Aw, thanks! I'll check it out. Merry Christmas!

Great comment. I think it is important to find a balance between where our brain wants to be, our body wants to be, and the amount of time and energy it takes to be there. I also feel I could maintain at a lower weight but the amount of effort required is exponentially increased. At the same time, it doesn't mean a…

Why do you say that? This is an interesting article looking at some of the differences in the male and female response to fasting. http://www.paleoforwomen.com/shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/

I concur. However, in people's defense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe's_law Sometimes it's hard to tell satire from the sincere ridiculousness that we are all so used to seeing online.

Have you tried snowshoeing? (outside, not on the treadmill :)

Because the deficit is already built into your goal before exercise. So unless your goal is set improperly, the MFP calorie goal is your net goal. Having a higher deficit is not necessarily better. As for using exercise to aid in reaching a properly set goal, then yes, exercise gives you the option of eating more than you…

I think it is a combination of lovely, invasive and awkward.

Actually in this case it's pretty obvious it's a joke without even knowing the source... But what makes the onion funny is that it's not really that much of a stretch. http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/30/iranian-news-agency-claims-onion-report-it-ran-by-mistake-is-essentially-true/

It's ok, unless you have some specific goal (like low carb). Protein and fat macros are best thought of as minimums. MFP default macro settings are kind of arbitrary anyway. If you are following a specific plan that has you trying to hit certain macros, or if you find you feel better on a certain combination of macros,…

So, the way the website is set up is that MFP gives you a calorie goal based on your height, weight, age, daily activity level (not counting exercise) and how fast you tell it you want to lose weight (the faster you say you want to lose, the lower your goal). So the calorie goal includes your daily deficit up front. Then…

I vote no. Insufficient drama and only very mild uproar. OP can do better/worse.

? Are you OK?

This post is a good guide to calories and macros -- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819055-setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets Usually what is recommended is a minimum of 1g protein per lb of lean body mass (so you need to measure or estimate your body fat percentage if possible) and a minimum 0.35g fat per lb…

It's easier for guys due to testosterone, but human beings have been building muscle for thousands of years without tracking macros. Eat enough, eat enough protein, and lift progressively heavier things. Just make sure you have realistic expectations (you can't build muscle without gaining weight) and it would be good to…

The HBO documentary clip the OP links to in this thread is worth a watch. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1115397-understanding-why-it-s-so-difficult-to-maintain-weight?hl=HBO+documentary+

Edema can feel soft or firm depending on how much fluid is in the tissues. Water is denser than fat (fat floats in water), so a given volume of water would be heavier than a given volume of fat. If water were actually filling the fat cells in the place of lipid (which I think is still up for debate), whether it would feel…

I'll read the biopsies! I know when you have atrophy of fat due to starvation, the adipose tissue becomes edematous, but I have never seen that microscopically except in the late stages of fat depletion/emaciation.
-
I agree. I would also add that, since people report that the adipose tissue itself feels squishy/edematous and do not report dependent edema, it may be a localized process within the adipose interstitium, perhaps having to do with vasodilation or increased vascular permeability, rather than a systemic protein oncotic…

Not much to add, but BP seems to be a bit inconsistent in the way he talks about this topic. Edema refers to excess fluid in the extracellular, extravascular space -- so the peripheral edema of dieters of the MSS is truly edema but the proported filling of adipocytes with fluid would not qualify as edema. If people losing…

Bump for later. I wonder how easy this is to measure.

You don't have to exercise. Just figure out how much you burn in a day and eat less than that. Or not. It's your choice - sometimes weight loss is not a priority and that's fine too.

Great story! Sounds like you have come a very long way in a short time. Just think what more you will be capable of in the years to come! I love Tasmania! I spent 6 months in Melbourne in college and spent 10 days hiking across Tasmania, one of my favorite memories of my trip. You're so lucky to live there! Best of luck…

Interesting discussion. Not sure why all the hate for ungeneric. Seems like everyone is saying pretty much the same thing. As for fat calories not counting as much as carb calories, well, if you believe this 5000 cal guy has discovered some magical previously unknown properties of food, give it a try yourself. That's what…

Agree. Eating anything less than TDEE will result in weight loss (just remember it is an estimate though, and intake is somewhat of an estimate too even with careful logging). The question is how much below it should you go. To lose 1 lb a week, you need a 500 cal daily deficit - 0.5lbs a week would be a 250 cal daily…

Swimming is great exercise (and fun) but you won't lose weight unless you eat at a calorie deficit. Cardio can actually be counterproductive if you rely on it to create a deficit, since it tends to increase appetite. Enjoy your swim as a great cardiovascular workout, but watch your calories too.

I think it depends on your goals, current fitness/strength level, and what size dumbells you have. You could do a more endurance-based workout with lighter weights (a lot of the exercise videos are like this I think), or you could use weights that are heavy (for you) and do a strength-based workout. You could probably…

I agree to agree. :flowerforyou: It's like a hare krishna rally in here.
