a little way to addressing Koch's postulates and establishing some causation, but I think a lot is still unknown. The relationship between IBS and gut flora is really interesting, especially in…

I think most of the studies are still in animal models, but from what I understand, it has been shown that the efficiency of gut bacteria is variable and can affect nutrient and calorie absorption of the host -- this is among the many other things that gut bacteria affect (including the immune system and many cognitive…

Another interesting and little-discussed component is the likely effect of gut flora on obesity, which could affect everything from hunger signals to breakdown of food (thus determining how many calories you actually get from what you ingest). This is a hot topic and there is a lot of literature on this out there. Calories…

Everyone is playing with semantics. If we accept this interpretation of "a calorie is a calorie" proposed by the authors -- "weight change in hypocaloric diets is independent of macronutrient composition", would anyone actually agree with this?

http://www.paleoforwomen.com/shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/ Yes, I posted this in the other thread too...feel free to ignore the paleo part. This is the best review of sex-specific responses to fasting I have seen. I think men and women are…

Shouldn't this be in chit chat?

Soy products (tempeh is best if you are worried about phytoestrogens, which some people are - I think the jury is still out on that one), seitan, beans, quinoa, Greek yogurt, eggs, and nutritional yeast are all great sources. I also use a protein shake on occasion for convenience. You can also use protein powder to make…

There is a 5:2 group that might be helpful: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/8005-5-2-fasting

I like that. Can we reiterate what the core beliefs are? That animals should not be used as a commodity? Or something more specific? I know there are some that would take it further (for instance, not believing animals should be "owned"), but what would you consider the core beliefs?

This is my new years resolution! One RAoC per day.

Let's see, 2, 5, 6 and 7 for me -- how many of these are we allowed to have?

Abdominal muscle is skeletal muscle.

I second/third the recommendation for checking her iron. That said, cravings don't necessarily mean she has a deficiency (unless I am deficient in chocolate cake).

Thanks. No one ever remarks on that, I thought it was pretty funny.

I think people are responding more to the subtext of the OP's question, in that he seemed to be asking about a pharmaceutical approach to losing fat. I agree with you that people should be careful about dismissing any potential ability of supplements to affect the metabolic rate. Regarding the study above, I can't access…

No,"abs are made in the kitchen" just means to eat at a deficit so fat loss will reveal the abdominal muscles everyone has. Not sure where people get the impression it means you have to eat any certain way.

 So you dash across the room inexplicably for no reason, stand in the doorway for several minutes, and then take a nap on the newspaper? I like that workout too.

I think rough play between dogs is fine unless the submissive dog appears distressed. Gnawing on your hand is not OK, even if there are no teeth involved. Dogs should be inhibited against any sort of biting behavior towards humans as it can too easily escalate. As for the dominance/reinforcement debate, there are a lot of…

I think you are right that "by default" they tend to be higher carb but that doesn't mean that with a little customization you can't have a low carb vegan diet. I can easily keep my carbs under 150g by eating a variety of veggies (even including potatoes and other starchy veggies), bean or bean-based things like hummus,…
-
I'm pretty much vegan, and for protein I use soy products (especially tempeh), beans, nutritional yeast (10g protein per tablsepoon or something like that) and protein powder. Nuts have protein without many carbs, but of course they have fat too (not that that's a bad thing). How low are you trying to keep your carbs?

Ha ha, sorry. I decided the OP wasn't trolling. But for you:
-
I think what the OP is missing is that it's not physiologically relevant whether she is eating 0.5333 cups or 0.49777 cups of ice cream. Calories in cannot be determined that accurately, and calories out cannot be determined anywhere near that accurately. Whether you tamp it down into the cup or not is well within the…

Yes, just scoop it frozen. There are 2 cups total in the container and there are 4 servings, so each serving is 0.5 cups which is the equivalent of 118 ml. If ml is a confusing unit of measure, just convert it into cups.
-
The ice cream serving (like a serving of fluids) is given in ml, which is a measure of volume. You can convert ml to cups using the google. 118 ml = 0.5 cups. Do you have measuring cups?
