I measure "loose" stuff like nuts and dried fruit. Otherwise, I'd eat lots of 'em with wild abandon. I can eyeball the big ticket items like fish and chicken pretty well. Also, I like brightly colored kitchen gadgets made by Kuhn Rikon. OXO makes a handy measurer/scooper for loose stuff that combines measuring tbsp., up to…

This. And Doctors, even the best of them, are not well versed in nuitrition and diet.

Ice it, raise and rest it. I am not an expert but based upon my prior experience with sports injuries (I had my left knee scoped several years ago) it sounds like you may have sprained it or have a small tear. Don't go to long without seeing an orthopedist. Take care.

Everyone has pretty much hit the nail on the head. Change is difficult, when you are young the prospect of having long term health issues related to weight as you get older just doesn't click; having unrealistic goals that negate a lifestyle change versus a quick fix, etc. Staying motivated is not easy, particularly if an…

I don't think it is "acceptable' to be large in the US, even if a large (no pun intended) segment of the population across are clinically overweight or obese. It seems as if we in the US obsess about "dieting," judging by the number of pop culture magazines admonishing us to tone, trim, look thinner, look younger, etc.

This! Also, if your dog is pulling on its leash either get some self help training or a couple of sessions with a dog trainer. Many breeds are quite willful -- bully and terrier breeds in particular -- it is part of their "charm.' I don't run with my pitbull but I do walk briskly. Bonnie walks briskly AT MY SIDE where she…

"Wings of Desire" Like many German films, fantastically weird. Two angels and the late great Peter Falk fly over Berlin listening in on Berliners' thoughts.

I have arthritis in my lower spine and knees from sports injuries. Hatha yoga is an excellent start, particularly if you haven't exercised in awhile. Oftentimes, yoga classes are offered to folks with arthritic conditions so check in your area. You've already started walking -- I suggest adding a few more minutes/steps…

I agree. The "costs less to eat healthy" thread(s) periodically resurface like a bad fortune on the eight ball. Some folks must be shopping healthy on Planet 9.

If you are concerned about the sugar content in fruit, then eat fruit with a lower glycemic index, and increase the amount of vegetables.

"At 64 years old, an age when most people let themselves go. . . " Oh . .. really? So let's move on from this too!!

Get the his and hers copy of "Younger Next Year." And then see what he says. This is about you (and him) going into the best years of your lives. He can either join you or get out of your way. I'm going to be 60 in Sept and my husband is 66. We hit the gym 4-5xs weekly and enjoy biking and swimming. You go girl!

Aside from the sodium, most of the prepackaged meals are overly processed. Good homecooking is Queen (or King)!

This. I am a short woman with big upper arms and upper back, and disproportionally broad shoulders. I have been lifting weights (mostly compound movements as oppose to site specific lifts) for about 3 months 2-3x weekly. I'm by no means chiseled or ripped, but I like my strong arms and wearing a t-shirt. Well, a shake…

My Mom died before the end of last year, just a couple of weeks shy of her 98th birthday. She died in her home with her kitties and family at her side. She was active (walking, gardening) until about 5-6 months before she died. She was a petite slender woman all of her life. She grew up on a farm, and she and her siblings…

Pretty much. I grew up during the 60's and their were barely a handful of us throughout the school system that were fat as compared to kids today. I remember kids chanting, "Fatty, Fatty two by four, can't fit through the bathroom door, so she does it on the floor, fatty fatty two by four!" Or "Fat and skinny had a race up…

I'm Jean and I'm 59. I grew up in the 60's and 70's. I filed a discrimination complaint with the Dept of Justice in 1971 under Title 9 of the 1964 Civil Rights Act against the coed college I was attending at that time. Although a private liberal arts college, it accepted some federal funding for a couple of its programs,…

Yes, I think in the sense that she wrote about "dieting" as a means to conform to societal standards of beauty. Traditionally dieting for women hasn't been about fitness and health. It's been about fitting into a prom dress, getting ready for the beach, fitting into a wedding dress (now tube feeding!!). It still is. Look…

I'm 59. I've lost 9 lbs towards my goal to loose 35. I lift weights, and do some cardio. I've lost lots of inches (gone down two trouser sizes) and body fat. I consume between 1300-1500 calories daily (I'm 4'11"). Read, "Younger Next Year" and "New Rules for Lifting for Women." Calculate your TDEE and cut 15% or 20%. Those…

You can use your own body weight for alot of workouts and get the benefit of both strength training and cardio. You can purchase a medicine ball, resistance straps, and a kettleball at Walmart or even TJ Maxx. I work out this way in my gym; unfortunately I can't suggest a web site or You Tube video that depicts workout…

You should banish trigger foods and drinks from your home until you are ready to deal with them. I had the same issue with certain foods a few years back and that is what a nutritionist recommended. I went cold turkey, no substitutes. I can have the same foods around now and even eat t hem in moderation without any issues.…

Not sure why you are even bringing this up, or what it has to do with stay at home Moms. Wear a HRM and you will find out for yourself the caloric value of house cleaning if you are so concerned about what other people are doing.

odd duck here -- No anger or ragewhile lifting weights or cardio. I am naturally very willfull and determined; and giving myself challenges and goals to meet. I experience a kind of a positive euphoria during and afterwards.

There are a number of calculators out there to help you. Check out www.fitnessfrog.com and fattofitradio. Determine what your body fat % is to lean mass, and stay focused on fitness. I'm not sure from what you posted what your CW or BF% is and what your goal(s) are. My husband is 66yrs old, stands 5'8", and weighs 144, and…

Mine for today: 1. Added new exercises to my routine at the gym 2. My husband commented that my upper arms were noticibly firmer 3. I found "Grab the Good," focusing on the positive. Thank you!

I prefer Trader Joe's to Whole Foods, which is pricier where i live. I also bought fish at a Whole Foods several years ago that was saturated with formaldyhyde, a preservative. I never bought fish from them again. I also shop at Earthfare, which is similar to Whole Foods. You can buy certain products in bulk like nuts, and…

The more you beat yourself down the harder it is to pick yourself up. All the posts above are positive affirmations that it is not unusual to have one plus of those days. If you are concerned about this behavior, ban those types of food from your home, fair or unfair to your kids. They'll survive. You are a success story.…

Thanks so much for your positive feedback. I see by your profile you are military -- so is my husband, a Vietnam combat (recon) vet. And thanks for your service to our country.
