The other day I spent 15 minutes on the treadmill (which I strongly dislike) because I was too nervous to venture over to the free weight section. There were a few women lifting and doing machines, but the majority of people there were men. What if I look stupid? What if they stare? Then I saw that there was a squat rack…

I'm excited that I can actually add some numbers to this thread. I decided to join a gym and I just started lifting with the barbell this week. Here are my numbers for StrongLifts 5x5 so far: Squats: 55lbs 5x5, 95lbs 1 rep max Overhead Press: 45lbs 5x5 Deadlifts: 65lbs 5x5, 130lbs 1 rep max Rows: 55lbs 5x5 Bench Press:…

That's what I was trying to explain to him, but I was not able to do this in an efficient way. Thank you for the short and sweet explanation.

I love these pictures! Threads like this one make me so anxious to get a gym membership. I can't afford it right now because I'm saving money for an International Teaching Placement, but when I get back I think that will be my first purchase. I've been using dumbbells at home, but squats and dead-lifts are starting to get…

I love avocados too and I only started eating them in this past year. I use it as a spread on wraps and sandwiches and mix it with meat to make it more flavourful. It has such a great taste and consistency.

I'm not married but my boyfriend and I had a talk like this last year. We were having a lot of relationship problems and were finally talking through everything. Part of the reason we were having problems was that we had formed lazy habits. He would spend his nights playing video games, while I hung around on my computer.…

Have you tried classes? I'm not a huge fan of the gym either, unless I'm doing a Zumba or spin class and then I can't wait to go. I've also done exercise videos at home, which can be fun too depending on the kind of video you get. Other options could be trying a new sport or signing up for dance classes or something like…

Definitely orthotics. I have a set for every pair of shoes I own (even soccer cleats and hockey skates). I don't think I'd be able to be so active without them. You should really look into getting a pair.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I'm still undecided, but these are all great ideas and I'm sure I'll end up using one of them!

I like seeing the number on the scale go down, but I know losing inches means more than losing weight. I gained 3lbs this week, but still managed to lose 0.5 inches from each of my thighs. I gained, yet my body still shrank. I've decided to stay away from the scale for a while and focus more on the measurements.

I'm "only a girlfriend" too. haha. My boyfriend's in the army. He's been in for 5 years, we've been together for 2.5.

I'm 5'5", 21 years old. I started at 142, CW is 139 and my GW is 130.

I never know how to log this either. Usually I only log the approximate amount of time I was on the ice for. I'm probably underestimating what I actually burned, but I figure that I'd rather do that than overestimate. I hope you get some more answers for this though, because I'm curious too.

I started at 1400 calories and lost 2 pounds in 3 weeks. But last week, I only lost 0.4lbs and not a single inch on my body. This week I upped my calories to 1600.I was a little apprehensive at first and I honestly thought I would gain this week because an extra 200 calories a day seemed like a lot. But today I was 0.8lbs…

I'm proud of myself today for stepping on the scale and seeing that I lost 0.8lbs since last Friday, putting me into the 130s. I'm also proud that I was able to resist trying a sample at ALL the Costco food sample stations, and instead only chose the one I really wanted. :P

I agree with this. I'm 5'5" 140lbs (want to get down to 130) and was eating 1400 a day. I upped my calories to 1600 just this past week and I lost double the weight that I did last week. It felt really weird to do because I felt like I was eating way more than I normally would, but so far its working for me. Try it out and…

I'm a 4th year university student studying to be a teacher. I actually find it easier to manage my eating when I'm at school. This is mainly because I live at home and commute to my school so I have to plan and pack most of my meals. Plus, with my lack of money, I can't justify spending money on the overpriced food they…

Sometimes late at night, when everyone's asleep I get myself a bowl of vanilla frozen yogurt and put any kind of chocolate I can find on it. Chocolate chips, chocolate sauce, doesn't matter. Once I added some marshmallows and graham cracker crumbs to it for a "s'more sundae". I still do this occasionally actually. So…

I saw the name of this thread and thought it described me perfectly. I'm 21, I have 10 lbs to go, but I'm mainly looking to tone up and hope the extra weight falls off from there. Feel free to add me. :)

My boyfriend is away for the next two weeks, but he told me I would be receiving a surprise when I get home from school tomorrow. I'm excited for that! We'll officially celebrate when he gets home, probably with dinner and a movie.

I asked a question like this yesterday and most people told me to up my calories. I also want to lose 10lbs. If your goal is 1 lb per week, change it to 0.5 lb per week so you're getting more calories but still at enough of a deficit to lose. That's what I was told, so that's what I'm trying. Good luck!

I just started lifting at home with dumbbells. I have the ones with removable plates so I can adjust them according to the weight I can lift for each exercise. I also use a program on bodybuilding.com. They have lots that you can tailor to fit your needs. This will work for me right now. When the dumbbells get too easy,…
I gained weight, but got smaller. Yay for strength training!
Exactly. As much as I want to lose weight, if I'm still 140lbs, but am toned and strong with a lower BF%, I'll be satisfied. I decided to up my calorie intake by 200, bringing me to 1600 and a projected weight loss of 0.6lbs per week. We'll see…

I've been looking for a thread like this! lol I'm 5'5" CW is 140 and my GW is 130, though I really just want my body fat percentage to go down. If I'm toned and strong and still 140, that's fine too. As long as I like what I see in the mirror, it's all good!

I understand where you're coming from. I started counting calories last year (not on this website, but on an app I found on my phone) and after two months I decided it was too tedious and stopped. I gained back half of the weight I lost when I was counting. It takes a little while to get used to, but there are shortcuts…

I've been looking at this too and I agree, it does look great. Being able to select workouts based on the resources I have at home really helps. I usually do workouts with weights (done plenty of Jillian Michaels workouts and did 2 months of P90x last year), so I'm not entirely new to strength training. But I guess I'm…

Thanks for all your input! I'll definitely look into your suggestions.
